Kate Hudson: I Love Pregnancy but It Can Be Brutal

Kate Hudson: I Love Pregnancy but It Can Be Brutal

While other celebrities brag about how their bodies bounced back from pregnancy, Kate Hudson admits that it wasn't so easy for her. Hudson, now pregnant with her second child, tells Marie Claire that she struggled to deal with her 70-pound weight gain the first time around.

"It's an emotional roller coaster, having to lose weight," says Hudson, who dropped the pounds by doing three hours of grueling cardio for three months after her first child was born.

Hudson announced in April that she's engaged to her "amazing" baby's father, Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy. (She had her first son Ryder, 7, with ex-husband Chris Robinson of the band The Black Crowes.)

"I gained so much -- I was 185 pounds at the end," she admits. "You actually experience how much energy is stored in that and how much emotion you actually hold in that mass. It is emotional, no matter how determined you are. It takes work to bounce back so quickly."

Hudson is much more conscious of her eating habits during her second pregnancy; her cravings are for healthier food, and she'd gained just eleven pounds when she did the interview (Hudson was six months pregnant at the time). Nevertheless, she says that each pregnancy has its own challenges -- and her first trimester this time around was "brutal."

"I was so sick the first trimester that every time I tried to read, I couldn't concentrate," says Hudson. "So I started brainlessly watching TV in the fetal position on my couch. It was brutal. I only just started getting a bigger appetite."

Hudson's Something Borrowed costar, Ginnifer Goodwin -- who was interviewed along with Hudson for the Marie Claire story -- has had her own struggles with weight loss. In January, Goodwin revealed to Health magazine that she has been a member of Weight Watchers for 23 years.

"Most of the people I know are on the program for health reasons," Goodwin says. "And yes, some of them are slim women who want to stay slim." She also admits that if she didn't live in Hollywood, she wouldn't be as svelte as she is: "I am genetically predisposed to be a bigger girl than I am. I have very real hips and a Southern woman's ass."

Goodwin -- who says "I've never had body issues, and I've never had an eating disorder" -- admits that she only weighs 10 pounds more than she did when she was 9 years old.

As far as her baby plans go, Goodwin -- who recently got engaged to actor Joey Kern -- says she can't wait to follow in Hudson's famous-mama footsteps. "I'm so ready. I want a life full of little Joeys," she says. "I'm only holding off until after my wedding for vanity purposes. I just want to be able to fit into whatever dress I pick out."
