Gay rights pioneer Axel Axgil dies at 96 (AP)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ? Axel Axgil, whose struggle for gay rights helped make Denmark the first country to legalize same-sex partnerships, has died. He was 96.

Axgil died in a hospital in Copenhagen on Saturday following complications from a fall, Danish gay rights group LGBT Danmark said.

Axgil, born Axel Lundahl-Madsen, was among the founding members of the organization ? one of the oldest gay rights groups in Europe ? in 1948.

On Oct. 1, 1989, he and his partner Eigil were among 11 couples to exchange vows as Denmark became the first country to allow gays to enter civil unions, with nearly the same rights as heterosexual couples. Eigil Axgil died in 1995.

In the 1950s, both were sentenced on pornography charges to short prison terms for running a gay modeling agency that issued pictures of naked men. The men melded their first names into a new surname, Axgil, and used it in a public show of defiance.

Vivi Jelstrup, a spokeswoman for LGBA Danmark, said Axgil in many ways personified the struggle for gay rights in Denmark.

"But Axel Axgil was a modest man who never cast himself as a lonely warrior," Jelstrup said. "He always underscored that there were many involved in the work and that it was a common cause."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately clear. LGBT Danmark said it planned a memorial service for Axgil at the organization's annual meeting on Nov. 5 in Aarhus, western Denmark.

(AP) ? Clemson and Kansas State tumbled in The Associated Press college football poll after losing for the first time this season, and the top five teams in the rankings held their ground heading into the showdown between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama.

Clemson slipped five spots after losing 31-17 at Georgia Tech and Kansas fell seven spots to No. 17 after getting thumped 58-17 by Oklahoma.

LSU received 47 first-place votes from the media panel, Alabama had 10 and No. 5 Boise State had one.

No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Stanford held on to their spots after victories, while the Broncos were idle.

Georgia Tech's upset pushed the Yellow Jackets back into the rankings at No. 22 and Auburn jumped back in at No. 25.

The losses by Clemson and Kansas State leave six undefeated teams in major college football ? the top five and No. 14 Houston.

The rest of the top had Oregon at No. 6, Oklahoma moving up four spots to No. 7, Arkansas at No. 8 and Nebraska and South Carolina right behind.

Clemson at 11th was followed by Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech.

Michigan is No. 13, its best ranking since Nov. 4, 2007.

Michigan State is No. 15, followed By Penn State, Kansas State, Georgia, Wisconsin and Arizona State.

The final five were Southern California, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Auburn.

The defending national champion Tigers have fallen out of the rankings three times this season, only to work their way back in.

Falling out after losses were two Big 12 teams.

Texas A&M (5-3) was upset at home 38-31 in overtime by Missouri and is unranked for the first time this season.

Texas Tech moved into the rankings last week for the first time this season by beating Oklahoma. The Red Raiders followed that up with a 41-7 loss at home to Iowa State and are unranked again.

Mark Horvath: Creating Movements and Cause Marketing Dreams Can Come True

I was so very honored to be included in Ketchum's Respect the Internet one day conference in New York City. The line up of presenters was unbelievable, and the opening keynote from David Weinberger was different from anything I had heard before and still has me thinking. You can watch the keynote and other panels here. David said "the internet is not the medium, we are the medium", which to me translates to "the internet is still a human experience that just happens online." One of the many reasons I love Jeff Pulver and Chris Brogan so much is because they make the internet human. As marketers (we are all marketers at some level) we must never forget people are human and thus, so is the internet.

Respect the Internet II

Being candid, speaking at this conference had me a little intimidated. So much so that I was actually studying movements every spare moment leaded up to the conference. Normally I speak to a social media crowd, or homeless services, or a leadership, motivational type event. Ketchum is one of the top players in the PR/marketing field and being asked to speak at this level was an amazing honor.

I had never met Marty Cooke or Kristen Engberg before, but we connected right away like we had done this several times. Right away I was impressed by Marty. When we were introduced he started to talk about Invisiblepeople.tv and how much he liked the interviews. I was blown away that he took the time to visit the site and his genuine encouragement meant the world to me. (If you didn't pick up on the huge marketing gold nugget in the last two sentences I thought I would point it out: It's not about YOU) When Kirsten arrived and the three of us started talking, now this was about a 1/2 hour before the panel, we all started to passionately engage in conversation about movements that continued on right through us being being prepped for the stage. Ben Foster, VP Digital Strategy at Ketchum, noticed our chemistry and for the most part just let us go. The end result was one of the best panel experiences at a conference I have ever had. Gosh, I could talk to Marty and Kristen for hours, and hope to someday spend more time with each of them. Please watch and share this video about movements and cause marketing.

Too me, relationships are so vital to any personal and professional success. How you respect the internet is respect people -- always! One huge change our all being connected has caused is that now EVERYTHING MATTERS! Everything should have always mattered, but with social media now more than ever everything matters. To help bring in this point please allow me to share a little history on how I ended up on stage at a Ketchum conference speaking with such amazing people.

A few years back I was in a very serious financial crisis. I was in the process of losing my house to foreclosure and every job seemed to last only a very short time until I was laid off again, and again, and again. I had just started using social media to help with InvisiblePeople.tv , but at the same time I had zero income and life was very scary. I literally was eating $1 pizzas because that was all I could afford. I saw a tweet about Social Media Club LA holding an event at Universal Sheraton for $10 and there was food. Knowing the Universal Sheraton a little I figured it would be a classy event with much better food than Ralph's 10 for $10 cardboard pizzas. Honest, I really went to my first social media event to get better food. I have to say it was an interesting evening, some drama broke out and before I knew it I am connecting with Jessica Gottlieb. Not sure why, maybe Jessica has a fondness to Muppets, but we became friends. Jessica behind the scenes has done so much to support me in the fight against homelessness I will be forever grateful. It was through Jessica that I first connected to Ketchum. Jessica told Nancy Martira about InvisiblePeople.tv and then Alan Danzis. Last year I was visiting New York City and I stopped by to say thanks and bring Nancy and Alan cupcakes. I honestly believe it's so very important to say "thank you" as often as possible. As Ketchum was looking for people to present Alan introduced me to Jonathan Kopp, and the next thing you know I am speaking at Ketchum's event.

During 2009 & spring of 2010 over twenty two people died homeless in Anchorage, Alaska. I desperately wanted to go help our homeless friends tell their story, but I had no idea how I was going to get there. Alan and Nancy connected me to a Ketchum client, Hertz Car Rental. Hertz underwrote my whole trip to Alaska, yet they never asked me for anything in return. When you receive a gift it's only natural to say something good about the giver, so I talk about Hertz often, and General Motors, Delta Hotels, Petro-Canada (Canada) , Murphy Oil (United States), Hanes, TubeMogul, Pitch Engine, and Virgin Mobile Canada, All have helped me fight homelessness and have never asked me for anything, which makes me want to say great things about them even more. The end result is homeless friends like Kim, Mark and Luke helped tell the story of life in the streets of Anchorage. A little news media helped keep the horrible situation in the public's eye. And I was personally changed when Anchorage Police allowed me to ride along while they visited a tent city.

At the time Hertz didn't even have a social media presence, so you may be asking what's in it for them? Well, the immediate return on investment was and still is Hertz employees loved that Hertz was helping me fight homelessness. And the team in Anchorage, who normally may not get much attention, grabbed on to my visit and it was amazing. One thing I did forget to mention in the panel was the positive impact cause marketing has on employees. Recently I was in Pittsburgh doing a branded event with a local GMC dealer. As I was driving in the dealer started to post photos to their Facebook page of employees filling a truck with donations.

When I started InvisiblePeople.tv I had a dream that to change the story of homelessness and get people into housing we would need to partner with new people and reach new stakeholders. Part of that dream was building relationships with major brands that would not only help validate the importance of the need to fight homelessness but would also offer tangible support.

What happened in Pittsburgh is the start of a dream come true. The local GMC dealer, #1 Cochran Automotive, raffled off Pittsburgh Steeler tickets to help fill a truck with donations that went to the Pittsburgh YMCA that operates two men's homes. Here is a video of GMC event and a slideshow, and while the Ketchum conference was still on my mind I taped this interview with the GMC dealer and local YMCA:

I really think the best way to go into any relationship is asking "how can I help you"? The best way to keep those relationships is being truthful in everything you do.

What are your thoughts about brand/cause relationships and creating movements?

(AP) ? Appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 10 percent of its workforce in North America and Europe, as it faces soft demand and higher costs for materials.

The world's biggest appliance maker also on Friday cut its 2011 earnings outlook drastically and reported third-quarter results that missed expectations, hurt by higher costs and a slowdown in emerging markets. Shares fell over 14 percent Friday.

The company, whose brands include Maytag and KitchenAid, has, like other appliance makers, been squeezed by soft U.S. demand since the recession and rising costs for materials such as steel and copper. Due to its size, Whirlpool's performance provides a window on the economy because it indicates whether consumers are comfortable spending on big-ticket items.

Whirlpool has raised prices to combat higher costs, but demand for items like refrigerators and washing machines remains tight. Whirlpool is also facing discount pressure from competitors.

To offset slowing North American sales, Whirlpool has turned to emerging markets. But the company said Friday that sales have slowed there, too. The company revised its demand forecast globally. It now expects demand to decline 3 percent to 5 percent in North America, in 2011, down from a 1 percent to 2 percent prior decline forecast.

It expects flat demand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, from prior expectations of a 1 percent to 2 percent rise in demand.

In Latin America, it now expects demand to be flat to up 5 percent, from prior expectations of a 5 percent to 10 percent increase. And in Asia it expects demand to rise 2 percent to 4 percent from earlier expectations of a 4 percent to 6 percent increase.

Steep costs and the dour global economy are affecting the entire appliance industry. Swedish appliance maker Electrolux said Friday that its third-quarter net income fell 39 percent and also cut its forecast for demand in North American and Europe for the year.

Whirlpool jobs to be cut are mostly in North America and Europe. They include 1,200 salaried positions and the closing of the company's Fort Smith, Ark., plant.

The Fort Smith plant shutdown will affect 884 hourly workers and 90 salaried employees. An additional 800 workers were on layoff from the factory and on a recall list.

Whirlpool will also relocate dishwasher production from Neunkirchen, Germany, to Poland in January 2012.

The company expects the moves will save $400 million by the end of 2013. They'll cost $500 million in restructuring costs however, which will be recorded over the next three years, including a $105 million charge in the fourth quarter, $280 million charge in 2012 and $115 million charge in 2013.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool's third-quarter net income more than doubled to $177 million, or $2.27 per share, from $79 million, or $1.02 per share. Adjusted earnings of $2.35 per share fell short of analyst expectations for $2.73 per share.

Revenue rose 2 percent to $4.63 billion, short of expectations for $4.74 billion.

"Our results were negatively impacted by recessionary demand levels in developed countries, a slowdown in emerging markets and high levels of inflation in material costs," CEO Jeff Fettig said.

Unit shipments fell in all regions except Asia, where they rose 4 percent.

In North America, revenue fell 2 percent to $2.4 billion, and in Latin America, revenue rose 8 percent to $1.2 billion.

The company now expects 2011 net income will be $4.75 to $5.25 per share. Its prior guidance was net income would be at the low end of a range between $7.25 and $8.25 per share.

Separately, Whirlpool has complained to authorities that some companies, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, have been selling appliances at less than fair value in the U.S., a practice known as dumping. Whirlpool said the Commerce Department issued a preliminary determination that the companies are violating international trade laws. The investigation is ongoing.

Whirlpool's stock fell $8.67, or 14.3 percent, to close at $51.80 Friday. The stock has already sunk 42 percent this year.

Military museums offer thrills, noted collections

Military museums allow visitors to experience the rough and tumble jerk of a parachute jump, the barked orders of an Army drill sergeant or the segregated training endured by the first African-Americans to enter the Marine Corps.

Whether you are a hardened military veteran or one who's never worn a uniform, several military museums in the Carolinas offer extensive lessons in military service as the Nov. 11 Veterans Day draws near.

In Fayetteville, N.C., the soaring Airborne and Special Operations Museum attracts between 120,000 to 175,000 visitors every year and tells the story of how America's military developed the strategy of dropping fully-armed soldiers into battle from the skies. A 15-foot sculpture of the paratrooper dubbed "Iron Mike" stands guard at its glass-and-girder front entry, which evokes both the 250-foot "jump towers" that paratroopers use to train and the wingspan of the C-47 aircraft that dropped soldiers onto battlefields in World War II.

Located just minutes off Interstate 95 in downtown Fayetteville, N.C., the museum is holding a weeklong celebration in advance of Veterans Day, says Paul Galloway, executive director of the foundation that supported construction of the $25 million building.

"We'll be hopping and popping. We do a salute to veterans every year," Galloway said. A week of films about the Army and paratroopers will be held the week prior to the holiday, as well as other events to honor military men and women, Galloway said.

As soon as you enter the museum, you spot a World War II-era paratrooper in combat gear floating out of the sky under a yellow 28-foot-wide parachute. Behind him, another model drops from the heavens, a modern Army Ranger buoyed by a light green, honeycombed parachute used by U.S. Special Forces.

A wild ride can be had in the museum's 24-seat platform motion simulator, recreating the bumps and jumps of parachute drops and rides in military vehicles.

To highlight some of the major events of wartime paratroopers, visitors first stroll through a recreated village in Normandy. Recordings from the June 1944 Allied invasion to liberate France from Nazi Germany put visitors in the heat of the battle, with rockets and bullets screeching by. Overhead, a C-47 "Skytrain" aircraft hovers with a U.S. Army paratrooper poised to jump out an open door.

Walkways are papered with still photos, videos and murals that show the history behind U.S. forces that evolved into the famed Special Operations units, designated to take on unconventional warfare and special missions in foreign lands.

Displays from the war in the Pacific, the Korean War and Cold War are shown. In one display, soldiers jump from a UH-1 "Huey" helicopter into a jungle battle raging in Vietnam. Other displays detail the history of U.S. involvement in the Dominican Republic, Panama and Grenada.

America's conflicts in the Middle East are recalled with models of camouflaged soldiers crouching in desert hideouts in Iraq. Others depict U.S. Special Operations forces meeting for tea with Afghan villagers or medical centers where military medics tend to local children.

The latest addition to the Army's military museums is the Army's Basic Training Combat Museum located on Fort Jackson, in Columbia, S.C., which reopened in July after a two-year renovation.

More than 60,000 male and female soldiers graduate every year from basic training at Fort Jackson, which is the Army's largest training site. The museum offers guests and family members a taste of their grueling 10 weeks of indoctrination and combat training.

"The museum boasts a number of high-speed exhibits that zoom in directly on how civilians are turned into soldiers, interwoven with Fort Jackson's past," said the two-star general in charge of the post, Maj. Gen. James Milano.

Visitors may be startled by drill sergeants who appear in holographic images bellowing commands, allowing them to "feel as if he or she has enlisted in the Army and is standing there in their Army Combat Uniform," Milano says.

Check out a fully loaded duffel bag, or try to lift and shoot an Army rifle. Listen as soldiers march by and learn some of the drill sergeants' cadence calls that keep soldiers sharp and in step.

The museum gives visitors a sense of how rough training once was with displays of World War I-era barracks, complete with wood-burning, pot-bellied stoves, metal beds and modest rations.

"I learned how they'd done basic training in the past," said Pvt. Christopher Thorngate, 26, visiting the museum with his grandparents Dale, 76, and Janet, 70, of Salem, W.Va., a day before his own graduation from basic training. "They worked the simulations in very well, so it's not just history and you don't get bored."

Grandfather Thorngate, who retired from the Air Force after 26 years, said he was pleased to learn how present-day training made use of combat weapons and tactics.

"Whether it's the Air Force or Army, it's good to see that they keep instilling military values, the discipline that is needed," he said.

While most Marines recall their basic training taking place either at Parris Island, S.C., or Camp Pendleton, Calif., there is a third site few know about: the Montford Point Marine Museum, located near Camp Lejeune, N.C., at Camp Gilbert H. Johnson.

"We are the Marine Corps basic training site you've never heard of," jokes Finney Greggs, a retired Marine and director of the small museum located in one of the original white wooden, single story barracks buildings where African-Americans were segregated from white Marines as they trained from 1942 to 1949.

The museum holds photos, letters, uniforms and other mementos from blacks who endured tough training to earn the eagle, globe and anchor Corps' insignia and disprove the notion they weren't worthy because of the color of their skin.

African-Americans gained entry to the Marines after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order forcing the commandant to allow them to train. In 1948, President Harry S Truman signed an executive order that desegregated the military services, and all Marines went to boot camp at either Parris Island or Camp Pendleton.

Greggs says the museum is seeking material for displays and is looking for information about any veterans who may have trained at Montford Point and saw duty in World War II. Organizers are also looking ahead to building a second phase dealing with the history of these Marines in the Korean War and Vietnam.

"A lot of families don't even know where their veteran may have served. We tell them, 'Just ask and find out! Maybe some of the older members of your church community were part of World War II and trained at Montford Point," said Greggs' wife, Louise, who helps manage the site. "We'd love to know who they were!"

5 of fall?s most outrageous and actually useful gadgets (Yahoo! News)

Which over-the-top tech will you fall for?

The web's on fire with weird gadgetry. iPod-charging toilet paper holders, martini-mixing robots, and dog poop vaporizers just to name a few. If you can imagine it, it's probably out there.?And this fall brings yet more outlandish tech gizmos and thingamajigs to the Internet. We'll tell you which ones are the craziest of the crop. Dig in and get your wacky on below.

iTree iPhone dock

1. iTree iPhone dock by KMKG Studio
Price: $15,000
Buy it: iTree iPhone dock by KMKG Studio

Ever had the urge to stash your iPhone in a tree? Well, what are you waiting for? For a cool 15 grand, KMKG Studio will cut down and carve you your very own iPhone-charging iTree.

No, it's not pulp fiction; iTree is the real thing, turning any tree of your choice (cherry, poplar, or spruce, for example) into a one-of-a-kind audio art installation. In fact, if you want,?you can even trek into the forest with KMKG's carpenters to hand-pick just the right one.

Once hollowed out and sanded, your fresh-cut iTree is trimmed with phone charging hardware and top-of-the-line?speakers, hold the leaves.?The final product is an acoustically awesome stump of functional art which you might even be tempted to hug.

iTree isn't the greenest or most practical charging choice, nor is it affordable. Still, its cool factor is undeniable.?Got an iPad? There's an iTree for that, too.

ONEDOF Turntable

2. ONEDOF Turntable
Price: $150,000
Buy it: ONEDOF Turntable

The ONEDOF, short for One Degree of Freedom, is more than a few degrees overpriced, but worth every penny. (That isn't a typo. It really costs $150,000!) If you're serious about your vinyl collection, and seriously loaded, this luxury precision turntable just might be music to your audiophile ears.

Gilded, gorgeous, and dreamed up by one very talented NASA aerospace engineer, the slick ONEDOF record spinner is certainly dreamy to look at. And it's even dreamier to listen to. It better be, right?

It's the first turntable in the history of the phonograph to feature a self-centering aluminum alloy platter with non-resonant liquid suspension. Translation: It wipes out virtually all acoustic distortion and makes vinyl records sound amazingly crisp and clear. Everything about this 50-pound musical heavyweight sounds (and looks) incredible to us, including the outrageous price tag.

Star Trek Enterprise baby sppon

3. Star Trek Enterprise Light-Up Feeding System
Price: $24.99
Buy it:?Star Trek Enterprise Light Up Feeding System

Boldly go where no liquified carrot has gone before! Helping your new life form transition to solid food can feel like the final frontier...not to mention a very messy one that you and your wee geekling can traverse together with a little help from Star Trek Enterprise Light-Up Feeding System.

Dinnertime distraction be darned. If you've passed along your love of Star Trek like a good Trekkie, your baby won't be able to resist the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 replica spoon. Gently dock it in your babe's adorable face station and you'll successfully one-up the tired "open sesame" feeding trick.

The set's durable bib stands up to baby drool and flying food debris, but how are its flashy embedded LED flashing lights activated? By engaging the lightweight, dishwasher-safe spoon Enterprise spaceship, of course.

Resistance is futile.?Your oatmeal will be assimilated.

Flashy Dr. Dre headphones

4. Dr. Dre Beats Studio Headphones Swarovski Light Rose Limited Edition by Crystal Rocked

Price: approximately $882.00
Buy it: Dr. Dre Beats Studio Headphones Swarovski Light Rose Limited Edition

It's time once again for Dr. Dre to make his presence felt. Trust us, you've never been on a ride like this before. The West Coat rapper-producer's latest blinged-out Beats Studio headphones rock 43,000 precision-cut Swarovski crystals, and each and every one sparkles in all its pink lemonade-colored glory.

And they're just as fancy on this inside. They bring the noise with high-definition powered amplification and exterior noise cancellation. Fill your ears with the same caliber music The Doc himself demands, and wants you to hear it in. That is, if you're willing to shell out the big bucks. (If not, Dr. Dre's Diddybeats Monster Earbud Headphones should break you off for a lot less paper; they cost about $149 or so.)

Pink's not your color? No worries. These insane headphones come in white, black, and red Swarovski crystals, too. Plug the included 4-foot-long Monster Cable into your iPhone or BlackBerry (or dozens of other audio devices) and sit back, relax, and strap on your seat belt, just like the good Doc says.

Canon's calculator/mouse combo

5. Canon X Mark I Mouse Slim
Price: $59.99
Buy it: Canon X Mark I Mouse Slim

Canon's X Mark I Mouse Slim is a 3-in-1 overachiever with a beautiful identity crisis. It's a wireless mouse, a calculator, and keypad, all rolled into one hot mess. Sure, this featherweight (3.47-ounce) trybrid is innovative, but we can't imagine anyone lusting over one, except for laptop-toting traveling accountants and other professionals who regularly crunch numbers.

Warning: This nifty mouse-u-lator only gets along with laptops and computers tricked out with Bluetooth v2.0 technology, so be sure yours has the goods. The ambitious X Mark I Mouse Slim is available in black or white, and comes with a soft travel pouch.

Outrageous is the new black
What do you think? Would you open your wallet for any of these oddball, overachieving gizmos? We would definitely go for that geekalicious Star Trek bib and spoon duo, and some staffers miss having a discrete number pad when they're using a laptop, so the Canon X Mark I has some appeal.

And none of us can resist iTree... it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.

Once-exonerated convict dies during Conn. appeal (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A Connecticut man whose murder conviction was overturned but later reinstated has died of colon cancer while awaiting a new appeal trial.

Ronald Taylor's lawyer issued a statement Wednesday saying Taylor died Tuesday in Cheshire after a two-year cancer fight.

Taylor and co-defendant George Gould were convicted of killing a New Haven grocery shop owner in 1993 and sentenced to 80 years in prison. Both were freed in April 2010 after a state judge ruled they were victims of "manifest injustice" and declared them "actually innocent." The judge's ruling came after a key witness recanted her trial testimony.

In July, the state Supreme Court reinstated the murder convictions, saying the judge was wrong to overturn them. Gould was sent back to prison; Taylor was allowed to remain out on bail.

Report: Industry decides US food ingredient safety

(AP) ? Thousands of ingredients that go into food have been classified as safe by private industry alone, without any U.S. government oversight, according to a new report published Wednesday.

Since the early 1960's, private companies and industry trade associations have determined at least 3,000 ingredients are safe, with no federal scrutiny, the study found. The ingredients include everything from artificially synthesized chemicals used in chewing gum to grape seed extract used in cheese and instant coffee.

The peer-reviewed report published in the Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety journal draws on research funded by the Pew Health Group, the health and consumer safety arm of the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.

"We don't know the names of a lot of these chemicals because the companies have never told FDA or the public about them," said Erik Olson, Pew Health Group's director of food and consumer safety programs and one of the study's authors. "Often there is not publicly available data on the potential health impacts because FDA has never evaluated them."

The Grocery Manufacturers Association says the industry only classifies ingredients as safe after a battery of rigorous biological tests but agrees that more transparency would help build consumer confidence.

"The system is less transparent than it should be so we're looking to open that dialogue," said Leon Bruner, the association's chief science officer, who agreed the study's estimates were reasonable. "We are completely comfortable with increasing the transparency or the visibility of ingredients that go through the process."

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act makes food manufacturers responsible for ensuring food ingredients are safe. Companies can classify an ingredient as "generally recognized as safe" for use in a specific product but aren't required to tell the Food and Drug Administration about what they find.

Some do, through a voluntary notification program that gives the FDA a chance to review the findings.

Officials have said that if a company markets a food or beverage the agency believes is unsafe, the government can always issue warning letters or seize the product.

FDA Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor said Wednesday the study raised important issues.

"Transparency in decision-making is a high priority for FDA, and FDA considers it timely to explore whether the statutory and regulatory framework for food additives adequately addresses today's need for transparency," Taylor said.

Commerce and Insurance offers Tennesseans storms-related tips ...

?

Weigh damage, read coverage terms and check contractors before hiring?
?
Tennessee Consumer Affairs DivisionNashville, TN ? As temperatures change, storms can result, bringing damage to our homes. The Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) would like to offer consumers some tips for interacting with insurance companies and for selecting contractors.

Storm Damage Tips

  • As soon as possible after an event affects your home, check the damage to see whether you should contact your insurance company to file a claim.
  • If you choose to contact your company, locate a copy of your policy and read through it. Make a thorough inventory for your adjustor of all of the items missing from or damaged in your home.
  • Take pictures, if possible, of all damage ? inside and outside, from several angles ? to get full documentation before any repairs are made.
  • Secure and protect your property against further rain or other damage as much as possible without making permanent repairs, so that the adjustor can see and document the full extent of the damage,
  • Keep receipts for expenses of protecting your property from further damage.
  • Follow the claims-filing procedure set forth in your policy. If there is a dispute, follow the company?s dispute process.
  • Many larger companies have quick-response teams that come into areas of heavy damage to process large numbers of claims as quickly as possible. Others will not send someone out unless you call them. Call your company to be sure.
  • Call TDCI?s Consumer Insurance Services with insurance issues at 800.342.4029, or its Consumer Affairs division hotline for non-insurance issues at 800.342.8385.
  • Tennessee?s Board for Licensing Contractors has found that unscrupulous, unlicensed contractors like to take advantage of homeowners anxious to rebuild after disasters. Be sure to hire only licensed contractors and check them out with the Board. Consumers may verify a license status by calling 800.544.7693, or may check TDCI?s website for various trades at http://verify.tn.gov.

The Department of Commerce and Insurance works to protect consumers while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who do business in Tennessee. www.tn.gov/commerce/

Language: English
52 Min | 576 x 336 | XviD - 801Kbps | 25.000fps | MP3 - 128Kbps | 350 MB
Genre: Documentary

This three-part documentary series looks at how Moshe Dayan, Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon shaped the destiny of Israel, and indeed the entire Middle East. Israel's Generals is a comparison between the three leaders and explores why Israel, proud to be a democracy, continue to choose generals as its political leaders? The program also asks whether there will ever be peace as long as fighters lead the way.
