The pros and cons of a solar LEASE. Benefits and drawbacks here.

These days solar companies are falling over themselves to make solar accessible to every homeowner.? But do the finance schemes being offered benefit you, or do they favor the Wall Street greed?

Homeowners in the United States are curious about the differences between leasing a home solar system and buying one out right. There are advantages and disadvantages to either method.? One thing for sure; the stock market loves it when you take on a solar lease, just as much as when you lease a car, or any other large piece of equipment.? No surprise here, as this has always been the case with any leasing instrument.? But before you go straight to skepticism over a lease, let?s take a look at some of the pros and cons of leasing verses outright purchase of solar.

First of all, how does solar panel leasing work?

When homeowners lease solar systems, they actually buy electricity from a company who owns the solar panels installed on their roof.? The price a lessee pays may be significantly lower or the same to what the utility company would charge for electricity.? These are called escalation and de-escalation clauses. Some companies like Sungevity and SunRun are third-party financers, and they don?t actually install the solar system. Instead, they contract with local solar integration companies to have the panels installed onto the roof. Others are companies like SolarCity, who actually handle both the financing and installation. Solar leasing terms vary considerably, and they usually allow homeowners to start their solar leasing program with no money down. Leasing contracts are available in increments of twenty, fifteen or ten year contracts, where homeowner?s are given the option to buy the system, if not, fully own the system outright at the end of the lease.

In which states can homeowners find solar leasing programs?

Solar leasing contracts can be found in 13 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Texas. It?s also available in Washington D.C. However, homeowners need to know that solar leasing is only available in locations in these areas that offer measurable state, local or utility rebates.

Which firms offer contracts?

SunRun, Sungevity and SolarCity are the major solar leasing partners in the United States. Sungevity and SunRun offer leasing, but they contract out to local installers. SolarCity does installation in house.

Four Reasons to Consider a Solar Lease:

Leasing doesn?t come with the same upfront costs that buying does. Most homeowners who consider solar installation are worried about the up front costs. Although terms vary based on one?s credit rating, local or state incentives and the solar capacity of one?s home, solar leasing usually allows people to go solar without putting any money down. This is one way for consumers to access solar energy who otherwise wouldn?t be able to put down the investment capital. And since fewer American homeowners have equity now than in the past, home equity loans that were once easy to obtain aren?t always available to finance solar installations.

Leasing doesn?t come with maintenance costs. When something malfunctions, lessees tied into a lease aren?t responsible. Repairs, maintenance and replacement are the responsibility of the solar leasing company.? For example, if a panel underperforms on delivering adequate power supply, or an inverter fails, or comes up for end of life replacement after ten years; it?s the solar lessor who promises and pays under warranty. Considering this costs a few thousand dollars, leasing can provide the financial peace of mind free from maintenance and uncertainty.

Leasing may cost less for energy verses the utility company. Some leases allow consumers to lock in static pricing on electricity rates for a decade or longer. ?

Leasing allows you some choice in how you design your lease terms.? Some leasing products allow you to choose how much money you want to put down toward the lease, as well as the escalation rate.

Five Reasons to Opt for Outright Purchase of Solar:

Buying can be a better economic bet. Solar leasing companies are in business to turn a profit from the leases they sell. They pocket the rebates and incentives, and use escalation and de-escalation options in order to better hone the leasing instrument into a financially rewarding investment for themselves.? The longer the lease agreement, the more they profit, and the less economic sense it may make for the consumer.? Solar leases aren?t a poorly crafted or unscrupulous device by themselves and if used correctly. The key to staying ahead of the potentially negative consequence of a solar lease is to assess your situation with a level financial analysis.? For the cost of a $250 feasibility study, you can hire an energy consultant-solar broker to help you compare the pros and the cons relative to your unique situation. Have them perform the lease verses purchase test, and then decide.

Buying panels provides flexibility. Lease contracts might specify a certain installation size, but when owners purchase their own system, they aren?t bound by details of equipment or power production.

It might be easier to sell your home without a lease. According to some real estate professionals, solar leases may present a potential slowdown or a threat to the sale of a home.? Some homebuyers may not want to deal with taking over an existing lease.? They may have other ideas for how they want to shop for solar, or they may not have the credit to qualify to take over a solar lease.?? Alternatively, most would be homeowners who cannot qualify for a solar lease, most certainly will not qualify for a home loan.? So, there is some discrepancy on this opinion verses common high credit score correlation to home loans and credit scores.

A solar purchase may add value to a preexisting home. Homeowners who are going to move in the next few years probably shouldn?t consider buying or leasing a solar panel installation. However, if consumers sell their home after they?ve benefited from the installation after several years, the money that they?ve invested may allow them to raise the asking price and compete more effectively against those home sellers who do not have a solar installation.?

Some solar leases will not let you pay down or pay off your system early. With more leasing options becoming available, you will be wise to check out the terms and conditions.? Some have reportedly 20 year contracts, while others let you pre pay or pay off the system in 7 years. ?

To buy or not to buy, this begs the question.? There are some contradictions between owning verses leasing.? In the end it comes down to what each individual consumer deems valuable to himself, both financial and intrinsic.

Some consumers want to emancipate from the grid for environmental reasons, no matter the cost, and within reason.? Others have skyrocketing electricity bills with no end in sight, where a lease may be the only access point short of outright purchase, to which funds may not be readily available.?

Kaleidoscopic pageant sets London Games rolling

LONDON (Reuters) - The Queen declared the London Olympics open after playing a cameo role in a dizzying ceremony designed to highlight the grandeur and eccentricities of the nation that invented modern sport.

Children's voices intertwining from the four corners of her United Kingdom ushered in an exuberant historical pageant of meadows, steel mills and megapixels before an audience of 60,000 in the Olympic Stadium and a probable billion television viewers around the globe.

Many of them gasped at the sight of the 86-year-old queen, marking her Diamond Jubilee this year, putting aside royal reserve in a video where she stepped onto a helicopter with James Bond actor Daniel Craig to be carried aloft from Buckingham Palace.

A film clip showed doubles of her and Bond skydiving towards the stadium and, moments later, she made her entrance in person.

"Great Britain was the cradle of modern sport," International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge told reporters. "You invented modern sport in the second half of the 19th century."

To underline the point, Bradley Wiggins, crowned five days earlier as Britain's first winner of the Tour de France and hoping to add more road cycling gold in London, tolled the world's largest tuned bell to begin the ceremony.

David Beckham, the English football icon who helped to convince the IOC to grant London the Games, sped down the Thames in a speedboat bearing the Olympic flame on the penultimate leg of a torch relay that inspired many ordinary people around Britain.

And in one moment of simple drama, the stadium fell silent as five giant, incandescent Olympic rings, symbolically forged from British steel mills, were lifted slowly out of the stadium by weather balloons, destined for the stratosphere.

More than 10,000 athletes from 204 countries will compete in 26 sports over 17 days of competition in the only city to have staged the modern Games three times.

Most of them were there for the traditional alphabetical parade of the national teams, not least the athletes from Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Yemen competing in their first Olympics since their peoples overthrew autocrats in Arab Spring revolutions.

Brunei and Qatar were led in by their countries' first ever female Olympians and so, along with Saudi Arabia, ended their status as the only countries to exclude women from their teams.

ROYAL ROLE

At a reception earlier in the day, the queen spelled out the role played by her family after the Olympics were revived in Athens in 1896.

"This will be the third London Olympiad. My great grandfather opened the 1908 Games at White City. My father opened the 1948 Games at Wembley Stadium. And, later this evening, I will take pleasure in declaring open the 2012 London Olympic Games at Stratford in the east of London," she said.

"Over recent months, many in these islands have watched with growing excitement the journey of the Olympic torch around the United Kingdom. As the torch has passed through villages and towns, it has drawn people together as families and communities.

"To me, this spirit of togetherness is a most important part of the Olympic ideal. And the British people can be proud of the part they have played in keeping the spirit alive."

The opening show, costing an estimated 27 million pounds ($42 million), was inspired by William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest", his late-life meditation on age and mortality.

Children were centre-stage throughout, starting from the moment when live pictures of junior choirs singing in the landscapes of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were beamed into the stadium's giant screens, four traditional songs woven together into a musical tapestry of Britain.

Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle began his sweep through British history by grassing over the arena in a depiction of the pastoral idyll mythologized by the romantic poet William Blake as "England's green and pleasant land".

Idyll turned swiftly to inferno as the Industrial Revolution's "dark Satanic mills" burst from the ground, before those same mills forged the last of five giant rings that interlocked and were carried aloft by balloons.

Many sequences turned the entire stadium into a vast video screen made up of tens of thousands of "pixels" attached to the seats. One giant message, unveiled by Tim Berners-Lee, British inventor of the world wide web, read "This is for Everyone".

The performance included surreal and often humorous references to British achievements, especially in social reform and the arts, and was due to conclude with a performance by former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Until the last few days, media coverage had been dominated by security firm G4S's admission that it could not provide enough guards for Olympic venues. Thousands of extra soldiers had to be deployed at the last minute, despite the company's multi-million-dollar contract from the government.

Counter-terrorism chiefs have played down fears of a major attack on the Games, and Prime Minister David Cameron said that a safe and secure Olympics was his priority.

Suicide attacks on London on July 7, 2005, the day after London was awarded the Games, killed 52 people. This year the Games will mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Munich massacre, when 11 Israeli Olympic team members were killed by Palestinian militants.

"This is the biggest security operation in our peacetime history, bar none," Cameron said, "and we are leaving nothing to chance."

ARCHERY WORLD RECORD

Although no medals will be awarded until Saturday, the women's football tournament started on Wednesday, and on Friday South Korean archers set the first world records of the Games.

Im Dong-hyun, who suffers from severe myopia and just aims at "a blob of yellow colour", broke his own 72-arrow world record with a score of 699 out of a possible 720, leading his two colleagues to a record combined score as well.

The Games' first medals will be decided in the women's 10 metres air rifle final on Saturday, with the big action coming in the men's cycling road race, where world champion Mark Cavendish is favourite to become Britain's first gold medallist.

In the evening, Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte are scheduled to line up for a classic confrontation in the men's 400 metres individual medley final.

Phelps, competing in seven events after winning a record eight gold medals four years ago in Beijing, is bidding to become the first swimmer to win gold in the same discipline three times in a row.

"This is going to be a special race," said Gregg Troy, head coach of the American men's team. "I can't imagine a better way to promote our sport than a race like this on the first day."

Garage Doors | Home Improvement Zones

Sectional doors first came to America in the 1930s. They are generally 4 to 6 plates made of metal, fiberglass and can even include a glass or plexiglass plate, which is ideal for light in the garage, when used as an extra bedroom or guest room.

This is a very attractive appearance of the door, when the panels is much lower than those typical of the doors, so that they do not ?industrial? look over it.

Although not the cheapest form of garage door, these doors an added value to the overall look of your home.

The plates are hinged to each other so that each plate to move independently. In the garage is also arranged a vertically on both sides of the door, it will keep track of each side of the door.

The parts of the door hinged to each other, allowing the doors to lift and an angle of 90 degrees formed by the roof and the front of the garage reduced.

The doors horizontally adjacent to the inside roof of the garage. Give this kind of door for maximum space in the garage.

Manual or electric garage doors?

It depends on your budget. Naturally, a manual door is much cheaper, but you really have the door up and down several times a day. It is much better that automatic doors are supplied with a remote control that allows you to access your garage that you can not get the car.

This shop manual up and down the door and wet when it rains. The electric door has a smooth ?shock free? mechanism to raise and lower the door within a few seconds. It is clear that if a person with poor health and / or are older than the electric version would be better.

Where can I buy garage doors?

Unfortunately, there are very few of these garage doors manufactured here in the UK. Germany and Sweden are the big players in this market door. Yet your local dealer will probably be able to get these doors if they do not have them in stock.

Ask to see your local Business Directory to see if you are someone who needs instead of the offer and install. If it fails, you can check the web for dealers in your area.

Understanding Alcoholism Through Its Four Stages

Alcoholism is a disease that requires medical attention to prevent its progression. It is a widespread complex disease in the US that remains inadequately understood. It has many complications particularly on health, emotional, psychological, social and economic aspects. The four basic alcoholism symptoms include yearning for the alcohol, physical dependence, increase in tolerance and the loss of control.

The Four Stages Of Alcoholism

Alcoholism can be better understood when the assessment of the alcoholism symptoms is done using the four alcoholism stages. There are certain references that merely identify three stages: these are increasing dependency, addiction, and the end stage or late stage of alcoholism. There are certain references too that present four stages based on the alcoholism symptoms manifested by the patient.

In the first stage, consuming of alcohol is used to address certain emotional predicament. The drinker wants to "get high" in order to escape stress, problems and inhibitions. It is used as a source of confidence to be able to socialize, talk and be comfortable with other people. The constancy of drinking can most certainly increase the tolerance for alcohol so that one is motivated to drink more for the same high that used to be attained for lesser quantity.

In the second stage, the need to drink is more frequent that it starts even in the mornings. The degree of tolerance has gone considerably higher. This means that one needs to consume a much higher dose in order to attain the "high". Losing control is not as frequent yet, but physical symptoms are becoming increasingly apparent such as blackouts, gastric uneasiness, hand tremors and hangovers.

The loss of control becomes more frequent in the third stage. The dependency is confirmed and the day cannot pass without drinking. Once sober, the alcoholic may feel embarrassment but these are all forgotten once drinking starts. Other problems start cropping up as one neglects personal health, studies or work, family and other social involvements.

The last stage is called the end stage which is characteristically the terminal stage when all hell breaks loose - failing health, damaged relationships, loss of job or failing grades in school, and loss of social life among other things.

One may ask why an alcoholic must sacrifice everything for booze. Imagine obsession for alcohol as a progressive disease. Think about the embarrassing moments and the bouts of related health problems like pancreatitis or liver cirrhosis. Alcoholism is a disease; one can only get it out of one's system with success through rehabilitation.

Huddled at the center of the Green last Friday at 9 p.m., Paul Marino ?04 stood with a small group of students in Theater 65: Drama in Performance, to plot their next place of attack. Marino?s eyebrows furrowed as he looked around for an unsuspicious crowd.?We?re right on their tails,? Marino said, giddy with the thrill of the chase.Their game, however, was ?pop-up? Shakespeare ? Act 3, Scene 2 of ?Julius Caesar,? to be precise.Marino pioneered performing Shakespeare on the subway in New York City as a busking act in 2011, an art that he has since brought to London and Berlin. Busking refers to the practice of musical or artistic performance in a public space, usually while asking for money. Invited by the Hopkins Center, Marino returned to Dartmouth this past weekend for HOPFest to work with Theater 65 students on performing scenes from ?Romeo and Juliet? and ?King Lear,? among others, in surprising places around campus.?In New York, there is a culture of subway performance ? break dancers, mariachi bands, preachers,? Marino said. ?I took that space and what was already happening there and introduced something new. Performing theater on the subway as buskers was novel.?While students performed alongside Marino without asking for money, they still had the experience of transforming a space of isolated individuals into an engaged community of onlookers, Marino said. This is the concept that most inspires Marino?s work, he said.?I am impressed by the notion of taking a space and an unsuspecting gathering of strangers and uniting them as an audience organically without the conventions of a theater,? Marino said.Ben Page ?12, who performed Mark Antony?s monologue from Act 3, Scene 2 of ?Julius Caesar,? was initially hesitant when he learned he would have to command an audience outside the boundaries of a theater.?My first reaction was a mixture of excitement and nervousness because it?s one thing to perform in front of an audience who gathers to see you, it?s another to stand up in front of a group of people and to perform when they really have no idea what?s going on,? Page said. ?I didn?t know how people were going to react.?Another difference in the audience?s reaction outside of a theater is the humor in otherwise tragic scenes, Page said.?The last scene of ?Romeo and Juliet,? where the characters kill themselves, is, for lack of a better word, very sad if you?re seeing it in a theater,? Page said. ?But if you do it on the subway, people laugh and cheer. If you start busting out Shakespeare, the reaction is more like amusement. It?s almost silly, and the juxtaposition of Shakespeare in [an atmosphere with no] Shakespeare is very dramatic, and people laugh and smile.?The best scenes for pop-up performances often include fighting or death, Marino said. He looks to provide the audience with some sort of ?finality? at the end of each performance, he said.Sarah Peck ?14 played a servant in Act 3, Scene 7 ?King Lear,? in which Cornwall gouges Gloucester?s eyes. Peck?s scene attracted an enormous crowd immediately due to its performed fight, after which her character, Cornwall, dies from being stabbed by Lear?s evil daughter Regan, Peck said. When selecting scenes, Marino said he often opts for Act 3 and Act 5 because Act 3 holds the turning points, while Act 5 usually has a strong ending.?I ask myself, ?Does it have enough on its own that you don?t have to know the whole play and can be entertained without putting it into the context of the play??? Marino said. The very nature of surprise performances has a degree of drama in its own right, according to Marino. He described the excitement of jumping from G to L to F subway lines in New York and sprinting between cars to carry out another scene.?The energy is palpable,? Marino said. ?I always talk about it like ?my fix.? You get addicted to it. It?s like ecstasy. No other experience in my life has even come close to it.?Audience reactions are typically positive, Marino said, a statement which proved true this weekend during HOPFest. Crowds encircled the Dartmouth performers, while children pushed their way to the front, enthralled by the absurdity and excitement of a surprise performance.?The important thing is to be flexible and improvisational in blocking and more perceptive about the audience while you?re performing, so you can engage them as much as possible,? Peck said.Busking on the subway remains illegal in most cities, but despite countless run-ins with police, ?young and old, gangsters and intellectuals, people respond with respect to what we do,? Marino said. In London, Marino was even tipped by an undercover cop who would have otherwise shut down their performance, he said. After each performance, ?the audience and performers are all friends and you can talk to everybody in the car because you?ve really shared something with them,? Marino said.Marino aims to accomplish the same sense of humor from this weekend?s performances in his subway career around the world. Whether through fake eyeballs to accompany the gouging of Gloucester?s eyes or the sheer absurdity of standing on a cube in the center of the Green reciting Mark Antony?s monologue, the performances brought together a diverse Hanover audience in appreciation of the bizarre and the hilarious.

Sides spill over at hearing on proposed NY sugary drink ban ...

NEW YORK ? Medical professionals lined up at a public hearing Tuesday to speak in favor of a proposed ban on large-sized sugary drinks at New York City restaurants, cafeterias and snack trucks, while opponents decried the plan as an assault on personal freedom and wondered what tasty but unhealthy foods might be targeted next.

New York City?s health board heard hours of testimony on a proposed rule that would limit soft-drink cup and bottle sizes at food service establishments to no larger than 16 ounces.

Medical experts spared no rhetoric in hailing the proposal as a way to protect the public, saying that sodas and other sweetened beverages are a leading factor in a health epidemic linked to poor eating habits that kills thousands of New Yorkers every year. More than one likened soda companies to big tobacco.

One doctor said before the hearing that the calorie-packed beverages consumers now down with abandon increase the risk of diabetes, and are responsible for a big share of the ?massive suffering and premature death? linked to obesity.

?Soda in large amounts is metabolically toxic,? said Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. ?It?s obvious that this is the right thing to do.?

A 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola has roughly the same calorie count as a McDonald?s hamburger, but Kelly Brownell, a psychology, epidemiology and public health professor at Yale University, said it is easier to over-drink than over-eat.

?You don?t feel as full when you consume calories in liquids,? he said.

Critics ridiculed the idea that city officials would be trying to regulate how much people eat or drink.

City Councilman Daniel Halloran III called the proposal a ?feel-good placebo? that would hurt profit margins at small businesses while failing to improve anyone?s health.

He questioned whether a limit on the size of steak was around the corner.

Another critical councilman, Oliver Koppell, called the ban ?a clear overreaching of government into people?s everyday lives.?

?This infringement on the rights of New Yorkers leads us to ask what will be banned next??

Joy Dubost, a nutritionist who works for the National Restaurant Association, said the proposal wasn?t backed up by scientific evidence.

?It?s not reasonable to blame or cite one product,? she said.

The proposal requires only the approval of the Board of Health ? appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg ? to take effect. But opponents could still sue to block the ban, or they could convince legislators to step in and block the proposal.

The board is scheduled to vote on the measure Sept. 13.

Since Bloomberg proposed the ban in May, opponents including members of the restaurant and soft-drink industries as well as libertarians have accused him of attempting to institute a ?nanny state? with far-reaching government controls that infringe on individual choice. City officials, meanwhile, argue they are trying to save lives in the face of an epidemic that is killing New Yorkers and costing $4 billion a year.

The portion size restrictions would only apply to food-service businesses regulated by the Health Department, including restaurants, food carts, sports arenas and movie theaters. Grocery stores, drug stores and some convenience stores are regulated by the state and would be unaffected.

Drinks that are more than half milk or 70 percent juice would be exempt, and it wouldn?t apply to lower-calorie drinks like water or diet soda, or to alcoholic beverages.

In a letter released Monday by The New England Journal of Medicine, New York University researchers said the ban could affect nearly two-thirds of drinks bought at the city?s fast-food restaurants, according to a survey of more than 1,600 receipts. On average, sugary-drink buyers could consume 74 calories less per fast-food outing, the letter said.

Parents of severely disabled kids say they enrich their lives

Families dealing with trisomy 13-18 face grim predictions, turn to online support, study found.

(HealthDay) -- When Vanessa Hernandez's sixth child was born, she knew right away her daughter was different.

Hernandez's pediatrician wept as she told her the diagnosis. The baby had trisomy 13, a devastating chromosomal abnormality. Most children die before their first birthday and have serious mental and physical disabilities, including heart and breathing problems.

Hernandez's daughter, now 19 months old, hasn't had an easy time. She's had seizures, has a tracheotomy to assist her with breathing and has been fed mostly through a feeding tube.

Despite the hurdles, Isabel is a source of great joy to her family, Hernandez said. Isabel smiles and laughs frequently, and there are no indications she is in pain. Her parents celebrate small achievements. Isabel's five siblings love her fiercely. "She gets the most love in the house. They are very protective of her. Nobody leaves the room without giving her a hug and a kiss," Hernandez said.

Though many people believe that raising child with severe birth defects would be more than they could bear, many parents of children with severe disabilities say that couldn't be further from the truth.

In a new study, nearly all -- 97 percent -- of 332 parents of children with trisomy 13 or trisomy 18, another chromosomal abnormality that can cause similarly severe problems and shortened lifespans, described their child as "happy." Parents also said that no matter how short their lives, their child enriched their family.

"Despite the fact that often these children live less than a year and they are disabled, families find they are happy children. They find joy in their children. They enrich the family, enrich the couple and the child's life had meaning," said study author Dr. Annie Janvier, an associate professor of pediatrics and clinical ethics at University of Montreal. "None of the parents said they regretted not terminating the pregnancy. None said the life was unworthy of living. All of the parents reported the quality of life of their child was a good quality of life."

But that's not always what doctors tell parents to expect, according to the study in the August issue of Pediatrics. Many parents -- 87 percent -- were told their child's condition was "incompatible with life," 57 percent were told their child would live a life of suffering, 50 percent were told their child would be a "vegetable" and 23 percent were told their child would "ruin their family."

The medical community, including the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program textbook, recommends against resuscitation for trisomy 13 and 18.

Dr. Roya Samuels, a pediatrician at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., called the research "eye-opening." Physicians need to present objective information and statistics on what parents should expect with trisomy 13, 18 or other congenital conditions for that matter. But those numbers, she added, need to be tempered with compassion, an understanding that quality of life is highly subjective and that parents may readjust their own beliefs about what constitutes quality of life after the birth of their child.

"There are a lot of lessons for pediatricians and health care professionals to learn. It highlights the divide that there is between the physician and the patient," Samuels said. "Sometimes the physician can be a little bit too objective, a little bit too harsh with statistics and invoking the element of fear when it comes to delivering news of a diagnosis like trisomy 13 or 18."

Rick Santorum, who recently ran for president, spoke about his youngest daughter, Bella, who was diagnosed at 5 days old with trisomy 18, in a campaign video. "We felt blessed that we had Bella, yet we were told by the medical community, 'Why do anything? Just let her go.'"

Santorum went on to say, "We felt we owed her the opportunity, the chance to do as well as she could. Over the past few years, she has been a wonderful, joyful, center of the universe, if you will, for our family."

That sentiment isn't unusual, said Barbara Farlow, a study co-author and mother of nine from Toronto who gave birth to a daughter with trisomy 13 in 2005. The condition was detected by a prenatal test at 21 weeks. An engineer and financial analyst, Farlow considered terminating the pregnancy -- she had a busy life with five typically developing kids who excelled in school and sports.

But she and her husband researched the condition. They chose not to terminate after meeting families who had children with the same diagnosis, and seeing the love they had for their children.

"Doctors have controlled all the information about these conditions. Many would say, 'Your child will be a vegetable. This will ruin your life. Your child will live a life of suffering, and parents made decisions based on that," Farlow said. "A lot of people equate disability with suffering. Not necessarily 'pain' suffering but if you can't do what other people do, then you're suffering."

"With the Internet and the development of online parent support groups, parents have been able to acquire a different view than what the doctor described to them," Farlow said.

Farlow's daughter, Annie, lived 80 days. During her life, she helped teach the family compassion, patience and to appreciate every day, Farlow said. "Before you're in this type of situation, it's easy to make a passing judgment about what lives are worth living," she said. "That changes when you have a life placed in your hands."

The stories of these families are uplifting, and give pediatricians and parents facing difficult decisions a point of view many may not have considered, Samuels said. But it's also important for families to realize that caring for a child with trisomy 13 and 18 is a tough road, financially and emotionally for parents, while children may be in and out of the ICU. And though some kids beat the odds, many parents of children with trisomy 13 and 18, which involves an extra copy of chromosome 13 or 18, face the grief of burying their child.

"We have children with these conditions, and the parents go through hell at times," she said.

Those sorts of worries don't escape Hernandez, who lives on Long Island, N.Y. She urges parents to reach out to online support groups like the one she runs, Living with Trisomy 13. At least 18 other such groups exist, according to background information in the article.

"I don't want to tell anybody any pipe dream. It's not all sugarplum fairies. The first year my other children basically didn't have parents. My house didn't get cleaned and the laundry didn't get done. It was all about Isabel," she said. "But we want people to know the real story. To give them both sides, and let them make a decision. Don't try to scare them into something."

"My life is better because of Isabel. All of our lives are better because of her."

ASK Pak Deh: Learning To Be Good Leader

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Leadership is a quality that is initiated by one person and then developed by many. However, the most important criteria for becoming a leader is to think out of the box and be able to express the importance of that idea to others, so that they are convinced.

Though there are a few people who could be called born leaders, the quality can be acquired by anyone. So, if you want to develop good leadership skills, take a look at the paragraphs below and find a few suggestions.

How Can One Inculcate Leadership Skills

The world today, has seen many great leaders who gave the world a completely new perspective of looking at life and it is because of their constant efforts, that we are seeing progress in every field of life. Science and technology, industry, politics, global awareness, social services, fashion, entertainment, etc., are some of the areas where leaders have emerged to make changes and take the world forward. Some of the leadership qualities and skills, seen in a leader are; creativity, integrity, positivity, humility, honesty, courage, determination, sincerity, commitment, sensitivity, confidence, passion, wisdom, and compassion!

All these are not innate qualities which a person is born with, but they are those which are learned through experiences and an open mind. You can be a good leader, but you have to be open to change, and have the strength to face whatever comes your way. We cannot give you specific activities to develop such skills, but we can surely make you aware of some self improvement methods for the same.

Be a Good Listener
One has to be patient and listen to what others have to say. There are people who are very creative and are excellent in their professional lives, but can't express their views as expected. Recognizing their talents and giving them a chance to speak could be your first step to becoming a good leader. After listening to them carefully, analyze what their points are and then with your own creativity put them in front of the others so that it could be understood by all.

Approachability Helps
You must have a positive outlook towards things around you. When you are optimistic, you look at things in a much better way and this makes you a pleasant personality. You can connect to people around you and thus assure them that you are an approachable and friendly individual. With this image, you not only gather trust but also help them depend on you for suggestions, advice and solutions. You too can be an open individual and share your views and thoughts with them so there is exchange of ideas.

Believe in Yourself and Others
Another extremely important quality which is a must in order to develop such skills is "faith". Most leaders in the past and today are people who believe in change and the consequences of it. They believed in themselves and the people around them, because of which they could lead. When you have faith in yourself first, you build a certain level of confidence which teaches you to differentiate right from wrong. This confidence also helps you to take chances and believe that they will bring out something new. Along with the assurance that you share with others, this faith, also keeps you going ahead in life guiding them.

These skills will not only help yourself but others too, since, what good is a shepherd without his sheep?

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? An Air Force instructor implicated in a sweeping sex scandal at one of the nation's busiest military training bases was convicted in military court Friday of raping one female recruit and sexually assaulting several others.

Staff Sgt. Luis Walker, the first Lackland Air Force Base instructor to stand trial in the scandal, was found guilty by a jury of seven military personnel on all 28 counts he faced, including rape, aggravated sexual contact and multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The jury deleted a clause from two counts that accused Walker of making flirtatious and lewd comments to trainees. However, it upheld the overall counts containing the deleted clauses, which accused him of trying to cultivate a sexual relationship with two trainees.

Walker faces up to life in prison and a dishonorable discharge at his sentencing hearing, which starts Saturday. He showed no emotion upon hearing the verdict. Outside the base courtroom afterward, Walker was met by his father and other relatives, some of whom were crying. He will remain free pending sentencing.

Walker is among 12 Lackland instructors investigated for sexual misconduct toward at least 31 female trainees. Six instructors have been charged on counts ranging from rape to adultery. Walker faced the most serious charges and was the first to stand trial.

Lackland is where every American airman receives basic training. It has about 475 instructors for the approximately 35,000 airmen who graduate every year. About one in five is female, pushed through eight weeks of basic training by a group of instructors, 90 percent of whom are men.

The sexual misconduct at the base apparently began in 2009, but the first woman didn't come forward until last year. The first allegations were levied against Walker, who is accused of crimes that allegedly took place between October 2010 and January 2011.

According to prosecutors, Walker had sexual intercourse with 4 of the 10 female recruits. He was also accused of making flirtatious or sexually suggestive comments, sending inappropriate text messages and sometimes groping his recruits.

Walker also is accused of forcing five recruits to engage in sexual acts by threatening their military careers and intimidating two of the women into lying about his alleged misconduct, prosecutors alleged.

Several of Walker's alleged victims testified during his court-martial, including one airman who described how Walker lured her into an office and sexually assaulted her on a bed, ignoring her pleas to stop.

The women told jurors that Walker gained their trust to get them alone in his office or an empty dormitory where he forced them into kissing, touching and intercourse. Those testifying said they didn't tell anybody at first because they feared being booted from the Air Force.

The Associated Press is not naming those who testified because they are alleged sexual assault victims.

Meanwhile, the case of another former Air Force training instructor has been referred to a general court-martial, according to an Air Force statement issued Friday evening.

Staff Sgt. Craig LeBlanc is charged with sexual misconduct, obstructing justice and making a false official statement. He is accused of using his post as a military instructor to sexually assault and pursue a sexual relationship with one female trainee, and have a wrongful sexual relationship with another. No trial date has been set.

One of the other instructors charged in the case, Staff Sgt. Peter Vega-Maldonado, pleaded guilty in June, admitting he had sex with a female trainee in exchange for a sentence of 90 days' confinement. He later acknowledged he had been involved with a total of 10 trainees ? a number previously unknown to investigators.

Kim plans economic change in North Korea

BEIJING (Reuters) - Impoverished North Korea is gearing up to experiment with agricultural and economic reforms after young leader Kim Jong-un and his powerful uncle purged the country's top general for opposing change, a source with ties to both Pyongyang and Beijing said.

The source added that the cabinet had created a special bureau to take control of the decaying economy from the military, one of the world's largest, which under Kim's father was given pride of place in running the country.

The downfall of Vice Marshal Ri Yong-ho and his allies gives the untested new leader and his uncle Jang Song-thaek, who married into the Kim family dynasty and is widely seen as the real power behind the throne, the mandate to try to save the battered economy and prevent the secretive regime's collapse.

The source has correctly predicted events in the past, including North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006 days before it was conducted, as well as the ascension of Jang.

The changes could herald the most significant reforms by the North in decades. Previous attempts at a more market driven economy have floundered, most recently a drastic currency revaluation in late 2009 which triggered outrage and is widely believed to have resulted in the execution of its chief proponent.

"Ri Yong-ho was the most ardent supporter of Kim Jong-il's 'military first' policy," the source told Reuters, referring to Kim Jong-un's late father who plunged the North deeper into isolation over its nuclear ambitions, abject poverty and political repression.

The biggest problem was that he opposed the government taking over control of the economy from the military, the source said, requesting anonymity to avoid repercussions.

North Korea's state news agency KCNA had cited illness for the surprise decision to relieve Ri of all his posts, including the powerful role of vice chairman of the ruling party's Central Military Commission, though in recent video footage he had appeared in good health.

Ri was very close to Kim Jong-il and had been a leading figure in the military. Ri's father fought against the Japanese alongside Kim Jong-il's late father Kim Il-sung, who founded North Korea and is still revered as its eternal president.

The revelation by the source was an indication of a power struggle in the secretive state in which Kim Jong-un and Jang look to have further consolidated political and military power.

Kim Jong-un was named Marshal of the republic this week in a move that adds to his glittering array of titles and cements his position following the death of his father in December. He already heads the Workers' Party of Korea and is first chairman of the National Defence Commission.

The North Korean Embassy in Beijing, reached by telephone, declined to comment.

REFORMS

Some North Korea experts said the comments confirmed their belief that the new leadership would try to make some changes to the stultifying controls over the economy.

"This should not come as a surprise. Kim Jong-un appears to have done considerable study on this (reform), taken a lot of lessons, and is probably trying to mould it in a way that suits their situation and in a way that blends with the existing policy. Ri's departure has a lot to do with this process," said Korea University professor Yoo Ho-yeol, speaking from Seoul.

He predicted that Jang would increasing press ahead with joint-venture projects with China, the only major ally to which the North can turn for economic help.

But Zhang Lianggui, a North Korea expert at China's Central Party School, was skeptical.

"You can see this from the repeated criticisms of reform and opening up that appear in the Rodong Sinmun (North Korean party newspaper). They openly criticize any moves in this direction. North Korea is quite indignant when it comes to this point."

POLITICAL BUREAU

A North Korea's cabinet has created a "political bureau" designed to wrest power from the 1.2 million-strong military in order to run the economy, which has been in shambles after a crippling famine in the 1990s, the source said.

"In the past, the cabinet was empty with no say in the economy. The military controlled the economy, but that will now change," the source said.

Kim Jong-un has set up an "economic reform group" in the ruling Workers' Party to look at agricultural and economic reforms, the source said, adding that North Korea will learn from its giant neighbor and solitary benefactor, China.

Beijing leaders are thought to have been pressing Pyongyang to do more to reform the economy, worried that a collapse of the North could send refugees streaming across its border, and cause the loss of a strategic buffer to South Korea and the large contingent of U.S. troops which help protect it.

It was unclear who will head the cabinet's "political bureau" and the party's "economic reform group", but change was inevitable, the source said.

In sharp contrast to the austere, reclusive image of his father, state media have shown Kim Jong-un visiting fun fairs, speaking in public and applauding at a rock concert.

Women appear to have been given more freedoms, including wearing short skirts, although 200,000 people are in prison camps in the impoverished and isolated country.

The source dismissed speculation of any political fallout from the purge, saying: "Kim Jong-un and Jang Song-thaek are in control of the military."

Jang has long been seen as a proponent of reform of an economy which through mismanagement has entirely missed out on the fruits of dramatic growth of neighbors like China and South Korea.

His push for reform was widely seen as having triggered a period of exile but he was later rehabilitated and given the primary role of supporting Kim Jong-il's son when he was being groomed to eventually take over the leadership.

North Korea has yet to name Ri's replacement as head of the army, the source said.

It was unclear how many of Ri's men have been sacked, but the source said they have not been jailed. An assessment of the changes by the South Korean government seen by Reuters, said that some 20 top officials had been purged since Kim Jong-un began his ascent to power.
