WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is awarding the military's highest honor to a Marine credited with saving 36 lives during an intense fire-fight in Afghanistan.
Obama bestowed the Medal of Honor on 23-year-old Dakota Meyer during a White House ceremony. Meyer saved the lives of three dozen U.S. and Afghan comrades during an hours-long battle with the Taliban in 2009.
Meyer personally killed at least eight insurgents despite taking shrapnel to his arm. He is the third living recipient, and the first Marine, to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.
On the eve of Thursday's ceremony, Obama and Meyer met privately and had a beer on a patio near the Rose Garden.
