'Newsbabes' host pink party for breast cancer awareness | Nikki ...

The third annual Newsbabes Bash for breast cancer was filled with pink. Pink dresses, pink cocktails and pink Georgetown cupcakes.

"This is either a Newsbabes event of a sample sale for Tory Burch," remarked ambassador Nancy Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as she glanced around the room.

But no quota of springy pink cocktail attire and pale pink ties could quash the seriousness of what the speakers gathered there wanted to talk about. Tuesday night's charity fundraiser at the Fairmont Hotel was a place for ?women to share their personal stories about breast cancer.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius remembered losing a relative to the disease at a young age. "My first encounter with breast cancer was when I was 11 and my 33-year-old aunt died leaving behind my five cousins," she said. "That was my first experience with death and my first knowledge that there was breast cancer and at that point as Nancy [Brinker] knows well, it was a death sentence."

Fox News Channel's Jennifer Griffin and DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., discussed their own battles with the disease. Schultz said it was her job as a Congresswoman and a surrogate for President Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign that got her through seven surgeries. "I emerged cancer free and was able to tell my children what I'd been through, and tell them that mommy was going to be around to torture them for a very long time," Schultz said.

The fundraiser was hosted by the Newsbabes, a group of local media personalities including Anita Brikman, Pamela Brown, Rebecca Cooper, Lindsay Czarniak, Laura Evans, Lesli Foster, Angie Goff, Hillary Howard, Brianna Keilar, Sue Palka, Andrea Roane, Cynne? Simpson, Alison Starling, Shawn Yancy and Eun Yang and news dude Bob Madigan of WTOP. D.C.'s first daughter Jonice Gray Tucker also spoke briefly. We spied CNN's Ed Henry and "D.C. Cupcakes" stars Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis in the crowd.
