Death To The Dock Connector? Apple Is Looking For A Connector Design Engineer

apple-dock-connector-to-usb-cableCould Apple really be looking to end their longstanding affair with the 30-pin Dock Connector? It's been a move that's been rumored for years, and a job opening at Cupertino for a Connector Design Engineer adds a bit of fuel to that fire. This person will be "responsible for managing multiple connector designs and developments in support of the iPod product lines." It goes on to describe that this task will "involve adaptation of existing connectors or complete new designs." It's apparently important enough to Apple that they've got another, very similar listing on their jobs page.

Three things that hurt US vs. Brazil

  • Where the big problem on the U.S. back line lies now

Remember when we all sat around straining our brains to fix the gaping hole along the back line, the one at left back? Timmy Chandler came along ? and then dumped us like a cheating girlfriend. No matter, though, because Fabian Johnson rode in to the timely rescue. The Hoffenheim man has little wrong over two matches, strong in one-on-one defending, reasonably well positioned, troublesome on the attack, etc.

But there?s still a bugger of a problem back there; the trouble spot just shifted into the middle.

I?ve already written the early, brutal details about Oguchi Onyewu?s night to forget. He was a little better in the second half ? until the moment when he was late stepping forward, leaving Tim Howard stranded to stop an unchallenged shot that turned into No. 4.

Carlos Bocanegra still has something to offer, but his speed will become an increasingly liability unless Jurgen Klinsmann can find a quality partner to situate alongside him, one with a little more speed. Maybe it?s Clarence Goodson. Or maybe it can be Cameron with a little more top-level experience.

Either way, the case is being built that it just isn?t Onyewu.

  • The imperfect midfield fix

The United States still has spots that are weak and vulnerable. Center back is not the only one.

The midfield mix was good enough against Scotland, but suffered severely Wednesday. Much of the trouble can be traced to Jermaine Jones, who lost too many balls, took way too long to catch the pace of the game (much faster than Saturdays) and wasn?t in the right spots, providing the requisite cover at the moments his team needed it most.

Meanwhile, Michael Bradley had another strong match. Mostly, at any rate.

More from U.S.-Brazil:?
Match report: United States 1-4 Brazil?
Bradley gets PST?s USMNT Man of the Match

There are times when Bradley didn?t move out of the center channel to pressure (or better yet, forcefully eliminate) a Brazilian advance. It underscores a point I think we?re all learning: he?s not a defensive midfielder. Not that he can?t be serviceable there, but it?s not Bradley?s ideal positioning.

Bradley has evolved into a two-way man, and a darn good one. I know the Jose Torres backers may take issue, but Bradley is the best passer on the U.S. team. His ball into Fabian Johnson to start the U.S. goal was pinpoint perfect. Looking back over his body of work in the U.S. shirt, who can deny what he offers going forward, in arranging goals and scoring them?

The three-man arrangement looked better Saturday when Edu was the holding screener and Bradley?s starting positions were higher up the field. (Wednesday, Edu and Jones played ahead of Bradley in the triangle.)

  • Too much whining, not enough ?getting on with it.?

The United States looked a little undone by the early penalty kick decision. Good call or bad, they have to get past it.

Landon Donovan was complaining too much, throwing his arms around when he needed total focus on that bunch of yellow wizards. He must have thought he was back in the L.A. Galaxy uniform; they do a lot of that stuff.

Donovan struggled to get anything going against Marcelo, among the globe?s top left backs, so some frustration may be understandable. Then again, as the most experienced U.S. man, he?s got to provide a better example.

Jones kicked into his bad old habit of lashing out temperamentally, crunching Neymar along the sideline.

Bradley has trimmed that petulant element from his game, and thankfully so. Jones, 30, may be what he is, unable to turn that stuff off at this point. It?s another reason Klinsmann would do well to keep looking for a third central midfielder.

Bottom line: this is big boy soccer, and the stakes will rise dramatically in just over a week. Things won?t always go the U.S. way, and they just have to get on with it.

96% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (91) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (87) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

We may look back on Anderson's works as we do on the boxes of Joseph Cornell -- formal troves of frippery, studded with nostalgic private jokes, that lodge inexplicably in the heart. In Moonrise Kingdom, that lodging is already under way.

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gorgeously shot, ingeniously crafted, ?ber-Andersonian bonbon that, even in its most irritatingly whimsical moments, remains an effective deliverer of cinematic pleasure.

A gossamer fable of adolescent romance, played out with the cheekily whimsical, visually delicious style for which Anderson is famous.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom is bewitching.

80?s movie Review: April - Manchester's Finest

Now I don?t know if it was too busy getting naked with Madonna, relaxing with Frankie or waking George Michael up before he go-gos and crashes into another Prontaprint, but the 80s movie industry wasn?t very busy in April.

So I started with perpetual man-child Michael J Fox and Bright Lights Big City ? unfortunately not a hidden gem beneath a terrible name, like the folk band titled My Left Foot or the-porn-version-has-the-same-name A Few Good Men. Kiefer Sutherland (this time torturing people with his impossibly large hair) and MJF having parties and family issues alike is pleasant, but it?s easy to see why it?s not a stone cold classic. I blame the lack of teenage werewolves.

Then continuing with the Back to the Future theme, we had Marty McFly?s mum Lea Thompson in Casual Sex? (in fact, everyone did). Surprisingly, the name isn?t the worst thing about this film (I?ve had an inherent mistrust of punctuated movie titles since Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot). It?s either the talking head gender clich?s, the leather jacket worn by ?The Vin Man? or the fact there?s a character called ?The Vin Man?. If you?re expecting Casual Sex? to be provocative, you?ll find more sexiness depicted on standard bus stop knob graffiti.

Poor man?s Labyrinth, Legend screened next, but aside from Tim Curry?s best make up job since he was just a sweet transvestite in Rocky Horror, even Tom Cruise, man-child#2 can?t elevate it above a kid?s movie. Probably because he still can?t get into a PG movie without his parents.

Which led me onto My Beautiful Laundrette. Not being an aficionado of landmark gay cinema, I had to rely on the lure of it being Stephen Frears? (surely there?s a queen/The Queen joke in there?) first global hit. It?s also so early that its star Daniel Day-Lewis was still a cockney (?I tiddly-wink your milkshake!?).

A young Pakistani guy is given a laundrette to run by his wheeler-dealer uncle and despite being racially abused by his mates, finds time to convince old pal Day-Lewis to join him in doing up the laundrette (which as it turns out, is also a euphemism). As they struck up a romance behind the boxes of Daz, despite the subtle play between the cultures, I did snigger at the two closeted gay characters being called Johnny and ?Omo (well, Omar but everyone pronounced it Omo).

Originally made for TV but destined for greater things, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay ? and by handling the issues of racial tension, homosexuality and vast unemployment in Thatcher?s London with a darkly comic touch, it probably deserved the nod.

Although with vast civil unrest, it turns out London resembled the alternative 1985?s Hill Valley in BTTF. Some would say it speaks volumes about the two countries. According to the frothy Bright Lights? and Casual Sex?, Americans had cocaine and promiscuity propping up the fun at parties. Whilst our party of choice were the Tories ? even making a tale focused on a laundrette seem dirtier than the crunchy Y-fronts being washed there. So, fancy taking your brain out for a couple of hours? Try the US offerings. Rather take your chances with a dark Brit outlook? Go for Laundrette.

How Buying Electronic Vapor Cigarettes Can be Life Saving?

Do you smoke? Are you addicted to the sinful cigarette? Is it true that you want to give up smoking but are unable to quit? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you need to switch to vapor electronic cigarettes. You must be aware of the harmful effects of a cigarette. It is widely known that a cigarette can damage lungs, kidney and heart in the long run. Its harmful effects are not hidden from anybody. But miraculously, electronic cigarette is free from all these harmful properties. You can freely smoke an electric cigarette without doing any damage to your body. Electric cigarettes are sophisticated devices and a marvelous scientific invention. These cigarettes give the same pleasure as given by a conventional cigarette. Yet they are harmless because they do not burn tobacco.

You must be aware of the harmful effects of tobacco.

The conventional cigarette that you have been smoking hitherto, burns tobacco and emits toxic fumes which damage the organs. However, electronic cigarette nicotine uses an aromatic liquid to create the same taste given out by your regular smoking stick. Since it does not yield harmful fumes, you can inhale this stick without causing damage to yourself. The electronic cigarette burns an aromatic liquid whose vapor gives you pleasure. As you see, it is merely vapor and not the dense smoke which is given out by a conventional cigarette. Hence, an electric cigarette can be, indeed, life-saving when it comes to smoking. If you love to smoke, then you should immediately switch to this form of smoking. You won?t feel any difference while smoking an electric cigarette. It gives the same taste as given out by your regular cigarette. The only significant difference is that instead of tobacco, it uses an aromatic steam which is 100% safe.

Health activists and doctors have, for long, spoken against smoking because of its harmful effects. Now they are, instead, advocating the use of electric cigarette since it is a medically approved and highly recommended substitute of a normal cigarette. Vapor electronic cigarettes look and taste similar to your regular cigarette. But since they give out aromatic steam, they are not harmful and they do not cause any lasting damage to our organs. Instead, they are completely safe. Plus, there are no known side effects of using them.

Smoking is an addiction and it is really hard to quit smoking. Many people resolve to quit but fail to do so because of the nicotine effect. In fact, over 90% of smokers become completely hooked to it and are unable to give it up. If you are in the same boat, then why not switch to electronic cigarette nicotine and save your lungs?

Electronic cigarettes come in multiple flavors. You can easily buy them from internet. All the products sold on internet are 100% genuine and authentic. They do not cause any side effect. Moreover, electronic cigarettes are reasonably priced and would not cost you a fortune. In any case, they are the next best alternative to quitting.

Baltimore Orioles Among MLB's Biggest Surprises: From Pushover To Bully

New York Times:

Matt Wieters made a comment in March that sounded so naive, it was almost charming. It was spring training, when even the lowliest teams can be optimistic. But Wieters, the catcher for the Baltimore Orioles, seemed to push the limits of the plausible.

"There's been teams that go worst to first before," he said by his locker in Sarasota, Fla. "We feel like we have the talent to do it, too."

Union leader says NFL doesn?t deny collusion

NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith speaks as (from 2nd L) Tony Richardson, Domonique Foxworth and Charlie Batch look onduring a press conference held by the NFL Players Association at the Super Bowl XLVI Media Center in the J.W. WASHINGTON (AP) ? NFL players union chief DeMaurice Smith says his group?s claim of collusion will stand up in court.

The NFL Players Association claimed in U.S. District Court in Minnesota on Wednesday that the 32 teams had a secret salary cap in place during the uncapped 2010 season, and that it cost players at least $1 billion in wages.

?Cartels do what cartels will do when left unchecked,? Smith said Thursday outside union headquarters. ?The facts justify the complaint.?

On Wednesday, hours after the court action, the NFL issued a statement saying ?the union?s claims have absolutely no merit and we fully expect them to be dismissed.?

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello also said: ?There was no collusion. There was no agreement. These claims are totally unfounded.?

The union has spent much of the offseason challenging the league on a variety of issues ? from punishment handed down by Commissioner Roger Goodell for the alleged roles of four players in the Saints? bounties program to appeals in drug-related discipline. Now comes the court action in Minnesota, filed one day after the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys had grievances dismissed after having their salary caps reduced for this season and next.

The Redskins are losing $36 million and the Cowboys $10 million for overspending during the uncapped season ? a revelation that, in part, spurred the union?s claim of collusion.

?When we feel those rules are violated, we will, on behalf of our players, always act in their best interest,? Smith said.

?The 32 teams are defendants of the action right now. If there is evidence that is developed later on that would demonstrate that any one of those teams did not abide by the conspiracy, then my guess is those teams will make the appropriate assertions, and we?ll see where we end up.?

The complaint claims that ?conspiracy? set a $123 million salary cap for the 2010 season, when owners did not have the authority to do so.

According to the league, the CBA signed last August to end the 4 1-2 month lockout had clauses precluding the union from filing such a complaint. But NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler disputed that Wednesday, saying a portion of those clauses was rejected by the court.

?It doesn?t sound like you?re denying the existence of collusion, does it?? Smith said.

As for the discord between the union and the league, Smith said it shouldn?t be surprising.

?We all got along, and the league locked us out,? Smith said. ?We certainly had players across history who left every bit of blood, sweat and tears on the field. And yet, the National Football League continues to fight us on a number of workers? comp cases.?

Communication Is Very important cheap nfl jerseys To get a - TypePad

When men and women are informed they will need to communicate far more they often think that that is cheap jerseys an open invitation to speak but there is a complete difference among talking and communicating.

Communicating is an art, and artwork of combining the capability to express your opinions and emotions in this kind of a means as to make sure the individual or men and women that you are talking to know what you will be looking to say with all the potential to hear and comprehend one more persons perspective.

The number of instances I?ve sat in an area, normally in meetings and at conferences and Ive just watched and listened to what exactly is likely on about me. It really is absolutely interesting when entire teams of men and women haven?t any capacity to pay attention to their colleagues, partners or close friends and hence can not comprehend or comprehend any viewpoint aside from their own.

What could have been covered in five minutes or discovered in 50 % an hour often requires hours or days simply because persons refuse to sit down back again, cheap jerseys pay attention and realize.

More than the years its amazing the number of times individuals are provided with facts that, whenever they acted upon, could entirely alter a connection, profession or the achievement of a business. But, since the sheer absence of peoples capacity to hear and think through one more persons point of view special opportunities pass them by.

Relationships are not any unique to the function atmosphere other than you can find, generally, just two of you. Generally, what could be a wedding made in heaven is destroyed by the sheer inability to communicate. cheap nfl jerseys Probably the most profitable associations, be it organization or personnel are people whereby both parties have robust verbal and listening abilities.

Quite a few relationship problems start with weak communication. Couples usually really feel that their companion need to know what they are thinking and how they feel so do not communicate after which speculate why they feel neglected and under valued.

How lots of people determine not to tell their companion something simply because they dont know tips on how to say it after which the problem just eats absent at the relationship until there is certainly no relationship left What a waste materials, just the sheer ability to share an issue could make what seemed to become an insurmountable concern a small little blip on a significant horizon.

So anytime you feel stressed or dont understand what to do dont just bottle it up, speak about this, seek out tips and hear to the answer. Dont maintain tranquil cheap nfl jerseys when you know inside your heart an issue has to be aired and dont place off till tomorrow what has to be sorted these days. Tomorrow never will come!!

It truly is the way you say one thing that may wreck a relationship and not what you will need to say. The wrong way is just to blurt out one thing that you simply know will worsen or distress your partner. The final factor you want is for them to acquire defensive, storm off or burst into floods of tears. You desire the person you happen to be wanting to talk with to become open up and perceptive and so that you can have the ability to attain this, your timing and approach has to become right.

Each and every person is various what?s going to function with one person wont essentially perform with one more and with many people all you could do is sew the seed then let them stroll away and work it out for themselves.

One person I am aware never ever actually listens to anybody. She is one of individuals folks who is usually suitable no matter what, hasnt a clue about becoming a team player and operates inside a zero tolerance zone. Regular strategies and process of reasoning just dont operate and alls you may do is plant the seed of believed which at some point develops into her, own appropriate thought.

Offered peoples individuality you will need to study what, could be the cheap jerseys appropriate method for you as well as your companion. Make certain that you just under no circumstances start a discussion when you dont have time for you to complete it, dont insist on a discussion when one of you is off out to function, dealing with the youngsters or simply comforting before their favorite Tv programme. In the event the timing appears to become never right request the query when would it not be a great time for us to just sit down and talk. What ever you do, usually do not let your self appear agitated either in anything you say or the way you say it. Body language can just as easily put your partner around the defensive as whatever you say to them. Even if your partner is vying for a fight just dont react.

Keep in mind, the initial golden rule, approaching defensive with defensive is often a sure strategy to failure.

One with the crucial ways to enhance communication would be to develop robust listening expertise. Partners usually fail to listen to what their companion has to say, interrupt and give the impact that regardless of what is said they wont modify their thoughts. One trick to ensure which you have listened and also you do comprehend is usually to repeat what you?ve observed. This will exhibit that you have listened to what was said and by repeating it back you?ve got the opportunity to grasp and comprehend.

How typically do we attempt and perform by means of a problem and its only at the level we?re detailing the issue to someone else does the magic mild bulb swap on which enables us to come back up with all the solution.

For anyone who is using an exam would you expect to know every thing just by being told it as soon as For most people I would say not. We have to function at it and work at it tough.

No one ever mentioned marriage will be straightforward its just an additional lesson we?ve to discover as we experience lifestyle but if you?d like to conserve your marriage and make it even more special than it had been ahead of then there is quite tiny to quit you.

Relationship difficulties can lay hefty on your mind, turn out to be a load and what was originally a compact problem can create into an insurmountable mountain.

For those who start to feel that marital concerns are beginning to weigh intensely in your mind, get a break and do something you get pleasure from and preferably together with your companion. If you can refocus your focus of the superior items in existence, daily difficulties often seem that a lot smaller sized. Spending a bit time collectively and experiencing each and every other?s organization could allow you as well as your partner to recapture many of the emotions that have been missing by way of continuous arguing and allow you to get back a good viewpoint on your relationship.

Just one final word of guidance, when you?re sensation down and really feel you no longer need to preserve your marriage just don?t forget the grass isnt constantly greener within the other facet.

In the event you think you have financial problems now what does one feel it?s going to be like when you split your assets, should you really feel you dont have time to do things what will it be like when you?re on your own or worse just one parent and when you really feel lonely now how will you really feel when just about every time you stroll within your entrance doorway alls you?ve is your personal firm. Now none of those ideas have already been aired to inspire you to stay inside a poor relationship but somewhat to generate you think about no matter if or not yours is as negative as you believe.

That you are the learn of the own future and if you would like to turn a negative marriage about you may have the energy at your fingertips.

A growing sense of optimism in housing market

Jacy Painter Kelly and her son, Painter, 5, cement handprints at their new home near Charlotte, N.C.

By Bill Briggs

While lugging 40 new cabinets into their nearly built home Wednesday, the Kelly family will gleefully stack another layer of chaos onto the saw-and-sales frenzy buzzing through their suburban Charlotte subdivision.

?It is a crazy-bizarre scene," said Jacy Painter Kelly, who will move into her new, four-bedroom house in Baxter Village in August along with her two young kids and husband. "Sales are insane. And the Goodyear store across the street gets a lot of business from all the nails in (residents?) tires.??

The bustle at Baxter Village is part of a quickening home-construction pulse across the nation: New-home sales edged up 3.3 percent from March to April to a seasonally adjusted 343,000-unit annual pace after a 332,000-unit rate in March, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

That is a far cry from the 1.3 million sold at the height of the housing boom in 2005, but still represents the latest sign the battered housing market has regained a semblance of normality.

The median price of a new home sold hit $235,700 last month, up 4.9 percent from April 2011, according to Commerce statistics. A separate report Wednesday from the Federal Housing Finance Agency showed home prices also gained 1.8 percent in March after pushing 0.3 percent higher in February.

When blended with Tuesday?s report from the National Association of Realtors that existing-home sales touched a two-year high in April, analysts say evidence of a modest real estate revival seems to be mounting.?

?Things are looking good,? said Pat Newport, an economist with IHS Global Insight. ?These are still very low numbers by historical standards. But when combined with the NAR report, this tells us that something is going on. Prices are stabilizing after adjusting for inflation.

?It?s hard to get a good picture of the housing market early in the year because (warming) weather can distort the numbers. But I think the picture emerging is a good one. The housing market is getting better,? Newport added. ?We had a very good first quarter, and the numbers are telling us it was more than just good weather helping the market.?

Amid Wednesday?s fresh data dump, Newport called the FHFA release ?the really good news? because ?it showed prices are increasing pretty much across the board, in all nine census divisions.?

Newly built homes represent less than 20 percent of the U.S. housing market, but they place a far larger footprint on the overall economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs per year and produces about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

The 3.3 percent rise in new home sales ?is line with our expectations for a continued, modest increase in home sales as buyers gain confidence in the economy and their jobs,? said David Crowe, chief economist with the NAHB.

TODAY real estate contributor Barbara Corcoran gives a peek inside five family-sized homes including a mountain oasis with covered porch in Boise, Idaho, a 1905 neoclassic home in Wilmington, Delaware with gleaming hardwood floors and a tropical retreat in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

For the Kelly family, building made more budget sense than purchasing an existing home. They needed extra cash on hand and an opportunity to create a unique space to accommodate Jacy Painter Kelley?s in-home, kitchen-goods business, lucylucybangbang. She makes hanging dishtowels. From her work station, she needs to be able to keep track of her two children, ages 5 and 2.

?We looked at existing homes. They just weren?t what we wanted. With my business growing quickly, I need a place in the home where I?m really central to everything,? Kelly said.

?When you buy a previously owned house, you have to put a lot of cash down. You don?t have a lot left to make your home exactly what we needed. By building, you still have to put cash down but you can design just what you want it to be,? she added. ?I don?t want to be tucked away by myself and I don?t want to be working in the dining room.??

Do you see a real estate revival where you live?

Y! Big Story: The fuss over Cory Booker

Everything you need to get up to speed on the big story of the day
Cory Booker on "Meet the Press"

No offense, New Jersey?but just why should we care what Cory Booker says?

The Newark mayor, so familiar with the media spotlight, tripped when he criticized Obama ads targeting Romney's Bain days. The guy in charge of America's 67th largest city sure knows how to steal the spotlight.

This time, the attention backfired after he appeared on "Meet the Press" to weigh in on the Euro zone, Facebook's IPO, and Obama's strengths. Since then, America's most popular mayor has taken a brutal political beating from the left and unwanted affection from the right. The turmoil hints at Democrat nerves over what some perceive as a close election, and Republican eagerness to gain a foothold against a presumptive nominee accused of being elitist. One thing might be faintly reassuring, at least to Booker: His words count.

Booker Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube: Besides oodles of charisma, Booker is an exhaustive social media user: He ranks #4 among most-followed elected officials in office and #26 as Most Influential in the Twitter political arena.

He has won the hearts of New Jerseyites for his Twitter snow-shoveling service. In 2012, Booker saved a neighbor from a burning house (suffering smoke inhalation and second-degree burns) and teamed up with Gov. Chris Christie in a video that went viral.

Nor does he shun old media: He was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Street Fight" and Peabody Award-winning series "Brick City" (described a real-life version of "The Wire"). The mayor emerged in a 2009 war with Conan O'Brien that showcased his ability to straddle digital and broadcast worlds:

On September 23, O'Brien joked that Newark's health care program included a one-way bus ticket out of the capitol. Don't mess with Brick City: Booker, riding on a Sundance Channel exposure, took to the Web with his mock response. The back-and-forth entailed bans from airports, then entire states (Booker from the Sunshine State, "CoCo" from the Eastern Seaboard) until?yes?Hillary Clinton brokered a detente. Hands were shook, a $100k donation was granted, and battlefield history of scrappy Web vs. big TV was made. (Dec. 21, 2009, "Host Hostilities," Yahoo! Year in Review)

The quote that launched a thousand blogs: Booker's "Meet the Press" appearance might have gone largely unnoticed, until he criticized the negative tone from both sides:

[T]his kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It's nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity, stop attacking Jeremiah Wright. This stuff has got to stop because what it does is it undermines, to me, what this country should be focused on. It's a distraction from the real issues. It's either going to be a small campaign about this crap or it's going to be a big campaign, in my opinion, about the issues that the American public cares about. (May 20, "Meet the Press")

Republicans embraced his 88 words, while Democrats both berated and defended him.

Cory Booker and the Big Bain Backfire: a sampling of comments
Backlash Support (dubious and otherwise) Backlash against the backlash
"...[O]n this particular instance he was just wrong." (Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod) "An urban mayor who nearly DIED saving neighbor from a fire, has earned right 2 demand integrity & courage from other leaders" (Civil rights activist Van Jones) "I would not have backed off the comments if I were Mayor Booker." (Former Tenn. Rep. Harold Ford, Jr.)
"Booker appears to have damaged the Obama campaign's efforts to define Mr. Romney in the early weeks of the general-election race." (May 22, Christian Science Monitor) "Yes, doggone it. It was a shame to see Cory kind of back down from what his answer was which was so candid." (Sarah Palin) "Booker's independence from Democrats should come as little surprise." (May 21, New Jersey Ledger)
"I'll tell ya, it was astounding that they have listed this guy as a surrogate when he is intending to go on television and to trash everything Obama is making the case for." ("Hardball" commentator Chris Matthews) "I Stand with Cory. Don't Let the Obama Campaign Silence Support for Job Creation." (Republican National Committee petition) "[Chris Matthews] ought to celebrate all truth-telling, even when it does involve "betraying" partisan loyalties." (May 22, The Atlantic)

Booker played quick defense. He clarified his stance on YouTube and waxed philosophical on Facebook. He repeatedly declared his Twitter loyalty.

Cory Booker #IStandWithObama

Obama "surrogate" or saboteur?: Salon, which called Booker the "surrogate from hell," imagined more fiendish motives from a man "just too smart and too smooth to screw up so epically":

More likely, Booker went on the show to help himself and to advance his own long-term political prospects. And on that score, his appearance was a success ... It wouldn't be surprising if Booker has already heard from the White House, and surely he's now in for a world of abuse from Obama supporters. But that hardly means he made a mistake, at least in terms of his own ambition. (May 20, Salon)

As Salon points out, the 43-year-old was the Obama precursor before people even knew there was an Obama. Booker, who is black with Caucasian and Native American ancestry, is laden with Ivy League degrees and carries enormous working-class cred. Then again, a Fox News editorial not only called the Obama campaign ad a "brilliant pivot point," but declared that Booker gave the president a chance to reinforce the message.

Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, made headlines calling the ad "nauseating to the American public," and that gave Mr. Obama the perfect opportunity to attack Mr. Romney, oh so effectively ... Despite what pundits say about Mr. Booker's performance on "Meet the Press," Mayor Booker played the shill so well?he deserves an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. (May 22, Fox News)

And who's to say both scenarios are mutually exclusive? In the meantime, Booker can look fondly back at days when both sides could work together?what a difference a month can make.

Afghans back Chicago deal, warn West to keep promises

KABUL (Reuters) - People in Afghanistan were surprisingly optimistic on Tuesday about NATO's plan to pull combat troops out of their war-ravaged nation by the end of 2014, but warned Western leaders to stick to aid and security promises.

A Chicago summit meeting of the 28-member bloc, attended also by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other world leaders, endorsed an exit strategy on Monday that calls for handing control of Afghanistan to its own security forces by the middle of next year.

But it left unanswered questions about how to prevent a slide into chaos and a Taliban resurgence after the pullout.

Despite the sense of combat fatigue in Chicago and frustration that nearly 11 years of military engagement had failed to defeat Taliban Islamists, Afghans were surprisingly upbeat. They said the agreement showed Western nations would not abandon their nation after a decade-long war and a massive aid and reconstruction effort.

"I don't think foreign nations will leave us as easily as they say. The international community has spent billions of dollars here now," said university student Tawab, speaking to Reuters at a park near a mosque in central Kabul.

"The conference has decided that some foreign forces will stay in Afghanistan, so it's like back-up support."

Housing prices in Kabul have jumped 15 percent since U.S. President Barack Obama, who declared on Monday that the 10-year war was "effectively over", visited Kabul to sign a long-term security deal with Karzai on May 2.

Donor nations have been negotiating agreements with Karzai's government committing to ongoing aid and reconstruction support, as well as government and agricultural advisers, for at least a decade beyond the two-year NATO drawdown ending in 2014.

Since a U.S-led coalition helped Afghan forces topple the Taliban government in late 2001, Afghanistan has been one of the world's largest aid recipients, with more than US$57 billion spent on development to help counter support for insurgents.

In volatile southern Helmand province, one of the most violent parts of the country and the scene of several major clashes between the Taliban and Western troops, villagers said their lives had improved.

AND NOW WE HAVE A HEALTH CLINIC

Ezatullah, a shopkeeper in the town of Marjah where NATO troops fought one of the bloodiest battles of the war, said a 35-km (22-mile) paved road connecting to the provincial capital Lashkar Gah had nearly been completed, cutting costs and travel time to prevent vital food supplies spoiling in the area's searing summer heat.

"And now we have a health clinic built three years ago which provides most services to people. But still people are facing problems, as it's not enough. There should be at least a clinic in every big village," he said.

Security had also improved since 15,000 U.S. and British surge troops ousted around 2,000 insurgents from the area, said Marjah resident Nisar Ahmad, draining support from the Taliban.

"Now this district is fully protected by Afghan Local Police. Almost all of our schools are open and boys and girls attend schools. But we still face a lack of electricity despite the billions of dollars spent," Ahmad said.

In the Arghandab district of neighboring Kandahar province - where U.S. troops suffered heavy casualties in 2010 - local resident Hajji Shah Mohammad Ahmadi said economic progress had been spurred by roads, schools and new health clinics.

And even in restive eastern provinces, where Western troops are still fighting to choke off insurgent supply routes across the mountainous Pakistan border in one of the last major offensives of the war, local people counted improvements.

Abdul Naser, from Chapa Dara district in Kunar, said where once there had been no roads, water canals, electricity, schools, clinics or security, now there was vehicle traffic, power generators, doctors and education.

"We got two clinics during the past months with female doctors. We have paved roads. But some projects were not well built and people still face some security threats," he said.

However, an April poll by the privately-run Tolo TV channel found just over 50 percent of Afghans though civil war would break out again after foreign troops withdrew, while 26 percent saw no change and 23 percent thought security would improve.

Still, property dealers in the capital Kabul - once convulsed by civil war but where cars have now replaced bicycles and some high-rise apartment buildings have sprung up - say business is thriving despite worries.

"People's morale and economic morale have gone up," said Mohammad Nader Faizyaar, the owner of the high-end Faisal Business Centre mall that retails everything from women's fashion accessories to furniture.

"People feel that the future of this country is stable and everyone can hopefully invest."

Sarwar Akbari, 38, a Kabul resident in the Wazir diplomatic district, said international backers had to now honor their promises not to abandon the country amid pressure on aid budgets, particularly in cash-strapped Europe. He also said they had to reach some kind of agreement with the Taliban.

"If they don't fulfill their promises, and if they don't stop neighboring countries from interfering in Afghanistan and reach a peace with the Taliban, then this conference and any others will be useless," he said.

California Realtors Help Seniors With Chores

Recent surveys in both the United States and Europe have found that real estate agents are among the least-respected professionals, based in part on their perceived lack of ethics.

But a number of real estate agents in California are working hard to erase those negative stereotypes by helping local seniors.

As reported recently in the San Jose Mercury News, members of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors have been volunteering for about 10 years with their association?s Realtor Service Volunteer Program (RSVP), which has real estate professionals assist local seniors with household errands and chores.

Some of the tasks include changing light bulbs, vacuuming floors, washing windows, and changing furnace filters.

?The seniors ask for so little and are so appreciative of the help we can give them,? real estate agent Eileen Giorgi told the newspaper.

Giorgi said that for seniors who are still living at home, completing daily tasks can be often be too difficult to accomplish, and larger projects in the house can be even harder. One 82 year-old senior was quoted by the newspaper as expressing his appreciation.

The RSVP group helps seniors who are still living in their homes, but seniors in assisted living communities already have most of these tasks included. To begin your search, click HERE.

Tiny sensor reads palms, secures your laptop

12 hrs.

Laptops and smartphones of the future may read our palms before they allow us to access our personal data, according to ongoing security technology under development in Japan.

The sensor under development by researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories confirms a person?s identity based on the pattern of blood vessels inside their hand.

While the palm-reading technology isn?t new (the company is already rolling out ATMs based on the concept), the sensors are now small enough ??just 16 mm square and 5 mm thick ? to be used in mobile computers.

The palm-reading technology is different than reading skin lines to determine a person?s longevity or love life, or even reading a fingerprint to determine identity.

"Fingerprints give information about the surface of the hand, but they can be hard to use under some conditions,? Takashi Morihara, a researcher at Fujitsu Laboratories, told?video news website Diginfo TV.

?Palm vein ID uses information about the inside of the hand, so it can be used consistently under any conditions."

For now, the sensors are too big to work in smartphones, but pocket-sized gadgets are the goal. For those who worry about leaving their phone at the coffee shop, that could come as good news.

What Is It?

Image: Courtesy of Hari Manoharan Stanford University/SLAC, mota.stanford.edu

The honeycomb lattice is one of nature?s favorite patterns. In the two-dimensional crystal of carbon atoms known as graph?ene, for instance, the honeycomb structure arises from bonds among the atoms. Kenjiro K. Gomes of Stanford University and his colleagues have learned to make a honeycomb material in a striking new way. They place carbon monoxide molecules at regular intervals on the surface of a copper crystal, creating an imitation graphene layer. (The added molecules appear as black dots.)

By tweaking the pattern, the researchers can investigate how variations of small-scale structure change a material?s electric properties. In the image at the left, a slightly deformed honeycomb lattice forces the electrons to behave as if they were subjected to intense magnetic fields. Such ?designer materials? may lead to the discovery of new and exotic physics.
