(AP) ? Outfielder Marlon Byrd was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball on Monday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Major League Baseball said the 34-year-old Byrd tested positive for Tamoxifen, which can reduce side effects of steroid use and increase testosterone. It is often used to treat breast cancer patients.

"I made an inexcusable mistake," Byrd said in a statement released by the players' association. "Several years ago, I had surgery for a condition that was private and unrelated to baseball. Last winter, I suffered a recurrence of that condition and I was provided with a medication that resulted in my positive test. Although that medication is on the banned list, I absolutely did not use it for performance enhancement reasons."

Byrd is currently a free agent, and will be placed on the restricted list for the duration of his suspension, which began immediately. He started the season with the Cubs and was dealt to the Red Sox on April 21. He was designated for assignment by Boston on June 9 and released four days later.

"I am mortified by my carelessness and I apologize to everyone who loves this game as I do," Byrd said. "I will serve my suspension, continue to work hard and hope that I am given an opportunity to help a Club win later this season."

In 2009, Byrd said he was using supplements provided by SNAC System, a company founded by Victor Conte, who also was the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative.

BALCO was at the center of a wide-ranging scandal involving performance-enhancing drugs that enveloped several top-level athletes, including Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Barry Bonds. Conte pleaded guilty to steroid distribution in July 2005 and served four months in jail.

Byrd said the supplements were all OK to use under MLB rules. He had never before been suspended for failing an PED test.

"Any nutritional supplements I ever provided to Marlon Byrd were legal products that contained no banned substances," Conte wrote on Twitter. "I provided Marlon Byrd with nutritional and training advice which had nothing whatsoever to do with any type of prohibited substances."

In an email to The Associated Press, Conte said he still supports Byrd.

"Marlon Byrd is a terrific person and did not use a drug to cheat," Conte said in his email. "Look at his numbers this season, the worst of his career. Traded and then cut. I was not aware of his medical condition. Marlon is my friend and I will always have his back."

Byrd hit .210 in 47 games with the two teams, though he hit .270 with a homer and seven RBIs in 34 games with Boston. The Red Sox picked him up when they had a shortage in the outfield after a rash of injuries.

"He played here and he played well," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "I had no indication or I don't think anyone did."

The 34-year-old Byrd has played for five teams in 11 major league seasons and is a career .278 hitter.

Byrd finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2003 with the Phillies and was a National League All-Star with the Cubs in 2010.

Turkey jet crisis unlikely to pull NATO into Syria

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Syria's downing of a Turkish military jet has the feel of a turning point that could drag Western powers into a conflict that is spiraling out of control.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has vowed to hold Syria to account, while Britain's foreign minister said Damascus won't be allowed to act with impunity.

But for all the hard talk, the prospect of Western military intervention in Syria remains remote, at best.

For one thing, military action is unlikely to get the support of either the U.N. Security Council or the Arab League, and outside intervention without the blessing of both of those bodies is all but unthinkable. And there is little appetite among the 28 NATO countries ? of which the U.S. is the largest ? for another war in the Middle East.

Libya was hard enough, and for a many nervous months it looked as if that conflict might end in an embarrassing stalemate for the West. And Syria would be tougher than Libya. Syrian President Bashar Assad's army is better equipped, better trained, better paid and far more loyal than was that of late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddhafi.

So for the moment, despite the increasing violence and the staggering number of deaths, action by the international community seems to be limited to sanctions and strong words.

And so it was on Monday, when foreign ministers from the 27 European Union countries condemned Syria's downing Friday of a Turkish jet, but said the bloc would not support military action in the troubled country.

"What happened is to be considered very seriously," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal. Having gotten his denunciation out of the way, he let the other shoe drop: "We do not go for any interventions."

Turkish officials have said the jet mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace, but was warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile (1.6 kilometers) inside international airspace when Syria shot it down. The Turkish pilots are still missing.

Turkey immediately called a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's governing body, on Tuesday to discuss the incident. Any NATO member can request such consultations if their territorial integrity has been threatened.

An alliance diplomat said ambassadors will discuss Turkey's concerns ? and would likely condemn the downing.

"But there won't be anything more specific than that," said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of standing rules.

Turkey, too, appeared to be attempting to moderate the situation, trying to balance a response that would assuage domestic outrage over the shooting, while avoiding a conflict. Turkey has been one of the fiercest critics of Assad's crackdown. But at this point, it has no wish to inflame already-heightened tensions.

A Turkish government official said the government was trying to ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Syria, where activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the 15-month uprising. He said the country was still working out what steps to take ? though they would not include military intervention.

"We are not talking about war, but we will keep the pressure on Syria and give it no chance to catch its breath," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Mustafa Kibaroglu, a professor of international relations at Istanbul's Okan University, said that by calling Tuesday's emergency meeting, Turkey was trying to show Syria that it has the full support of NATO and the European Union.

But he dismissed the possibility the alliance would activate a rule in its founding treaty ? Article 5 ? that declares that an attack against any NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

"Unless there is another ... act of provocation (from Syria), there will be no activation of Article 5," Kibaroglu said.

Syria has said it was unaware that the F-4 Phantom jet belonged to Turkey, and that it was protecting its air space against an unknown intruder. In the past, Israeli warplanes have penetrated Syrian airspace by flying over the Mediterranean coastline.

Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was an accident, caused by the "automatic response" of an officer commanding an anti-aircraft gun. The man saw a jet coming at him at high speed and low altitide and opened fire, Makdissi said.

Analysts said that, although the latest incident will likely be contained, the conflict in Syria is now threatening to draw in other nations.

"Syria's apology will probably quell the immediate outrage," said Barak Seener, a Middle East expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a British military think tank.

"But it's increasingly clear that as the conflict escalates there will be a spillover effect with regional consequences," he said. "While NATO will not get involved yet, this illustrates that international actors will increasingly be sucked into the conflict."

Still, there is a sense of war-weariness in NATO, an aversion to any more involvement in the Middle East after last year's conflict over Libya.

The alliance's primary focus remains the costly war in Afghanistan, where the alliance still has about 130,000 troops, a decade after the ouster of the Taliban regime. Although NATO forces enjoy overwhelming superiority in numbers, firepower and mobility, the guerrillas are showing no sign of giving up.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said that the alliance would need a clear international mandate, and regional support, before it embarked on a mission in Syria.

Last year, the alliance launched air attacks on Libyan government targets only after receiving a mandate from the U.N. Security Council, along with backing from the Arab League.

But in Syria's case, the Arab League hasn't been able to agree on the need for military intervention. Even Syria's different opposition groups are riven by divisions over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt. Some in the Syrian opposition argue that it would reduce their country to rubble, leaving them nothing on which to build a new future once Assad was gone.

And Russia and China ? both veto-wielding members of the Security Council ? have consistently shielded Assad's regime from international sanctions over its violent crackdown on protests. Russia also has continued to provide Syria with arms, despite Western calls for a halt in supplies.

Last week, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Syrian crisis on the sidelines of a Group of 20 economic conference in Mexico.

The meeting ended without apparent agreement on how to end the violence.

Islamist Morsi named Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous Morsi supporters wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer as soon as they heard the outcome announced live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

"I pledge to be a president who serves his people and works for them," Morsi said on his official web page. "I will not betray God in defending your rights and the rights of this nation." He was scheduled to address the nation Sunday night in his first speech after being declared president.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

NATO to discuss downing of Turkish plane by Syria

(AP) ? NATO leaders will meet this week to discuss whether and how to respond to Syria's downing of a Turkish jet in what Turkey insists was international airspace. The incident has spiked regional tensions caused by the conflict in Syria, where reports Sunday said nearly 40 people died in new clashes between rebels and regime forces.

The jet's wreckage was found in the Mediterranean at a depth of 4,265 feet (1,300 meters), Turkish state media reported Sunday. The two pilots remain unaccounted for.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile inside international airspace when it was shot down off the coast of Latakia.

Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was "not an attack" and that the aircraft had violated its airspace. But Turkish authorities say Syria didn't warn the Turkish plane nor send its own jets to confront it. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was expected to make a statement Tuesday and might announce some retaliatory steps.

"No one should dare to test Turkey's capabilities," Davutoglu said Sunday.

Meantime, at the request of Turkey, NATO's governing body will meet Tuesday to discuss the incident, said Oana Lungescu, a NATO spokeswoman. The consultations will focus on article 4 of NATO's founding Washington Treaty.

"Under article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened," Lungescu said. The North Atlantic Council ? the ambassadors of the 28 NATO countries ? will decide whether to respond, she said.

The last time article 4 was invoked was nine years ago ? also by Turkey ? after tensions with neighboring Iraq escalated. However, that case did not lead to the invocation of article 5, which declares that an attack against any single NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

Despite some opposition leaders' calls for Western military intervention in Syria, the United States and allies have been hesitant to get involved in what could prove a protracted conflict, preferring the diplomatic route. Syrian allies Russia and China have already shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions and stridently oppose any military intervention.

It's unlikely the downing of the Turkish plane will change those calculations, despite Ankara's appeal for the NATO meeting.

In October 1989, two Syrian MiG-21s violated Turkish air space and shot down a Turkish plane on a geographical survey mission, killing all five crew members. Syria at the time promised to severely punish the pilots, who disregarded Turkish orders not to enter Turkish airspace.

Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science at the Ankara University, told private NTV television that Turkey had repeatedly sent its jets across the Syrian border for several weeks to show its military muscle at the time.

Turkey has been one of the most vociferous critics of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime as it has cracked down over the past 15 months on an increasingly armed popular uprising. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, most of them civilians.

The plane's downing has already drawn international criticism from other countries pushing Assad to stop his crackdown.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane and that Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself, and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior."

Hague met last week with United Nations and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team. Hague noted Sunday that "The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Italy's foreign minister decried the shooting down of the plane as "a further, very grave and unacceptable action by the Assad regime." In a written statement, Giulio Terzi promised that Italy will play an active role in the NATO meeting Tuesday.

Syrian activists reported violence in different parts of the country Sunday, saying nearly 40 people were killed.

The deadliest incident was in the northern town of Ariha where a shell hit a home killing seven members of the same family, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.? A video posted online showed the seven men's bodies, some badly mutilated, including one who had part of his head blown off.

Activists also reported intense shelling and clashes between rebels and troops in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour and the central city of Homs, which has been under a government attack for the past two weeks.

Earlier Sunday, activists said rebels captured a military base in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, confiscating large amounts of ammunition. The Observatory said 16 government troops died in the attacks on the base near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh and nearby checkpoints early Sunday.

Area activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels had removed hundreds of artillery shells from the base. Saeed added via Skype that troops retaliated with intense shelling on the area using helicopter gunships.

On Friday, state media said 25 people were kidnapped by "terrorists" and killed in Daret Azzeh. Activists said the 25 killed were pro-regime gunmen known as shabiha.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency, meanwhile, said gunmen from Turkey clashed with Syrian border guards in Rabiah, a region in the coastal Latakia province. SANA said several infiltrators died in the late Saturday clash, while others reportedly returned to Turkey. It said several Syrian border guards were hurt, but didn't specify how many.

Turkey denies sheltering armed Syrian rebels, although many Syrian refugees have fled to camps on the Turkish side of the border.

Also on Sunday, Syrian opposition groups met in Brussels to hash out differences and plan for a democratic transition. The disparate groups are divided over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt and whether to engage in dialogue with Assad's regime. The conference, attended by some 50 people, will continue Monday.

Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah, meanwhile, said Sunday that three other Syrian pilots had defected last week, even before a pilot flew his warplane into neighboring Jordan. He said the other three crossed overland into Jordan. He was unsure if the four pilots knew each other or had coordinated their escape from Syria.

Jordan Staal mixes a wedding with a Hurricanes' trade

RALEIGH, N.C. ? For Jordan Staal, the date June 22, 2012, was supposed to be memorable for one reason: It was his wedding day.

Staal would be married in Thunder Bay, Ont., and he would have a number of his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates on hand for the grand occasion.

Things soon changed. After the nuptials at 1 o?clock, everyone moved on to the reception, where toasts were to be made. But that?s when Staal learned from his agent that his life had changed in another big way ? he had been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The news was announced at the NHL Entry Draft ? in Pittsburgh. The Canes, to get Staal, traded Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and the eighth overall pick in the draft to the Pens.

?It was unfortunate timing,? Staal said Saturday. ?It worked out for the best, but it was very emotional. We didn?t know when we planned the wedding that it was the day of the draft, and then something like that happens.

?It was a little emotional but still very exciting. Even when you know something might be coming, it?s still a shock. It?s tough to take it all in.?

Staal, who will be an unrestricted free agent after next season, confirmed that he was offered a 10-year contract extension Thursday by the Pens. He said he also realized that if he did agree to the offer, it would end any chance he might have of ever playing with older brother Eric and the Canes.

The two are close and always have been. There?s a third NHL-playing brother, defenseman Marc Staal of the New York Rangers, but Jordan and Eric always appeared to have a closer bond. A fourth brother, Jared, is the youngest of the four and is in the Canes? minor-league system.

Jordan said he and Eric had talked of playing together, noting, ?It was something we would like to do and doesn?t happen often in the NHL.?

Jordan noted that he and Eric did compete for Team Canada in the 2007 World Championship in Moscow.

?It was after my first year in the NHL and he was already a wily veteran,? Staal said, chuckling. ?I played on his line one game. We won the tournament and it was great. It was memorable for us, for our family.?

Now, the Staal brothers will try to win for the Canes. Both have won Stanley Cups ? Eric with Carolina in 2006, Jordan with the Pens in 2009. But while Pittsburgh has been to the playoffs each of Jordan?s six seasons, the Canes have not made it to the postseason since they lost to the Pens in the 2009 Eastern Conference finals.

Jordan said he did not care if he played the wing on Eric?s line or if he continued to play center. After being in the shadow of superstar centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in Pittsburgh, Jordan ? who scored 25 goals this season ? likes the idea of getting the chance to be a bigger offensive contributor for the Canes.

?It?s an opportunity for me to show what I can do offensively,? he said. ?It?s a new challenge for me. I?m excited to get a lot of wins, make the playoffs and see what we can do.?

SmackDown Five-Point Preview: June 22, 2012

Last Sunday at No Way Out, Dolph Ziggler challenged World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus, coming extremely close to capturing the illustrious title. And though he now has three straight loses to The Great White, number four could very well prove to be The Showoff?s lucky number.

Ziggler is, above all else, one of the smartest competitors in WWE. Sure, his motivations are completely self-serving, but that?s the point here. Someone once said, the best way to get to know a Superstar is the face him in the ring. Well, Dolph has taken close note of Sheamus at every pass, and the determined grappler may finally have the perfect plan to triumph over The Great White.

With Vickie Guerrero firmly in his corner after his victory Monday night over Jack Swagger, Ziggler looks to make a huge statement on SmackDown by dropping the Irish Champion ? easier said than done. Standing across the ring from him will be perhaps WWE?s hottest Superstar. Sheamus has done so in the past, but for how long can The Great White hold off such a determined tour-de-force?

Toshiba 50L5200U

The Toshiba L5200U series consists of barebones HDTVs that do a few things very well, but lack many of the basic features found on similarly priced models. Illuminated by edge-mounted LED backlighting, the 49.1-inch 50L5200U we tested produced solid, accurate colors and offered nice wide viewing angles, but contrast ratio was on the low side. At $1,099.99 (direct), it?s relatively affordable for a 50-inch-class HDTV, but for that price, you're not getting any Web connectivity. Overall, there are better deals to be had in this price range.

Design and Features
The 50L5200U sports super-thin (0.6-inch) black bezels that give it a sleek, streamlined look, but it lacks the slice of chrome finish found on its sibling, the 55TL515U ($1,999.99, 3.5 stars). The bottom bezel is slightly wider at 0.8 inches and sports a small Toshiba logo in its center. The right side of the slim, 1.8-inch cabinet holds touch-sensitive Power, Channel Up/Down, Volume Up/Down, Menu, and Input buttons that are a bit too small and too sensitive. The remote is your best bet for tweaking picture settings.

The rear of the cabinet is home to a somewhat stingy selection of I/O ports. Left-facing connectors include three HDMI inputs, stereo analog audio inputs, a PC audio input, analog and digital audio outputs, and a USB port. Component video inputs, a PC (VGA) video input, and a coaxial TV jack face downward. You only get the three HDMI ports with this model (most HDTVs offer four), and unlike the similarly priced Samsung PN51D550C1F ($1,299.99, 3.5 stars), there's no Ethernet port for Internet connectivity or 3D support.

The 40-pound cabinet is supported by a glossy black rectangular stand that is sturdy enough, but doesn't swivel. The two 7-watt down-firing speakers, driven by Audyssey?s Premium Audio Technology, provide better-than-average output and are both loud and full-sounding. Granted, you don?t get the deep booming bass of a dedicated subwoofer but the boost gives the sound some much-needed low end.

The black remote is compact at 6.9 inches and you get 35 buttons plus four navigation keys and an Enter key. None of the smallish buttons are backlit. The bottom of the remote has moderately sharp edges where it meets your hand. They?re not sharp enough to do damage, but they?re not very comfortable either.

Picture settings include they typical brightness, contrast, backlight, tint, color, and sharpness controls, plus color temperature and backlight control. The ClearFrame 120Hz switch helps reduce motion blur and the Film Stabilization feature helps eliminate shaky video, but video purists will want to leave them off. Additional settings include gamma adjustment, picture size, aspect ratio, noise reduction, and Cinema Mode for viewing 24 fps content. There are five preset picture modes including Dynamic, Standard, Movie, PC, and Preference (custom). As is usually the case, Movie mode produced the best all-around picture out of the box.

Performance
We tested the 50L5200U using images from the DisplayMate suite of HDTV diagnostic tests, SpectraCal?s CalMAN 4 software, and a Konica-Minolta CS-200 Chromameter. After a basic darkroom calibration the set produced a peak brightness level of 219.89 cd/m2 and a black level reading of 0.05 cd/m2. The resulting contrast ratio of 4,380:1 pales in comparison to the Editors' Choice Vizio M3D550KD's ($1,429.99, 4 stars) 18,237:1 and the Samsung UN46ES8000F's ($2,999.99, 3.5 stars) 28,640:1, both of which are also LED-lit HDTVs.

Color accuracy was quite good; as noted on the CIE Chromaticity chart below, reds and blues were very close to perfect while greens were slightly off. The slightly heavy green level did not cause any noticeable tinting, and did not interfere with the 50L5200U?s excellent flesh-tone reproduction.

The 50L5200U did a fine job of eliminating motion blur while displaying scenes from the movie 2012 on Blu-ray disc. Image detail was sharp and off-angle viewing was superb for an LED panel. There was some loss of detail in dark scenes but not enough to make the picture look muddy. I did notice some backlight bleed around the corners, however,?which is fairly common with edge-lit HDTVs.

The 50L5200U used only 80 watts of power while being tested, which is good but not as efficient as the 55-inch?LG 55LM6700 ($2,299.99, 4 stars), which has a larger screen and used just 67 watts of power in our tests. There is a sleep timer but that?s all you get in terms of power-saving options.

Conclusion
The Toshiba 50L5200U is an attractive 50-inch HDTV that delivers accurate colors and solid viewing angles, but it doesn?t offer much in the way of features compared with other similarly priced models. If you?re looking for an affordable, full-featured LED-backlit HDTV that has 3D capabilities and comes with four HDMI ports and Internet connectivity, our Editors? Choice for budget HDTVs, the 55-inch Vizio M3D550KD, is the way to go.

World Class Chef Gordon Ramsay chooses to yell at his chef to be work done. Why? You see, Gordon knows the secret, by provoking an emotional response in his chefs, he knows they will remember and/or make necessary changes. It?s the same with marketing and selling.

If you are reading this your probably have heard that we buy with our emotions. Do you know why? And how? Let?s start with the why.

The human brain has three main components:

- the brainstem
- the limbic system and the
- the cerebral cortex.

The cerebral cortex analyzes sensory data, performs memory functions, learns new information and forms thoughts and makes decisions.

The limbic system is responsible for emotions and feelings like anger, passion, and sadness. Information retention and long-term memory are stimulated by the firing of the amygdala, which performs a key role in processing nearly all emotional events. Emotions cause us to pay attention and help use decide which message to remember.

The brainstem is responsible for body functions, which is very important but not for advertising.
Luckily, it is almost impossible to be emotionless. We are emotional beings. When writing or speaking your marketing message, you marketing message must be processed by the limbic system. Emotions tell the reader when to pay attention. Emotions are not only processed faster than logical thought, but also makes the final decision. Your marketing message needs stimulate an emotional reaction.

Now for the how! To stimulate a human emotion, the brain needs to make emotional associations. Your targeted audience needs to hear a marketing message 6 ?9 times to really understand it. More importantly your message need to be heard three times in seven nights sleep to move it from short term memory to long term memory. To get on someone?s mind you need to make an impact.

How do you make an impact? You need to make an emotional impact. You must deliver emotionally charged messages. It doesn?t matter if the words provoke a positive or negative emotion. Take for example, The Great Depression, April 15, taxes, Uncle Sam as examples of words that would provoke a negative emotional response. You can also use numbers. Though you may think numbers would be factual, they are really emotional.

A word of advice. Include a purpose and intention with your message. An intention that your message with touch your perfect customer or client.

Jason Trawick Serenades Britney Spears En Route to X Factor Set

Jason Trawick may have swept Britney Spears off her feet, but there's a reason the man made a career as a talent agent and not the actual talent.

In a short, fun video he posted, Jason serenades The X Factor judge with a few bars of "Sister Christian" while driving her to her San Francisco auditions.

They're quite cute together, and her reaction is great:

"Rode in my 1st @Uber to @TheXFactorUSA auditions in SF today! Jason auditioned for me ... I wouldn't put him through…" the pop star tweeted.

"Not fair! Can I please try my second song choice? I promise to show u I have the X Factor!" Jason Trawick, who proposed last year, pleaded.

That would be REO Speedwagon's "Keep on Loving You" BTW.

He may not have the singing chops, but Jason, who once repped the star he's engaged to, seems like perfect husband material for Britney.

Just don't shoot videos and drive, guys. Against the law.

Who Should 'Own' Social Media at Your Company?

Who Should 'Own' Social Media at Your Company?

.

hands inintermediate

It's a common debate in many businesses. Just who should be responsible for managing my company's social media presence? Sales? Marketing? Customer Service?

Do you want our perspective? How about all of the above? For most companies, social media management is a function of the marketing department, but there is a slew of social applications for your customer service and sales teams, too. Wouldn't your sales team like to know if their assigned leads were asking questions about your products on Twitter? And aren't customers constantly flocking to social media to complain about or seek help with products and services? In fact, according to a study from Booz & Company, 75% of marketers using social media identify customer service as a primary use of their social media platform. That being said, only 26% of respondents in the same study describe customer service as a department responsible for contributing leadership to social media strategies.

Let's be honest. The old adage, "too many cooks ..." needn't apply to social media management. Marketing, Customer Service, and Sales can all have a hand in your business' social presence, and it doesn't have to be a headache. You just have to know how to organize it. So let's discuss how you can create a social media management function that everyone can take part in -- and profit from.

Identify Your Contributors

Let's be clear: just because you shouldn't limit social media management to only one department, doesn't mean you should have a million hands in your accounts. As I emphasized a few sentences ago, you have to know how to organize it, and part of this organization involves designating a few key players. So before you move on, identify who these key players are from each department. Ideally, you'd have one or a few people (depending on the size of your organization) from each department who are responsible for helping to manage your company's social presence.

You should also assign one or two point people from one department to manage your company's overall presence. Because the marketing function of social media requires a lot of content creation/sharing and frequent updating of social accounts, you'll probably want your marketing department to ultimately drive your company's social presence. These social media managers will oversee the day-to-day operation of your social media accounts, as well as implement and carry out any social media marketing promotions. Essentially, these people will field and 'outsource' any sales or customer service/support-related queries that pop up in social media to the designated sales and customer service contributors.

Choose the Right Tools

For social media collaboration to work smoothly, you'll also need to implement the right tools. Otherwise, the "too many cooks ..." adage will start to apply. Luckily, there are plenty of tools available that enable you to manage social media collaboration among multiple contributors. When you're evaluating social media management tools, you'll want to look for tools that give you the ability to do the following:

  • Schedule updates for the future
  • Set up filters to monitor your business and keywords
  • Monitor multiple social networks
  • Support multiple collaborators?
  • Assign specific social media updates to your collaborators for follow-up
  • BONUS: hooks up to your marketing software for closed-loop social integration

HootSuite, for example, is a third-party social media management tool that enables you to do all of the above. It even now integrates with HubSpot's marketing software to give customers the ability to monitor their leads' activities in social media, and better use social media for lead nurturing -- a huge win for Marketing and Sales.

Now let's dive into each of your social media contributors and the roles they should play in social media management.

Marketing's Involvement

As we mentioned, your marketing department is likely to have the most proactive social media involvement, as marketing's main use-cases for social media are promoting marketing content and offers, and engaging fans and followers. Be sure your marketing point person is sufficiently balancing updates about offers, educational content, and content that engages (e.g. questions, visual content, etc.).

It's also Marketing's job to work with other teams' contributors to be sure everyone has the opportunity to share the messages and updates that are important to those teams. For example, the customer team might want to share news of an upcoming webinar specifically meant for customers or announce the launch of a new customer-only email newsletter that customers can opt into receiving. To make this more efficient, have your point people create a sort of social media editorial calendar for the social networks you're participating in. Fill it with the marketing content and offers you plan to promote, leave some open spots for other team's messages, and give them access to the calendar so they can add their desired updates. To make this seamless, set a deadline each week for when submissions need to be made, and then schedule the content on a week by week basis.?

And as the point person/people for your company's social media engagement, your social media manager(s) will also be responsible for monitoring mentions of your company, products/services, and industry terms. Make sure your point person routes questions to the appropriate social media collaborators in Customer Service and Sales as they arise. If you're using HubSpot's HootSuite integration, for example, and the point person notices that a lead in the HubSpot Contacts stream is asking a question about your product pricing, you might assign that update to your sales team collaborator who can either follow up directly or loop in that lead's assigned rep.

Customer Service's Involvement

According to eMarketer, 46% of customers want to solve a problem when they're engaging with a brand on social media, and 39% are looking to give feedback about a product or service. No wonder it makes total sense for customer service to have significant involvement in your business' social media presence. That being said, using social media for customer service communication doesn't go without its challenges. In fact, we've highlighted 7 of these such challenges and how businesses are tackling them in this past blog post. And while there are certainly challenges, that shouldn't deter your customer service team from getting involved. After all, who is better trained and capable of handling a disgruntled customer or answering a nitty gritty product question -- your marketing team, or a customer service rep? Do we even need to answer?

Any customer service reps who are collaborating with your social presence should be at the ready to answer questions or respond to customers that your marketing point people can't appropriately handle on their own. Whether your customer service team is using the same social media accounts, replying via a dedicated "Help" account, or contacting the customer through another method such as email (all are acceptable options, depending on your business), the customer service social collaborator should be following up in a timely manner and providing the most helpful assistance manageable. Furthermore, these contributors should be collaborating with the point person to communicate important customer-related updates that pop up unexpectedly, such as software outages or maintenance.

Sales' Involvement

Let's not forget about Sales, folks. Your sales team is chatting it up with potential customers all the time, and knowing how to use social media to help them be more effective in the sales process can be a very valuable sales tool. And besides just responding to social media assignments from your marketing point people, your sales team should proactively be using social media to prospect as well as prepare for sales calls, follow ups, and nurture their assigned leads.

If social media participation is new to your sales team, train them! Teach them how to locate their leads in social media to conduct some research in preparation for sales calls. Some marketing software, like HubSpot, may even show your sales team their lead's social media account information, if available. Does the lead have accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or another social network or community popular for your industry? Once the sales rep has identified them, have them scan the lead's information and updates on these social media sites. Encourage them to learn about the lead's interests and pain points and strategize about how they can leverage these insights on their sales calls. After they've been in touch, Sales can even use social media as another way to keep in touch with and nurture their prospects by sending leads links to helpful content and looking for opportunities to answer their questions so they stay top of mind.
