Amazing Weight-Loss Success Stories That Will Inspire You

Are you feeling discouraged with your diet? ?Fed up with exercising? ?Sometimes dieting and attempting to lose weight can feel like a very lonely game. If you don?t know anyone else who is trying to lose weight, you can feel like you are all alone. Reading stories of other dieters who have been successful can show you that you are not alone and that other people have made their weight-loss goals a reality. You can learn from their mistakes and their successes and be encouraged to continue toward your goals. Here are a few remarkable and inspiring stories that will inspire you on your weight-loss journey.

Manuel Uribe

One of the most amazing weight-loss stories is the incredible tale of Manuel Uribe. He was once the ?World?s Heaviest Man? and, at his peak, his weight reached 1,316 pounds. He had once been unable to leave his bed and his doctors predicted that his weight would severely shorten his life; however, with the help of doctors from the United States, Italy and Mexico, he lost approximately 400 pounds by following the Zone diet. He continued to lose weight and, as of February 2012, his weight was down to 440 pounds. His daily diet consists of consuming 2,000 calories and features egg-white omelets, chicken fajitas, fresh salads, fish fillets and greens. He turned down offers for gastric-bypass surgery in Italy and he drew worldwide attention when he appeared on television in 2006. He was featured on a documentary about his life entitled ?The World?s Heaviest Man.? By simple dieting alone, he was able to lose more than 800 pounds without having to resort to surgery, which is an incredible accomplishment.

David Smith

David Smith?s story is an impressive one. In 2003, his weight had reached a whopping 630 pounds, and that?s when he decided to change his life. He lost a total of 401 pounds by carb-cycling and exercise alone; however, he went through several surgeries to remove the excess skin from his body. He eventually took it one step further and is now a certified personal trainer, helping others to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Rob Cooper

Rob Cooper is known as the Former Fat Guy, as he once weighed 475 pounds; however, he followed a system of natural health ? walking at least 20 minutes per day and eating whole foods ?and lost nearly 300 pounds over two and a half years. After all this, Rob added weight training to his weight-loss regimen and has added 50 pounds of muscle. Rob is now in the best shape of his life and continues to follow a routine of healthy eating and exercise. He is a great example of how, after losing weight, continuing to exercise and work on your body means you can build muscle and create the physique you want.

amber riley Amazing Weight Loss Success Stories That Will Inspire You

Amber Riley

On the set, the wardrobe department has had to take in many of her pants and dresses and revamp her wardrobe for her new slimmer figure.

Losing weight can be a challenging process and you might find yourself discouraged at times. When you do, give yourself a confidence boost by reading inspiring stories of other people who have accomplished weight loss and use it as encouragement.

Gerard Depardieu's latest drama: a Russian passport (+video)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given a Russian passport to the famous French movie star in what some see as part of an escalating war of words between Russia and the West.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / January 3, 2013

In this December 2010 file photo, then-Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (r.) and French actor Gerard Depardieu (l.) attend the Russian Museum, in St. Petersburg. Depardieu, the French actor who has been sparring with his native country over taxes, has been granted Russian citizenship. A brief announcement on the Kremlin website said President Putin signed the citizenship grant on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Vladimir Putin flourished his pen Thursday morning and signed what must be the oddest decree of his long years in power: an order granting a Russian passport to French actor and tax exile Gerard Depardieu.

A terse announcement posted on the Kremlin website?noted that Mr. Putin acted "to satisfy an application for citizenship of the Russian Federation by Gerard Xavier Depardieu, who was born in 1948 in France."

Mr. Depardieu, star of over 170 films and possessing what is often politely referred to as a "colorful" public personality, has been locked in a high profile battle with France's new socialist government over an emergency tax that would levy a 75 percent rate on people earning more than $1.3 million. He recently renounced his French citizenship and took up residence in Belgium, which offers a friendlier tax regime for the super-rich.

France's high court struck down the law last week as "unconstitutional," but the government announced it will soon reintroduce the measure after taking the court's concerns into account.

It's not clear whether Depardieu actually applied for residence in Russia, which has a 13 percent flat income tax for all, but in a far-ranging press conference?last month Putin declared "If G?rard really wants to have a residence permit or a Russian passport, you can consider it done, the issue solved positively."

Putin also said that he has long enjoyed "kind, friendly, personal relations" with the French actor.

Come to Chechnya

Depardieu is no stranger to Russia. He has appeared in several ad campaigns and filmed the 2011 movie Rasputin in St. Petersburg. He is also rumored to be close to Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, and was guest of honor at the pro-Kremlin leader's birthday party in Grozny last October.

Mr. Kadyrov has said that he would happily invite Depardieu to come and live permanently in Chechnya if he wanted to. "If the country's leadership decides in favor of granting Depardieu Russian citizenship, we will be glad to create deserved conditions for the great cultural figure in our republic," Kadyrov said last week.

Russia's blogosphere erupted in derision and sarcastic comment Thursday, with some people writing painfully of their own troubles with Russia's notoriously bureaucratic passport department.

One man posted on Facebook his own tale of trying for years to repatriate his own Russian-born elderly mother from next-door Belarus, but he has so far failed to move Russian authorities because her Belarussian documents show a slightly different spelling of her name than appears on her Russian birth certificate.

Part of spat with West?

Sergei Strokan, a foreign affairs columnist with the liberal Moscow daily Kommersant, says the granting of citizenship to Depardieu should be seen in context with the escalating war of words between Russia and the West. Last month President Barack Obama signed the Magnitsky Act, which aims to punish corrupt Russian officials, and Moscow responded by enacting the Dima Yakovlev Act, whose main feature is a ban on US citizens adopting Russian orphans.

"Russia is very much on the defensive right now. The vindictive nature of Russia's adoption ban has shocked not only the US, but also many in Europe and here in Russia as well," Mr. Strokan says.

"We seem to be entering into a cold war-like battle of images, in which Russia is trying to show that it offers a better life, has higher ideals, and is more friendly to humanity than the West.... ?So this may be seen as a calculated PR move, an effort to demonstrate that we understand and care for the beloved French actor more than his own homeland does," he adds.

"I can't imagine that Depardieu would actually want to live here and experience the life of Russians, though. Let's see how it goes the first time he attempts to travel with that new Russian passport."

Capital Business ? Tablet sales forecast leaps again

Apple CEO/FILE

Apple CEO/FILE

WASHINGTON, Jan 24 ? Global tablet computer sales are expected to hit 145 million this year, a research firm said Wednesday in the latest upgrade of the sizzling segment.

ABI Research said it raised its forecast due to ?a combination of new market entrants, more affordable choices for consumers, and increased adoption by business audiences.?

?The rate of innovation is slowing as tablet vendors augment their product portfolios to meet the needs of market audiences,? says ABI?s Jeff Orr.

?The late 2012 launches of Apple?s iPad mini and a variety of slates based on Intel architecture and new Windows operating systems will only begin to show their progress this year.?

ABI said North America will account for just over 50 percent of worldwide sales.

Business sales are expected to account for 19 percent of the total, as corporate customers look to newer models aimed at their users.

Sales data from 2012 are still being compiled, but some forecasts indicated the total number of tablets sold would be around 126 million.

Facebook Management Decides To Nuke ... - Business Insider

Less than a day after Twitter launched Vine, Facebook has cut off the video-sharing application?s ?find people? button, which allowed members to connect to their Facebook friends.

Twitter users trying to use the feature are greeted with an error message saying that Vine is not authorised to make the Facebook request.

Twitter and Facebook have so far made no comment on the development, the latest in a series of apparent hostilities between the microblogging site and the social networking giant.

At the end of last year Instagram, the Facebook-owned photo sharing app, disabled the feature that allowed Twitter to properly display its photos, in a sign of growing tensions between the two platforms.

This meant that Twitter users were forced to click through to the Instagram site if they wanted to see photos in their entirety.

Instagram used to work closely with Twitter but the relationship worsened after Facebook bought the app in a $1bn deal last April.

It then emerged that Twitter had earlier made a failed $525m bid to buy Instagram. Suggestions that Twitter had ?verbally agreed? a deal to buy the app only intensified hostilities with Facebook.

At the end of last year Twitter released Instagram-style photo filters for its own app.

Social networks are growing increasingly protective of their platforms as competition rises for users and for advertising revenue.

Last year, Twitter tightened its rules on what third-party applications are able to do, a move that seen as an attempt to keep users on its platform.

Facebook also proposed changes to its data-sharing rules that would allow the social network to use data collected by Instagram to "tell us information about you" and "improve the quality of ads."

The change allows Facebook, which has more than a billion registered users, to build more complete profiles of its users - and target advertisements - using people's personal data from its social network and from Instagram.

Pat Henry's guide to safe detoxing - Health & Beauty, Lifestyle ...

NOW is the time to assess and consider detoxing. Over the Christmas the average person would probably eat a massive amount of calories per day, including more high calorie foods and increased amounts of alcohol and soft drinks.

We are consuming between 6,000 and 8,000 calories per day -- that's 4,000 over what we would normally eat. And as 3,500 calories equals one pound of fat, you see how easy it is to gain 7lb in one week.

Most of the weight gain will be an accumulation of waste and junk food clogging up the system, with the average person being five meals behind in elimination causing bloatedness, swelling of the tummy area, facial bloatedness and puffy hands.

Creamy

Our 30ft of intestines can become backed up with food that has not been eliminated, resulting in constipation. If your system is working properly, you should be going to the bathroom a half hour after you rise in the morning and at lunch time again anywhere between one and two hours after your meal.

When you are eating, the enzymes in your saliva starts breaking down the food even before your tummy starts the real process of digestion. Hydrochloric acid is what breaks down the majority of food, but if you have any liquid with meals it slows down the process so try and avoid drinking with meals: it's OK after half an hour but give your body a chance to do its job.

Let's imagine you are having a prawn and avocado starter with wine, turkey and ham and all the vegetables and gravy for main course, add more wine, then your creamy trifle with tea, put all these foods into a blender and whisk.

This is what happens when you eat: your food, the intestines become overloaded, the tummy extends, your body is trying to cope with the avalanche of a mixture of drink and food and if you drink beer with your food it makes it even worse, with the yeast effect bloating your tummy even more. To avoid all this, eat food slowly, give each course a break and don't overload your body.

So now you want to detox, it's a great buzzword at the moment with so-called detox products being sold. To detox properly, take a sensible approach. Don't try a long detox regime if you are not used to it. If you do, you may feel unwell. To remove waste, your system has to have a period of adjustment, so over the next four weeks we will take you, step by step in a safe manner. through the proper way to get healthy by detoxing.

Exhilarating

I remember the great pioneers of fasting, such as Paul Bragg, Arnold Ehret, and Bernarr Macfadden. They were my heroes of detoxing. Reading their books years ago, I wanted to feel the exhilarating effects of cleansing. Only now is the medical profession accepting the benefits of fasting.

My first attempt was seven days on pears followed by seven days on water. Then eventually three months on pears and 21 days on distilled water. With a large 'NO!', I am not recommending this to you. Looking back, it was too extreme but it did feel fantastic. And, yes, I was working at a very strenuous job.

The idea was to clear the body of mucus and waste to get closer to meditation. But now with such hectic lives I think

to start off for the first week try two days of cleansing. Let's say Tuesday and Thursday.

The most effective way is to have your normal breakfast and from then on only pears or grapes and good water, non sparkling and not tap water, until the next morning.

Then eat your normal food slowly. Don't shovel food into the body. The reason for pears and grapes is that they are the best cleansing foods. Don't use acidic foods, such as oranges or grapefruit, as they will make you feel queasy as they are too acidic and bitter.

Withdrawal

Try to use soft pears or sweet grapes. If pears are too hard they don't digest properly. Two days in the first week is enough; very slowly letting your body re-adjust to the cleansing effect and no, you won't be going to the bathroom all day long, that doesn't happen.

Sometimes during cleansing your body you might get withdrawal symptoms from coffee and junk food.

If this happens, don't worry. If you must have some black tea or coffee go ahead. After one day on and a day off food, you will feel the bloatedness decreasing and your tummy will revert back to normal. Your gut is like a small balloon the size of your fist, if you overload the balloon, it just gets bigger, pushing the tummy forward.

Do not detox:

1. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

2. If you suffer from a serious illness

3. If you are having major surgery

4. If you are seriously under or overweight or suffer from eating disorders

Before detoxing:

1. Visit your GP for a full medical

2. Listen to your body as it will never lie to you, there's nothing to be gained from being stubborn or foolish

3. Get proper advice from an experienced health and fitness expert before you embark on your first detox as they will let you know what to expect

UAE ratifies IRENA headquarters, cements position as renewable energy hub

Monday, Jan 14, 2013

The UAE today announced the formal ratification of its headquarters agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), confirming IRENA?s position as the global hub for renewable energy, and the first international organisation headquartered in the Middle East.

?What began as a visionary idea in 2009 has truly taken form. The renewable energy era is upon us.?

The announcement was made during the first day of the annual IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of ministers and officials from 150 countries. It formally accords IRENA all the rights, privileges and protections of an international organisation.

The agreement also highlights the UAE?s emergence as a global centre of excellence for renewable energy. Abu Dhabi is home to Masdar, the renewable energy city, and this week is hosting thousands of industry leaders and policy makers for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

?I want to thank the UAE?s leadership for their support of IRENA?s HQ ratification, which represents a major milestone for the future of the Agency,? said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE?s Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change and CEO of Masdar. ?The UAE now has its first fully fledged international organization ? reflecting and enhancing our position as a global hub for the energy industry.?

?The ratification of our headquarters agreement, and the presence of a record breaking number of ministers and policy makers at the 2013 Assembly, marks IRENA?s coming of age,? said Adnan Amin, IRENA Director General. ?What began as a visionary idea in 2009 has truly taken form. The renewable energy era is upon us.?

A disconnect between violence and television

(AP Photo/FX, Prashant Gupta, File)

(AP) ? If there's any soul-searching among top television executives about onscreen violence contributing to real-life tragedies like the Connecticut school shooting, it isn't readily apparent.

All say the horrors of Newtown and Aurora, Colo., rocked them. But during a series of meetings with reporters here over the last 10 days, none offered concrete examples of how it is changing what they put on the air, or if that is necessary.

"I'm not a psychologist, so I'm not sure you can make the leap (that) a show about serial killers has caused the sort of problems with violence in our country," said Robert Greenblatt, who put "Dexter" on the air when he ran Showtime and is now overseeing development of a series on the notorious creep Hannibal Lecter for NBC. "There are many, many other factors, from mental illness to guns."

All of those points are being considered by Vice President Joe Biden as he prepares to make recommendations Tuesday to President Obama on ways to curb violence. When entertainment executives met with Biden in Washington on Friday, makers of blood-spurting video games like "Call of Duty" and "Mortal Kombat" dominated attention. In theaters, "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" dominated box office receipts during its first week.

Television's biggest influence is its omnipresence; the average American watches more than four hours of TV a day.

In recent days, only FX President John Landgraf said he was in favor of further study about any correlation between entertainment and real violence. Previous studies have been mixed.

Landgraf has sons aged 15, 12 and 9 and said he doesn't let them play video games in which the player is shooting.

Everything the entertainment industry does should be fair game in a discussion about violence, he said. But he pointed out that the zombie series "Walking Dead" and brutally violent "Sons of Anarchy" are both very popular in England and that country has far fewer gun murders than the United States. The availability of powerful assault weapons and ammunition are most responsible for the difference, he said.

The Newtown shooting was heartbreaking, said Paul Lee, ABC entertainment president. "We welcome the conversation as to how we as a culture can make sure that we don't let these events happen again," he said.

He said ABC has strong standards for what it broadcasts, stronger than its competitors.

"We talk about it all the time," he said. "We are storytellers. We have to tell stories that are vibrant and passionate, but we want to make sure that the stories that we tell are done with integrity, you know, there's no gratuitous action that goes out there, that it's driven through the stories and the characters, and that we have a moral compass in what we do."

The appetite for "Walking Dead" and "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" among young viewers is not lost on any TV executive, and bottom line pressure speaks most loudly to them. Broadcast networks feel a particular need to push the envelope when they see cable programs making noise with an ability to show more explicit scenes.

The same week that Lee talked about ABC's standards, the network's hit "Scandal" had a scene depicting waterboarding.

Fox has a highly anticipated series due later this month, "The Following," about a serial killer who recruits deadly disciples, and its gruesome scenes include a woman who commits suicide by gouging her eye and piercing her skull with an ice pick, and a man set on fire at a coffee stand.

Kevin Reilly, Fox entertainment chairman, said that given all of the media choices, the impact on real life is a broad and complex conversation. "It trivializes it to try and link it to television, or broadcast television in particular," he said.

"Part of entertainment, part of what we do on television, is to provide escapism," Reilly said. "Escapism comes in many forms. It could be laughter. It could be fantasy. It is also your worst nightmare come to life. And it makes our palms sweat and it moves us emotionally and puts us on the edge of the seat. We are engrossed in it and we forget ourselves for an hour."

When a network is putting a thriller on the air, it has to be able to compete on an intensity level, he said.

Being publicly questioned about the level of violence on the air clearly annoyed Reilly, however. Asked if Fox had made any changes to the promotion or content of "The Following" after the Newtown school shooting last month, he snapped, "No," and said he wouldn't address any more questions on the topic.

He was wrong, by the way: Fox later said it had replaced a billboard showing a woman with an ice pick with an image of series star Kevin Bacon, and combed its on-air promos to make sure there was no gunplay.

Reilly wasn't alone in his impatience. CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler also called a halt to questions on the topic Saturday after being asked several. Tassler was unhappy with NBC's Greenblatt, who said that CBS' "Criminal Minds" was worse than "Dexter" ever was in terms of content. She said it was a mistake to allow the discussion "devolve into my show versus your show."

CBS is on pace to be the nation's most-watched television network for the 10th time in 11 years, and has done so with a huge fictional body count. The network's prime-time schedule is dominated by procedurals that usually involve solving violent crimes. Tassler said CBS would begin promoting on the Super Bowl a summer series based on a Stephen King book about a town trapped under an invisible dome, the promo clip shown to reporters included drawings of body parts dropping from the sky, a pacemaker bursting out of a man's chest and a bloody hammer being cleaned in a sink.

NBC illustrated a similar disconnect. As its executives said NBC wasn't a "shoot 'em up" network, a highlight reel of "Revolution" was shown that that included a swordfight, a standoff between two men with guns, a gunfight and a building blown up with a body flying through the air.

Tassler said CBS will show "awareness and sensitivity" as it moves the process of making pilots and selecting series that will run on the network in coming years.

"Nothing that is on the air is inappropriate," she said. "And our attention is always to continue to be a broadcaster that creates content for a vast, diverse audience."

Early surgical menopause linked to declines in memory and thinking skills

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Women who undergo surgical menopause at an earlier age may have an increased risk of decline in memory and thinking skills, according to a study released January 14 that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 65th Annual Meeting in San Diego, March 16 to 23, 2013. Early surgical menopause is the removal of both ovaries before natural menopause and often accompanies a hysterectomy.

"While we found a link between surgical menopause and thinking and memory decline, women on longer hormone replacement therapies had slower declines," said study author Riley Bove, MD, with Harvard Medical School in Boston and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. "Since hormone replacement therapy is widely available, our research raises questions as to whether these therapies have a protective effect against cognitive decline and whether women who experience early surgical menopause should be taking hormone replacement therapies afterward."

The study included 1,837 women between the ages of 53 and 100 participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Of those, 33 percent had undergone surgical menopause. The women were given several types of tests that measured thinking skills and memory. Researchers also recorded age at the start of menstruation, years of menstrual cycles and use and length of hormone replacement therapies.

The study found that among women who underwent surgical menopause, earlier age of the procedure was associated with a faster decline in long-term memory related to concepts and ideas, in memory that relates to time and places and in overall thinking abilities. The results stayed the same after considering factors such as age, education and smoking. This same association was not seen in women who underwent natural menopause.

There was also a significant association between age at surgical menopause and the plaques linked to Alzheimer's disease.

"Our study warrants further research as the interest in this subject will continue to grow right along with our aging population," said Bove.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Wind farm contracts to increase energy bills for families

Heathrow Airport could face severe disruption, with forecasters warning there could be up to 5cm of snow in some parts of the country.

Energy bills have more than doubled since 2004 to more than ?1,300 a year per household, largely due to rising gas prices.

Bills are set to go up by hundreds of pounds a year under all the Government?s green and fuel poverty policies.

Following the MPs damning report into the wind farm contracts, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has now said it will ?re-examine some of the terms? of the lucrative deals.

The sharp criticism of the Government came in a report on the ?elaborate? new system that licences companies to operate assets bringing wind-generated power onshore.

Energy ministers want controversial offshore wind farms to provide up to 15 per cent of the country?s electricity needs by 2020.

That will require around ?8 billion of investment in infrastructure such as platforms, cables and substations.

The committee said that long-term licences awarded to energy companies so far ?appear heavily skewed towards attracting investors rather than securing a good deal for consumers?.

Under the terms of the contracts the companies are guaranteed an RPI inflation linked income for 20 years regardless of how much the infrastructure is used.

The estimated returns of 10-11 per cent on the initial licences ?look extremely generous given the limited risks?, the MPs said.

Ministers stand accused of failing to learn lessons from failed Private Finance Initiatives, with the committee warning that costs from the wind farm schemes will now be passed on to taxpayers.

Mrs Hodge, the MP for Barking, described the way the contracts had been awarded as ?shocking?.

?[The energy companies] are guaranteed income even if we don?t use the electricity and if the transmission cables fail they can only get fined up to 10 per cent of the total income coming in,? she said.

?It?s like another PFI. If you create such generous terms people would be mad not to get involved in the market.?

The contracts were awarded to the energy firms in March 2011 but the policy was decided by the last Labour Government, the committee confirmed.

?Not only is it unlikely that this new licensing system for bringing electricity from offshore wind farms onto the national grid will deliver any savings for consumers, it could well lead to higher prices,? Mrs Hodge added.

?Indeed the terms of the transmission licences appear to have been designed almost entirely to attract investors at the expense of securing a good deal for consumers.

?Licensees and their investors are provided with a guaranteed income, increasing annually in line with RPI, for 20 years regardless of the extent to which the assets are used.

?Future payments to licensees are estimated at around ?17 billion, and this will ultimately be funded by customers who could well end up paying higher electricity prices.?

The Labour MP said DECC and the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority had wanted to create a ?competitive market? for offshore transmission, but the first six licences were awarded to just two firms - Transmission Capital Partners and Macquarie.

?In setting up this new market the Department and Authority ignored vital lessons from previous government experience of PFI, such as the need to share refinancing gains, and it is shocking that the Treasury allowed it to proceed,? the Labour MP said.

Christopher Heaton-Harris, the Conservative MP for Daventry, warned that consumers could be left paying for ?redundant? wind farm technology because of the deals.

?This is going to be a sizable chunk of money in the future on top of our bills,? Mr Heaton-Harris said.

?There is every chance that in 15 years you could be seeing huge numbers of redundant offshore wind farms that we will still be paying for.?

A DECC spokesman insisted that the contracts had been designed to ?drive value for money? for consumers.

?The offshore electricity transmission regime harnesses competitive forces to drive value for money for consumers,? the spokesman said. ?Potential licence holders bid against each other on price in the context of the licence terms.

"With six licences now granted, now is the right time to re-examine some of the terms. We therefore welcome Ofgem's current consultation on them.?

The disclosure that consumers? energy bills could increase came as a poll showed that the majority of MPs do not trust energy companies to offer genuine competition and provide customers with choices so they can choose between suppliers.

The survey of 92 MPs by pollsters Ipsos MORI found that 86 per cent distrust the companies to ?provide clear information so customers can choose between suppliers?.

Of the surveyed MPs, just 10 per cent said they believe energy companies will try to offer ?genuine competition? in energy supply.

Wisconsin lawmakers to avoid late-night debates

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Wisconsin lawmakers have a bipartisan deal to avoid all-night debates in the state Assembly.

Party leaders announced the agreement Thursday. The deal hinges on Republican and Democratic leaders agreeing each day on how much time they will spend on each measure.

As a test of the new procedure, both sides have agreed to limit the day's debate to no more than five hours.

Going past midnight happens elsewhere, especially at the end of sessions or as other deadlines loom. But the Wisconsin Assembly in recent years has routinely pushed debates and votes on contentious bills into the wee hours, when only lobbyists and the cleaning crew are left in the building.

Republican Speaker Robin Vos says both sides want to eliminate all-night sessions, saying they're not in the public interest.

Partial victory for Bolivia in coca fight

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) ? Evo Morales' global crusade to decriminalize the coca leaf, launched in 2006 after the coca growers' union leader was first elected president of Bolivia, has finally attained a partial, if largely, symbolic victory.

A year ago, Bolivia temporarily withdrew from the 1961 U.N. convention on narcotic drugs because it classifies coca leaf, the raw material of cocaine, as an illicit drug.

It has now rejoined, with one important caveat: The centuries-old Andean practice of chewing or otherwise ingesting coca leaves, a mild stimulant in its natural form, will now be universally recognized as legal within Bolivia.

To press for coca's decriminalization, Bolivia's first indigenous president has chewed it at international forums, bestowed coca-leaf art on such figures as former U.S. Secretary of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and promoted the leaf as a "nutritional" ingredient fit for school lunches.

Bolivia's condition for rejoining the convention met resistance from 15 countries, including the United States and the rest of the G8 group of industrial nations, according to U.N. spokeswoman Arancha Hinojal. But the objections received by the United Nations ahead of Thursday's midnight deadline fell far short.

In order to block Bolivia's return to the convention a full third of its signatories ? or 63 ? needed to object.

Among nations objecting were Germany, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, Britain, Japan, The Netherlands and Portugal. Notably, neither Peru nor Colombia, the world's two other cocaine-producing nations, filed objections. Nor did any other South American nation.

The White House has, since 2008, maintained that Bolivia has failed to meet its international counternarcotics obligations.

"We oppose Bolivia's reservation and continue to believe it will lead to a greater supply of cocaine and increased cocaine trafficking and related crime," said a senior U.S. State Department official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name.

"While we recognize Bolivia's capacity and willingness to undertake some successful counternarcotics activities, especially in terms of coca eradication, we estimate that much of the coca legally grown in Bolivia is sold to drug traffickers, leading to the conclusion that social control of coca (allowing some legal growing) is not achieving the desired results," the official said in a statement.

Morales had long sought to remove language from the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which obliges its signatories to ban the chewing of coca leaves, and temporarily withdrew from it on Jan. 1, 2012.

Morales' government said a celebration was planned for Monday with coca farmers.

"It's a great achievement but much remains to be done," said Rolando Vargas, a coca growers' leader in Cochabamba who belongs to Morales' union.

Coca leaves and coca tea, which fight hunger and alleviate altitude sickness, are widely available in Peru and Colombia and the highlands of northern Argentina. The coca leaf also has deep religious and social value in the Andean region.

Its non-narcotic extract has also been used to flavor the soft drink Coca-Cola.

Bolivia has the world's third-largest coca crop, by U.N. estimate, with 31,000 hectares (120 square miles) under cultivation. More than a third of that crop is legal.

Morales expelled the U.S. ambassador and U.S. counterdrug agents in 2008, accusing them of inciting the opposition.

Washington denies the accusations. Both countries have been working, so far with limited success, to restore relations at the ambassadorial level.

The text of Bolivia's reservation says it "reserves the right to allow in its territory: traditional coca leaf chewing; the consumption and use of the coca leaf in its natural state for cultural and medicinal purposes; its use in infusions; and also the cultivation, trade and possession of the coca leaf to the extent necessary for these licit purposes."

You will miss many opportunities to develop personally if you put off making decisions. Even if you don?t have all the information you would like, don?t be scared to make decisions. Decisions that succeed create good instincts. Even decisions with less favorable outcomes are useful because they allow the decision-maker to learn from the mistake. You?ll make a better decision next time.

TIP! When you start missing your self-made goals and guidelines, that?s a sign that you need to take a moment to figure out what the problem is. Find out how others have succeeded at the same thing.

Try challenging yourself as much as possible. You can always open up new possibilities for yourself. Learning about something new, along with the acquisition of new skills could easily be gained. You may even set an example for others to follow in the future. Unique challenges can help to yield more satisfaction down the road.

Increasing the good in your life is often a matter of willpower, meaning that what you wish on others can also be wrought upon yourself. You should only be positive in your wishes for others. Negative feelings will be less burdensome and less depressing if you make it a practice to maintain a positive mood.

To be the best person you can be, you need to treat your body well. When you body is letting you know that you need food or a drink, you need to listen! Doing so will enable your body to function efficiently down the road. If you choose to ignore it, however, it may choose to ignore you at some point.

TIP! Sexual capitol is a relatively new concept that you should place a priority on developing. It does not refer to using sexuality in a manipulative way.

When working on a project, work with your own skills and abilities. Your skill set is unique to you, and the diversity of skills from one person to the next is what makes this world so great. Don?t waste time on what you are not good at, but rather keep your focus on the skills you have and use them wisely.

Do some reading on personal development. A good personal development book can give you great advice and ideas that can change your life. It is always best to check the reviews for a book. Personal development books can be very poorly written.

TIP! Do you feel like you drink too much alcohol? Think about your other harmful habits, like smoking cigarettes. Your body should be treated with the respect it deserves.

Conquer clutter and disorganization in all aspects of your life. You will feel accomplished and your mind will feel clearer. Additionally, it will remove the stress caused by living a disorganized life. Having everything in its own place instills a calming energy.

Remember to treat people with respect regardless of how much power they have, or what they can do for you. How you treat them reveals more about your own character, than it reveals about theirs.

You can see that self improvement and growth is important to your sense of well being. You will be the most successful in achieving your personal development goals when you focus on the techniques that work for your needs. Take the advice you got in this article, and you will already have a head-start on making the most out of your self improvement journey.

HEL or HELOC - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum

Looking to make an addition to the house (convert screen porch to sunroom and open up wall), about 20K, I'll probably pay 10K in cash and finance the rest. Any advice on whether to get a home equity loan, or a home equity line of credit? Any pros/cons to one or the other?? Thanks for any advice.

Also, as far as general contractors, we got 3 bids, all within 1K of each other. 1 large company, 1 mid size, and 1 self employed/businer owner contractor. Any recommendations on which to go with? I have my preference, but any real world experience advice would be welcome.

You May Not Recognize Yourself in 10 Years

Think you'll be the same person in 10 years that you are today? Think again. Most people realize they've changed in the past, but few expect to change in the future, a new study finds.

Instead, while acknowledging that their tastes, values and even personality have varied over the past decade, people tend to insist the person they are today is the person they will be in 10 years ? a belief belied by the evidence, said study researcher Daniel Gilbert, a psychologist at Harvard University.

"It's not that we don't realize change happens, because we all admit at every age that a lot of change has happened to us in the last 10 years," Gilbert told LiveScience. "All of us seem to have this sense that development is a process that has delivered us to this point and now we're done."

Permanent personality

In a new study published this week (Jan. 4) in the journal Science, Gilbert and his colleagues dub this mistaken belief the "end of history" illusion. No matter what age, Gilbert said, people act as if history shaped them and ended, leaving them in their final form. [7 Ways the Mind & Body Change With Age]

The illusion emerged when the researchers recruited participants online to fill out various personality, preference and value surveys as themselves 10 years prior and as themselves 10 years in the future. Over the series of studies, more than 19,000 people participated.

In each case, the researchers compared the look-ahead answers of 18-year-olds with the look-back answers of 28-year-olds, and so forth (comparing 19-year-olds with 29-year-olds, and 20-year-olds with 30-year-olds) all the way up to age 68. The older ages always reported changing in the past decade, but the younger ages did not expect to change nearly as much in the future as their elders' experiences suggested they would.

"When a 40-year-old looks backward, they say, 'I've changed a lot in terms of my personality, in terms of my values, in terms of my preferences,'" Gilbert said. "But when 30-year-olds look forward, they say, 'I don't expect to change a lot on any of those dimensions.'"

To make sure the results weren't a consequence of people overestimating their past change rather than underestimating their future change, the researchers analyzed the actual personality change of 3,808 people who filled out personality questionnaires in 1995-96 and then again in 2004-05. Sure enough, the measures of actual change in this group were nearly identical to the reports of change among the current study participants. In other words, people are good at gauging how much they've changed in the past. It's the future that gives them trouble.

The "end of history" illusion may be driven by two factors, Gilbert said. One is that people find it comforting to believe that they know themselves and that the future is predictable. Thus, people are motivated to see the present as permanent.

The other is that it's simply harder to imagine the future than to remember the past. People may struggle to imagine how they might change and mistakenly conclude that since they can't figure it out, they won't change at all, Gilbert said.

Consequences of changing

This misjudgment can have real-world consequences, Gilbert said. For one thing, people make a number of life choices, from marriages to careers, assuming that decades from now they'll like the same people and activities they do today. The researchers even demonstrated some of these consequences by asking 170 people, ranging in age from 18 to 64, how much they'd pay today to see their favorite band perform in 10 years. They also asked how much the people would be willing to pay to see their favorite band of 10 years ago perform this week. [7 Personality Traits That Are Bad For You]

People were willing to shell out $130 to see their current favorite band in a decade. But they wanted to part with only $80 to see their former favorite band play now. The gap suggests people are overestimating how similar their future preferences will be to their current ones, Gilbert said.

Psychologists actually know quite a bit about how personality and values change over a lifetime, Gilbert added. For example, people tend to become less open to new experience over time but more conscientious, he said. And the older you are, the less you're likely to change in the future ? though you'll still probably change more than you expect, this study suggests.

"If we know that our preferences are likely to be less stable than they feel, we can take great care when we make decisions. We can build in a margin for escape? ?? so, for example, if I am going to buy a ticket to see a concert in 10 years, I ought to buy a refundable ticket," Gilbert said.

But before you write a 10-year opt-out clause into your wedding vows, take heed: Gilbert's other research has found that when people feel they have the ability to change their minds, they're less happy with the choices they've made. People who make irrevocable choices tend to be happier with them than those who can flip-flop later, Gilbert said.

"The best of all possible worlds would be a world in which you're allowed to change your mind but you don't know it," he said.

Top 7 Tips to Becoming a Financially Free Millionaire | Stock ...

wealth creation tips

Having been in the company of several self-made millionaires over the years in my travels, I have been fortunate enough to gain some insight into how they were able to reach a point of being financial free.

Here is a collective summary of their top 7 golden nuggets of wisdom:

1. Become a lifelong learner. Invest in your education throughout your life. Focus on taking courses or buying programs that show you the ?how to? steps and processes as opposed to primarily theory or general concepts.

2. Master a financially valued skill that our North American society is willing to pay you well for. Pursue a passion that can generate consistent financial rewards for you down the road. Strive to be good at what you do. This will also build your confidence over time.

3. Early on establish the work ethic of arriving early, working harder than your colleagues, working smarter and letting decision-makers know. Many of the self-made millionaires I?ve talked to worked 50 to 60 hours per week for several years before reaching a point of being financially free.

4. Live modestly. I?ve been told that the cost of your house determines the cost of your lifestyle and thus impacts on your ability to create wealth. By living within your means and being moderate in your spending you increase your chances of reaching a point of being financially free.

5. Be extraordinary in your saving. Keep reminding yourself that when you buy a depreciating asset such as a car, TV, or camper you are becoming poorer. Get into the habit of paying yourself first rather than budget and pay others first. With your savings either invest in your on-going education, a systematized business that you are creating or in investment vehicles such as stocks and real estate.

6. Keep track of your money. Get into the habit of monitoring your cash flow. As well, on a quarterly basis calculate your net worth. In doing so, you are able to see what the fruits of your labor have produced thereby motivating you to keep up the great work.

7. Have multiple streams of income; one of which you are able to do extremely well. Learn to quickly convert your earned active income into passive income by investing in the stock market, rental real estate or systematized businesses where your presence is not necessary in order for you to make money.

Focus your attention on investing in opportunities that generate cash flow. With cash flowing into your bank account from multiple sources every month you will reach a point of being financially free as soon as your monthly expenses are covered by your passive income streams.

The most important lesson that I have taken away from all of this advice is to believe in yourself and your capabilities. Have the resolve to strive to make a difference in the lives of others and your life will be richly blessed in return.

As a parting thought, all of the self-made millionaires that I have had the privilege of chatting with have re-iterated the same words of advice: ?Find a financially valued skill that you are passionate about and then pursue that passion with enthusiasm and purpose.?

California newspaper defies trend to shrink costs

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ? A major Southern California newspaper is defying conventional wisdom by spending heavily to expand in print.

The Orange County Register is adding about 100 journalists and expects the paper will soon be 40 percent larger than it was under previous owners. Thicker pages with triple the number of colors will produce crisp photos and graphics.

The Register introduced or expanded sections for business, automotive and food coverage. High school sports, community news and investigative reporting are getting more attention. Even color comics are back.

Aaron Kushner leads an investment group that bought the 107-year-old Register and parent company, Freedom Communications Inc., in July. The 39-year-old, first-time newspaper owner says readers will pay for high-quality news.

A big test comes when the Register begins charging for access to its website.

6 Ways to Recharge Your Business in 2013

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

For the entrepreneur, this time of year typically means a mad dash to wrap-up remaining projects, close deals, and squeeze in time for family and friends. As the days get shorter, it starts to feel like time accelerates faster than ever -- leaving you less and less time to accomplish your year-end goals.

However, amidst the holiday chaos, it is possible to stay grounded and set the foundation for a successful year to come. Here are six ways to help you recharge your business in the New Year.

1. Get your priorities in line: Time management is a year-round challenge for business owners, but schedules get even tighter during the holidays. That?s why it?s more important than ever to know your priorities. Set a stopwatch for 20 minutes and write down everything that needs to get done. Then, give yourself another 10 minutes to assess which of those tasks are the most important to yourself, your business and your family. Keep that list in mind as you start each day -- and make sure all your activities are centered around those core priorities.

2. Ditch the New Year?s resolutions: A FranklinCovey survey found that 80% of people who make New Year?s resolutions will break them. And a third never make it to the end of January. If you?re one of the many people who have left a string of resolutions behind, it?s time for a new approach.

Rather than creating your resolutions for 2013, use the end of the calendar year to reflect on your business and market. What were some of the best things that your business accomplished this year? What were some of the biggest mistakes? Don?t rush to begin planning the new year until you?ve celebrated your wins and acknowledged your mistakes.

3. Evaluate your year as a business leader: In addition to reflecting on your business, this is a good time to reflect on yourself. After all, as an entrepreneur, you don?t exactly get a yearly performance review. Being as objective as possible, write down your strongest characteristics as a leader -- and your weakest. Then, think about how each of these characteristics impacted your business, team members and partners during the year. This type of objective self-assessment can help you pinpoint areas to improve in 2013.

4. Build important connections: As a good entrepreneur, you?re looking out for interesting opportunities around every corner. And the end of the year offers a bevy of parties and events. Make some time to take advantage of these networking events and meet new people. Sometimes a simple party is the key to a great new client, collaboration or partnership that will pay dividends in the new year.

5. Show the love: During this hectic time, it?s all too easy to become inwardly focused -- where you?re thinking more about crossing things off your list than what (or who) really matters. Of course, holidays are the time for family and friends, but I?m also talking about the professional relationships that matter to you.

Think about the most important people you?ve worked with throughout the year -- whether it?s a devoted assistant or a colleague who keeps introducing you to great contacts. Then, let them know just how much you appreciate them.

6. Unplug and recharge your batteries: No matter how busy your schedule gets, every entrepreneur should take some much-needed time away from the office and digital devices. Take advantage, since this is often the one time of year when people expect you won?t be working (unless, of course, you?re involved in some kind of seasonal business). Downtime is the only real way to hit the reset button, both personally and professionally. And it will open the door to fresh perspectives and new inspiration.

How will you refresh and recharge your business this holiday? Tell us in the comments.
