Fotes' $50 Bankroll Challenge Part 1 | Daily Fantasy Sports

daily fantasy bankroll challengeAs a former hardcore poker player I have had the pleasure of taking notice of guys running bankroll challenges in the past. Perhaps the most famous bankroll challenge ever was the one attempted (and succeeded) by Chris ?Jesus? Ferguson wherein he turned $0 into $10,000. He started with freerolls, and then worked his way up using a very strict set of bankroll rules that he lived by religiously. I decided that with only a little over a month remaining for this major league baseball season I would launch my own bankroll challenge. Why? Well I really don?t know ?why? but I think that several good things are going to come of this. For starters I believe that it is going to open the minds of those who are looking to jump into daily fantasy for the first time, second is really just the fact that its a personal journey for me as bankroll management has ALWAYS been my downfall in the past, and lastly I hope (this is a big hope) that it will serve as a testament to the fact that you can be profitable in playing daily fantasy baseball.

I will be starting this challenge with a $50 bankroll on the date of August 10, 2011 and I will end this challenge September 10, 2011 (or whenever I lose all of the money). The goal will be to have an ending bankroll of $1,000.

The rules for the challenge are as follows:

  1. I cannot use more than 20% of my bankroll on a given day
  2. I cannot play anything other than heads up contests until my bankroll reaches $200
  3. I can never play in a 10+ man tournament (heads up and 5 man only)
  4. I must try to spread out my buy ins amongst several different opponents rather than just one big tournament*
  5. I must play everyday
  6. I cannot redeposit, this is an all or nothing challenge
  7. I must track my progress on DailyFantasyTracker.com

You?ll notice the one asterisk next to number 4 and that is because of the fact that if I am able to find a weaker opponent even if it is not at a $5 game I will take him on, rather than spreading it around via $5 games.

Strategy
A few days ago I wrote about how you are supposed to pick teams differently depending on the type of contest that you are playing. If you haven?t read that post the basic premise is that for heads up you want to pick teams that have less upside, but rarely have the ability of bombing. Whereas if you are playing in a big tournament you want a team that can score 60+ but realistically on most days they are going to score less than 20. I will be using this strategy every single day, and the basic premise of all of my lineups will be hitting streaks + batting average against opposing pitcher for hitters. And for pitchers I am going to be looking for guys who I believe have the best chance of securing the win, strike outs will not factor into my decision.

Today?s Lineup
Every single day approximately an hour before the games are set to start (and after I have signed up for my contests) I will be posting my lineup for all to view. Today?s lineup is as follows:

P ? Derek Holland, $5,800
Derek is a solid pitcher on a solid team that is a -220 favorite tonight against the paltry Seattle Mariners offense. I look for him to go 7ip?s with the win

C ? Mike Napoli, $3,700
When you?re talking about one of the highest scoring teams in baseball its easy to pick players from that team. Truthfully Napoli became my catcher after I had picked everyone else because I had the money left over. But he is doing well over these last few games and has a solid .400 average against Vargas tonight.

1b ? Miguel Cabrera, $3,700
Cabrera is on a 7 game hitting streak (6 of which were multi hit games) and is hitting .400 against Ubaldo Jiminez tonight which makes him an easy pickup.

2b ? Dan Uggla, $3,600
Uggla is on a 30 game hitting streak, and while it has to end sometime lets just hope that it isn?t tonight

3b ? Michael Young, $3,700
Young is on a 9 game hitting streak and is hitting .429 against Vargas this evening. Couple that with the Rangers? propensity for scoring runs and he becomes an easy pick.

SS ? Edgar Renteria, $3,000
Renteria is on a 4 game hititng streak and is hitting .326 against Millwood tonight. For his price tag you really can?t go wrong.

LF ? Jason Bay, $3,300
Bay is on a 10+ game hitting streak and is hitting .370 against Harrang this evening.

CF ? Michael Bourn, $3,600
Bourn seems to be settling in with his new team very nicely, currently on a 4 game hitting streak and hitting .300 against tonights opposing pitcher, Sanchez.

RF ? Jeff Francoeur, $3,500
Francoeur is on a 5 game hitting streak and hitting .667 against Davis. Be advised that the .667 is only for 3 at bats so I do not put much stock into that number as I do for other guys who have at least 10 at bats against a specific pitcher.

So there you have tonights lineup, and as for tonights games I will be playing one $10 heads up match against a player who I took off of the lobby. The link to the game is:

Here Note that you must be a FanDuel member before you can view it.

Current Bankroll
$40 with $10 at stake

I will be back tomorrow to both recap tonights action and to post tomorrows lineup.

If you are interested in having your own bankroll challenge and would like to document it on this website please contact us and let us know. Additionally for those of you that are not currently signed up for FanDuel go ahead and Click Here to make it happen.
