Laminate floors refer to particular flooring products made of several layers that are fused together while involving lamination process. Wood with a photographic appliqu?, melamine resin and fiber boards are used to make laminate floorings. Generally, these floors are composed of four layers: the ?bottom layer? is a base which provides balance and stability to rest of the layers; ?core layer?, composed of fiber boards, is the central and most important layer that actually provides durability to the flooring; ?wear layer? is made of paper, film, plastic or metal foil and it is a protective layer which protects what is underneath it; and the final layer is known as ?decorative layer? which gives appearance and stylish look to the floor.
There are several types of laminate floors with respect to lamination processing and surface patterns.
Laminating process is categorized into two types: direct pressure laminate flooring (DPL) and high pressure laminate flooring (HPL). In the DPL, all four layers are collectively fused together under 300 pounds per square inch of pressure at 300 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This process takes less effort and time; therefore, the chances of its turning out of shape are higher. The HPL is a two-step process in which bottom and core layers are fused first and then the top two layers are fused together. Moreover this process takes place under intense pressure that goes up to 1000 pounds per square inch, at a temperature ranging from 300 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Laminate floors are divided into four types with respect to their surface pattern.
Embossed
Heat sensitive polymer material is used in order to create raised surface texture. It is a less slippery floor best for high-traffic areas.

Smooth
It is a flat surface which resembles tile floors. It is more slippery but easier to clean.
Distressed
Distressed surfaces are carved out through machines which give aged look. It is mostly liked by traditionalists who prefer classical style over modern.
Patina
It is a sort of luster which is produced on wooden surfaces. Usually a thin layer is of paint is applied on embossed surface and is soon wiped away. The embossed spaces maintain paint and give the look of patina.
