US student says he was beaten after Cairo arrest (AP)

Forced to lie still for hours in the dark, the American students held during protests in Egypt were told they would be shot if they moved or made any noise, one of them said Sunday on his first full day home.

"It was the most frightening experience of my life, I believe," Derrik Sweeney said.

Speaking to The Associated Press by Skype from Jefferson City, Mo., Sweeney said the evening of Nov. 20 started peacefully in Cairo, with Tahrir Square "abuzz with ideas of democracy and freedom."

The three wandered the streets and wound up in a large group of protesters outside the Interior Ministory, Sweeney said. The demonstrations escalated, with the protesters yelling and perhaps throwing stones, he said.

"Eventually the police shot back something, I'm not exactly sure what," he said. "We didn't wait to see. But as soon as we saw some sort of firing coming from the gun and heard it, the whole crowd stampeded out and we sprinted away."

He said they fled to an area that seemed calmer and were approached by four or five Egyptians in plain clothes.

The Egyptians offered to lead them to safety but instead took them into custody, Sweeney said.

They were threatened to be force-fed gasoline, beaten and forced to lie in a near-fetal position in the dark for six hours with their hands in cuffs behind their backs, Sweeney said. He said they were told: "If you move or make any noise, we will shoot you."

"They were hitting us in the face and in the back of the neck," he said. "Not to the point of bleeding or I can't say I have any lasting major scars at this point, but they were hitting us."

Sweeney is 19 and studies at Georgetown University. He was arrested along with Luke Gates, 21, who attends Indiana University and is from Bloomington, Ind., and Gregory Porter, 19, who studies at Drexel University and is from Glenside, Pa.

The students flew home Saturday after an Egyptian court ordered their release two days earlier. The three were studying abroad at American University in Cairo, which is near Tahrir Square.

A popular uprising earlier this year forced out Egypt's longtime autocratic leader, Hosni Mubarak. But the democratic age that Egyptians hoped for has not followed. The military is in control, and protesters want it to hand power to civilians.

At least 43 protesters have been killed since Nov. 19 and 2,000 wounded, most of them in Cairo. Landmark parliamentary elections will start Monday.

Egyptian officials said they arrested the three students on the roof of a university building and accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

But Sweeney denies doing anything to harm anyone and said he and the other Americans weren't ever on the roof or handling or throwing explosives.

"I don't know where that rooftop idea actually came from," he said. "We were never on a rooftop, we never entered a building. The American University campus building on that street where we were arrested ? there were a lot of people that had broken in there, it was swarmed with protesters ? but we were not on there. We were on a street."

In an earlier telephone interview with the AP after he arrived at St. Louis' international airport, Sweeney said he and the other students' treatment improved dramatically after the first night. He spoke with a U.S. Embassy official, his mother and a lawyer. He said he denied the accusations during what he called proper questioning by Egyptian authorities.

"There was really marked treatment between the first night and the next three nights or however long it was," Sweeney said. "After that first night, we were treated in a just manner ... we were given food when we needed, and it was OK."

The students took separate flights out of Egypt, and Porter and Gates declined to recount details of their experience after arriving in Philadelphia and Indianapolis, respectively.

"I'm not going to take this as a negative experience. It's still a great country," Gates said.

Porter said only that he was thankful for the help he and the others received from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, administrators at the university they were attending, and attorneys in Egypt and the U.S.

"I'm just so thankful to be back, to be in Philadelphia right now," he said.

(AP) ? An Ohio woman who answered what police say was a phony Craigslist job ad that lured victims into a deadly robbery scheme says she felt sick to her stomach when she heard about it.

Heather Tuttle, of Ravenna, said Friday that she didn't learn of the potential danger she was in until an FBI agent called her this week.

The FBI says the agent that interviewed Tuttle was one of numerous agents contacting applicants to check on their well-being.

The 27-year-old Tuttle says she applied for the job running a ranch in southern Ohio in early October but never heard back.

A body found Friday in a shallow grave in Akron may be a second killing connected to the phony job listing.

Cairo street battles rage on through the night (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian riot police fired barrages of tear gas at hardcore protesters demanding Egypt's army relinquish power in a sixth night of violence which has led the interior minister, according to one report, to propose postponing elections due on November 28.

Scores of young men, coughing and gasping for air stumbled into dark side streets off Cairo's Tahrir Square to escape the acrid smoke during the to-and-fro battle with police.

But undeterred, tens of thousands still thronged the square peacefully late into the night on Wednesday to protest at the deaths of more than 30 people in the violence and reject the army's offer of a referendum on its rule.

In light of the violence, Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy presented a report to the military council proposing a postponement of the parliamentary election planned for November 28, Al Jazeera television said on Thursday, quoting unnamed sources. It was not immediately possible to verify the report.

The election, due to begin on Monday, has been billed as Egypt's first free vote in decades.

The army and the Muslim Brotherhood, which expects to do well in the election, says it must go ahead but many protesters are unwilling to trust the army to oversee a clean vote and hand real control of the country to the winner.

The generals' popularity has waned in the nine months since they nudged President Hosni Mubarak from office and swore to steer the country toward civilian democracy, as suspicion grew that they were manoeuvring to stay in power beyond elections.

The head of the military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, has pledged to bring forward a presidential vote and offered a new interim government but the demonstrators are unconvinced.

"The military council must leave and hand power to civilians. They don't want to leave so that their corruption isn't exposed," said 23-year-old student Ahmed Essam.

He said he joined the protests when he saw riot police raining blows on peaceful demonstrators on Saturday. "Everything is like in Mubarak's time," he said.

DEATHS

Gunfire rattled near the Interior Ministry, a symbol of state authority and target of the protesters, on Wednesday night. Several gave accounts of people shot dead but these could not immediately be verified.

At a makeshift clinic near Tahrir, doctor Tareq Salem said four people had died there on Wednesday, two from bullet wounds and two from asphyxiation.

He said three volunteer doctors have been killed since the violence began.

"They were fresh graduates," he said, splashing his face with saline fluid to counter the effects of the latest barrage of gas. One died of suffocation, the other two of bullet wounds sustained while assessing injuries outside, he said.

Essawy told state television earlier that only tear gas was being fired by the security forces but there were unidentified people shooting from rooftops near Tahrir.

Thousands turned out in the second city of Alexandria and in Port Said. One died and two were injured in Ismailia, a city on the Suez Canal, security sources said.

Protesters accused the army of using hired thugs to buildings and paint a political protest as mindless vandalism.

TV stations showed a man being beaten in Tahrir Square after he was accused of working for state security under cover and shooting at protesters.

Ambulances, sirens wailing, ferried casualties away while smoke billowed over the area from fires lit by youths.

Gunfire rang out repeatedly, fuel-filled bottles erupted in flames and riot police filled the street in front of their main position with round after round of tear gas, driving protesters, coughing, into side streets. Every so often, the demonstrators regrouped and would again edge toward the ministry.

SURGE OF SOLIDARITY

What started as a sit-in on Saturday night has turned into a mass demonstration reminiscent of the 18-day uprising against Mubarak as Egyptians appalled at the mistreatment of protesters joined them in solidarity.

Youthful demonstrators took Tantawi's offer of a referendum on whether military rule should end earlier as a ploy to undermine their cause by appealing to Egyptians who fear further upheaval.

Many worry the unrest will prolong economic stagnation and delay any improvement in a morose business climate that has deepened the poverty of millions.

Those that did join the protest said it is always better to take a stand.

"I want to have a better life and feel safe. Since the military council took power, it has been worse," said protester Abdel Salam Roshdy.

Nader el Sayed, a former goal keeper of Egypt's national football team, led protesters in Tahrir chanting: "The blood of the martyrs won't be for free."

Protesters unfurled a huge sign denouncing Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister for two decades, and his deputy Sami Enan, along with the rest of the ruling SCAF military council.

"Down, down with military rule. We the people are the red line. The people want to bring down the field marshal, Sami Enan and the military council," it read.

The overall death toll has reached 39 by a Reuters count. One man was killed in Alexandria and another died in what the state news agency MENA said was an attack on a police station in the northern town of Marsa Matrouh.

The Health Ministry said 32 people had been killed and 2,000 wounded in disturbances across the country of 80 million.

Egypt's currency dipped to its lowest level in almost seven years on Wednesday and the yield on an Egyptian dollar bond soared to its highest since March, suggesting that investors are unconvinced that stability will return soon.

Mitt Romney's Immigration Stance Now Clear: Pressure Undocumented To Leave The Country

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney's evolution into a full-fledged immigration hawk is complete.

The Republican presidential candidate's comments this week on the issue of undocumented immigrants made clear where he stands now: The U.S. government should do nothing proactive beyond creating a hostile environment for those in the country illegally, in the hopes that they leave.

Anyone in the United States in violation of federal law should go back to his or her country of origin, Romney said Wednesday during a tele-town hall with Iowa voters.

The former Massachusetts governor noted that he favors a "path to citizenship" for undocumented immigrants, but added that "consists of going to their home country, applying for citizenship or permanent residency just like everybody else, and getting back in the line."

"They should have to get in the same line with everybody else who wants to come here legally," Romney said.

In 2007, Romney had also talked of undocumented immigrants returning to their country of origin, but back then he didn't appear to favor that approach for all. In the end, his comments in a key Dec. 16, 2007, interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" were jumbled and unclear.

"They should have a set period during which period they sign up for application for permanent residency or for citizenship. But there's a set period whereupon they should return home. And if they've been approved for citizenship or for a permanent residency, well, that would be a different matter. But for the great majority, they'll be going home," Romney told Tim Russert in that interview.

The Romney campaign did not answer questions about whether those comments constituted the view that some, but not all, undocumented immigrants should have to leave the country. The phrase "great majority" implies it is what he meant.

So in the past, Romney indicated an openness to creating a process by which undocumented immigrants might achieve permanent status in the U.S. But his position has hardened: He now believes the government should do nothing directly for those who are in the country without documentation and want to stay, regardless of whether they are productive members of society or are receiving government benefits or are involved in criminal enterprises.

He wants to direct immigrants' behavior through "incentives."

"People respond to incentives," Romney said during the Republican presidential debate Tuesday night. "And if you can become a permanent resident of the United States by coming here illegally, you'll do so."

An incentive approach mainly means making it so difficult for undocumented immigrants to be in the U.S. that they leave on their own, as Romney's top spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, explained to Philip Klein of the Washington Examiner after the debate Tuesday.

"No in-state tuition, no benefits of any kind, no employment. You put in place an employment verification system with penalties for employers that hire illegals, that will shut off access to the job market, and they will self-retreat. They will go to their countries," Fehrnstrom said.

Romney reiterated this position in the tele-town hall Wednesday: "So for me, the answer is pretty straightforward: fence, enough troops, an identification system that identifies who's here legally, and then tough sanctions for employers that hire people who are here illegally."

This answer would not actually address all undocumented immigrants. A good number would remain. But Romney has apparently decided that it is too dangerous to cross the conservative base of the Republican Party, which is vehemently against any form of normalization for undocumented immigrants.

Romney's shift on the issue first saw the light of day in the 2008 campaign, when he ran to the right of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) -- the party's eventual nominee -- on the immigration issue. Then, as with his attacks on Newt Gingrich now, Romney denounced McCain as favoring "amnesty."

During a Wednesday appearance in Iowa, Romney attacked Gingrich for his comments at the previous night's debate.

Gingrich's plan is to open a "path to legality" for some undocumented immigrants. "We need a path to legality, but not citizenship, for some of these individuals who have deep ties to America, including family, church and community ties," states his 10-point immigration plan.

As the former speaker of the House put it Tuesday night, "You get to be legal, but you don't get a pass to citizenship."

Gingrich added, "And so there's a way to ultimately end up with a country where there's no more illegality, but you haven't automatically given amnesty to anyone."

His plan would require securing the border, establishing a guest worker program, deporting those who are in the U.S. illegally and have committed crimes, and then creating what he likened Tuesday night to a "World War II Selective Service board" to review the cases of the undocumented.

A Gingrich spokesman explained Wednesday that "local citizen review boards" would review local cases of undocumented immigrants who want to stay in the country. "They could be judged by a jury of their neighbors," R.C. Hammond told the Des Moines Register.

But in Iowa on Wednesday, Romney said Gingrich had "offered a new doorway to amnesty."

"I know there's going to be great interest in finding how far we can apply amnesty, and I just think we make a mistake as a Republican Party to try to describe which people who come here illegally should be given amnesty, to be able to jump ahead of the line of people who have been waiting in line," Romney said in Des Moines. "My view is people who have waited in line patiently to come to this country legally should be ahead in line. And those who come here illegally should not be given a special deal or a special accelerated right to become a permanent resident or citizen."

Gingrich's 10-point plan says exactly the same thing. One of his three principles for immigration reform is this: "Under no circumstance can a path to citizenship be created which would allow those who have broken the law to receive precedence over those who patiently waited to become residents and citizens via the legal process. Those who adhered to our immigration law cannot be usurped by those who violated it."

Gingrich shot back at Romney on Twitter Wednesday, linking to a snippet of the 2007 "Meet the Press" interview in which Romney said, "Those people who had come here illegally and are in this country, the 12 million or so that are here illegally, should be able to sign up for permanent residency or citizenship."

"So what's your position on citizenship for illegals again? (I oppose it.)," Gingrich tweeted. He also linked to his 10-step plan. The Romney campaign has not released any immigration plan.

Even the tone of Romney's rhetoric on immigration is far different from what it was just a few years ago. In a 2005 interview with the Boston Globe, he said of undocumented immigrants, "These people contribute in many cases to our economy and to our society. In some cases, they do not. But that's a whole group we're going to have to determine how to deal with."

In that interview, Romney said he had not formulated a position on various immigration reform plans being debated, but proposals by then-President George W. Bush and Sen. McCain were "reasonable." Specifically, he said that McCain's plan was "quite different" from "amnesty."

"It's saying you could work your way into becoming a legal resident of the country by working here without taking benefits and then applying and then paying a fine," Romney noted.

In the 2007 "Meet the Press" interview, Russert read a quote from a Romney interview with the Lowell Sun. "I don't believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country," Romney had told the Sun. "With these 11 million people, let's have them registered, know who they are. Those who've been arrested or convicted of crimes shouldn't be here. Those that are paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process towards application for citizenship, as they would from their home country."

On "Meet the Press," Romney stood by that position, telling Russert that "those people who had come here illegally and are in this country -- the 12 million or so that are here illegally -- should be able to stay, sign up for permanent residency or citizenship, but they should not be given a special pathway, a special guarantee that all of them get to stay here for the rest of their lives merely by virtue of having come here illegally."

He then added the nebulous line about having "a great majority" of undocumented immigrants leave the country.

Amanda Terkel contributed to this report.

Another Arab leader set to fall?

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to sign a U.S.-backed power transfer deal mediated by Gulf Arab states to resolve the impoverished country's crisis, Yemen's state television reported.

Saleh has repeatedly promised to sign the Gulf-brokered agreement, only to change his mind every time.

Under the deal, Saleh would step down and transfer power to the vice president in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

"The president ... arrived this morning in Riyadh on a visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, following an invitation from the Saudi leadership, to attend the signing of the Gulf initiative and its operational mechanism," state news agency Saba said.

Saba said Saleh had received a telephone call from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday to thank him "for his efforts to extract Yemen out of the crisis in a peaceful way."

The report did not say when the deal would be signed. It said that along with Gulf Arab representatives who sponsored the agreement, European and American envoys would also attend the signing.

Slideshow: Yemen in the spotlight (on this page)

Saleh has clung to power despite an 8-month-old uprising, mass protests calling for his ouster and a June assassination attempt that left him badly wounded and forced him to travel to Saudi Arabia for more than three months of hospital treatment.

'All parties agreed'
But things appeared to be shifting on Tuesday, when the U.N. secretary-general's envoy to Yemen, Jamal bin Omar, said all parties had agreed on a plan that would have Saleh step down.

"All parties agreed today on the Gulf initiative and the implementation of its mechanism," bin Omar said after meetings with Yemen's vice president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, in Sanaa.

Security in Yemen has unraveled amid the uprising against Saleh's 30-year reign.

The situation is particularly bad in the south, where al-Qaida militants ? from what is perhaps the world's most active branch of the terror network ? have taken control of entire towns, using the turmoil to strengthen their position.

Timeline: Yemen in turmoil (on this page)

The unarmed protesters have held their ground with remarkable resilience, flocking to the streets of Sanaa and other Yemeni cities and towns to demand reforms from the autocratic government and braving a violent crackdown by government forces that has killed hundreds.

But their uprising, inspired by other Arab revolts in the region that saw longtime rulers of Egypt and Tunisa go, has at times been hijacked by Yemen's two traditional powers ? the tribes and the military ? further deepening the country's turmoil.

Breakaway military units and tribal fighters have been battling in Sanaa with troops loyal to Saleh, in fighting that has escalated in recent months.

An impoverished nation of some 25 million people, Yemen is of strategic value to the United States and its Gulf Arab allies, particularly Saudi Arabia.

It sits close to the major Gulf oilfields and overlooks key shipping lanes in the Red and Arabian seas.

Women Fake Orgasm to Hang Onto Their Men (LiveScience.com)

Women who are unsure of their partner's fidelity are the most likely to fake orgasms, as well as engage in other behaviors designed to hang on to their man, a new study finds.

The research is the first to quantitatively link suspicions of infidelity to the likelihood of faking orgasm, said study researcher Farnaz Kaighobadi, a postdoctoral researcher at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at Columbia University.

But suspicion of infidelity isn't the only reason women might pretend they're having an orgasm, Kaighobadi said.

"A lot of the time, women are using it just as a tool to strengthen their relationship," she told LiveScience. "Sometimes women could be pretending orgasm just to show love and care to their partner."

The study was based on surveys of women, most of them in college and all of them heterosexual.

Cheating hearts and faked orgasms

Research on the female orgasm is relatively rare, Kaighobadi said. Previous studies used open-ended questions about women's sexual behavior, she said, and about half of the respondents said they had faked orgasm at some point in their lives. (By comparison, about 25 percent of men reported faking an orgasm.)

"One particular reason that emerges from a lot of studies is 'to keep my partner interested in this relationship,' or 'to prevent him from defecting [from] the relationship or leaving the relationship for another woman,'" Kaighobadi said.

To see if those anecdotes had a widespread basis, Kaighobadi distributed surveys to 453 women, ranging in age from 18 to 46, who had been in relationships for at least six months. Most of the women were Florida college students in their early 20s.

The surveys collected information about the women's demographics, their relationship dynamics and their sexual behaviors, including whether they had ever faked an orgasm during their current relationship. The women also were asked whether their partners had ever cheated, and how likely their partners were to do so in the future.

Adaptive orgasms

About 54 percent of the women in the study reported they had faked an orgasm at some point in their relationship. This group also was found to harbor more suspicions about their partners' fidelity than were the women who said they hadn't faked any orgasms.

Kaighobadi said these women also were more likely to engage in what psychologists call "mate-guarding" behaviors. Such behaviors can range from simply dressing up nicely for one's partner to keeping tabs of where he goes and telling off other women who look at him.

"It seems that women who were more likely to pretend orgasm were also more likely to do a variety of these behaviors at the same time," Kaighobadi said.

The researchers didn't ask how satisfied the women were with their sexual relationships, Kaighobadi said, so it was unknown whether faking orgasm is related to lower levels of satisfaction in bed. [Why Women Shrug Off Lousy Sex]

The research, published in the November issue of the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, could help inform an academic debate about whether the female orgasm is adaptive, meaning it somehow gives women an evolutionary advantage, Kaighobadi said. Researchers have argued over whether orgasms help a woman retain sperm from valued partners, and whether having orgasms keeps a male partner interested ? ?both of which would be considered adaptive functions.

"Only one or two studies provide evidence of whether there is an adaptive function or not," Kaighobadi said. "We're not sure, and I think there should be a lot more study."

Black Friday Blacklist

These steep discounts might have been a good offer a few months ago, given that Apple isn?t going to offer any major price breaks on the iPad (it starts at $499). But both Amazon and Barnes and Noble are now selling cheap tablets of their own, and their devices are more attractive than the also-runs you?ll find at Black Friday. It?s true that I didn?t love Amazon?s $199 Kindle Fire, but if you?ve absolutely got to have a cheap tablet this year, there?s no better one on the market. That?s because the Fire isn?t going to be discontinued tomorrow?Amazon will keep offering lots and lots of content for the device, and it will likely offer software upgrades that will fix some of the problems I had with it. This is true of the Nook Tablet, too, although at $250 plus tax, it?s not nearly as good of a deal as the Fire.

Finding Legal Aids in New York | Free New York Blog

One of the growing trends throughout the country is providing free legal aid to persons who cannot afford adequate legal representation. When it comes to legal aids in New York, there are a number of different ways to locate attorneys who have chosen to provide legal assistance to persons who require the services of a lawyer, but whose current circumstances prevent them from being able to hire legal counsel.

One of the easiest places to look is in the yellow pages for your local telephone service provider. A number of attorneys will include in their information their affiliation with a legal aid program. By scanning through the section for attorneys and also looking under the heading of ?legal aid services? it is a safe bet that you will find several attorneys in the New York metro area that may be able to help.

A visit to the local courthouse may also yield some results. A number of the court houses in the New York metro area maintain listing of attorneys that are available to take on cases where the defendant does not have assets to use for payment. Many of these will also be affiliated with one free legal program or another. These legal aids in New York listings are free for the asking, so you may be able to find an attorney off this sort of list that would be right for you.

Checking with friends may also be a good way to find several legal aids in New York. Perhaps a loved one has needed legal counsel in the past and was unable to afford it. In this scenario, your friend might be able to introduce you to the attorney that he or she was able to work with. At the same time, your friend may still have documents with lists of free legal aid attorneys in the area.

If all else fails, check out the Internet. When it comes to legal aid in the city and state of New York, you will find a number of sites that discuss the structure of the programs, who sponsors them, how to qualify for free legal aid and where to make your application. In some cases, you can begin the process online.

Keep in mind that you will not receive legal aids in New York just on your say-so. You will have to prove that you are unable to pay for attorney services and then submit an application. Once you are accepted, then you will be able to meet with an attorney and begin the process of dealing with whatever legal issue you have on your plate.

New York City Announces Expansion Of Legal Services For ...

Mayor Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, announced on Monday an expansion of legal services for immigrants in New York City.

According to a statement released by the mayor's website, Bloomberg will implement a staff of eleven new full-time immigration attorneys whose role it will be to "ensure that immigrants... have access to the counsel they need and do not suffer unnecessary immigration consequences as they navigate the legal system" in the courts and at the City's Family Justice Centers. The program is set to launch by the beginning of 2012.

The mayor justifies the expansion of such services on the premises that immigrants are often unaware of the complexities of the immigration system and what's in their best interests. Immigrants facing charges for minor offenses, for example, are "often unaware of the sometimes severe immigration consequences that can follow from certain dispositions", the mayor's website maintains.

The program will cost approximately 1.5 million dollars according to the mayor's office. While part of this will be covered by donations from the Robin Hood Foundation, the mayor's office did not respond immediately to an inquiry regarding how much of this total will be paid for by taxpayers.

Last June, The New York Times editorial page took aim at Bloomberg's administration for trimming Immigrant Opportunities Initiative, a program which provided English and legal services for immigrants. The program saw its budget "halved to $5 million in fiscal 2010, and then zeroed out in the mayor?s 2011 budget."

New York City's expansion of legal services for immigrants will come only a few months after Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York State would suspend participation in the federal Secure Communities Program pending a review of its ability to meet stated goals and potential negative consequences for witnesses.

In the past year, Bloomberg has put pressure on Washington to expand the visa program to allow more foreign entrepreneurs to work in the United States. He has also expressed avid support for establishing a "reliable way for employers to hire guest workers" in an Op-Ed for the Wall Street Journal in May.

Fatima Shama, Commissioner of the mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, said in the statement released by the mayor's website that, "access to justice is a cornerstone of our democracy and New York City continues to ensure access and protection for immigrant New Yorkers."

Armed man barricaded at Colorado Air Force base (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? An airman facing possible discharge barricaded himself in a building on a Colorado air force base with a gun on Monday, prompting the facility to activate "special control measures," base officials said.

The airman barricaded himself in a deployment processing building at Schriever Air Force Base at about 10 a.m. local time, and was still there about 2 hours later as negotiators spoke with him, base spokeswoman Lieutenant Marie Denson said.

"Currently they are speaking with him, our first responders, our security personnel as well as our security partners," Denson said.

Denson said the airman, whose name was not immediately released, had been facing legal action in civilian court and a possible discharge. She had no further details on that legal action.

Schriever Air Force Base spokeswoman Staff Sergeant Patrice Clarke said the airman was armed but had not fired his weapon.

"He has a personal handgun. There have not been any shots fired," Clarke said.

First responders have secured the base, south of Denver, and have evacuated the building, according to the base.

A spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff's office, Sergeant Mike Schaller, said the office had sent a negotiator to the scene.

"The security of Schriever personnel and their families is paramount. We are taking every precaution to ensure their safety," Colonel James P. Ross, 50th Space Wing commander, said in a statement.

The Day After Raw: Your Tweets for Nov. 22, 2011

The WWE Universe was perhaps more vocal than it?s ever been inside the revered arena known as The Mecca of Sports-Entertainment, Madison Square Garden, on Sunday night. Twenty-four hours later, the theme continued in Hershey, Pa., and on Twitter in response to a ?watershed? moment for Cody Rhodes, the unexpected collapse of The ?Awesome Truth? and a mystifying video montage featuring the long absent mask of Kane.

It?s the day after Raw. Let?s see what you thought ?

The mystery of Kane?s mask
No longtime WWE fan will ever forget the mask that once concealed the ghastly face of The Big Red Monster for the first half of his WWE career. This is exactly why when the symbolic shroud appeared in a chilling video on Raw SuperShow, the WWE Universe exploded in speculation about the possible return of the hellfire and brimstone-born Superstar, beneath the mask not seen since 2003.

But wait just a moment. While the images in the footage were clearly of Kane?s former face gear and though the hulking fiend seemed to resemble The Big Red Monster, it?s still unclear what it all actually means. Is it Kane or could it be another twisted force, perhaps even The Undertaker? The theories have already begun to form on Twitter.

@RyderUprising: #raw kane is coming! Masked?

@aBeeBitMyBottom: looks like #Kane is on his way back! #WWE #Raw

@FanKentonVP: Just re-watched that Kane Promo.FREAKY AS HECK.I hope this means he comes back psychotic or with a new mask. @WWE #RAW

Cody Rhodes splashes Booker TTell me Rhodes did NOT just do that!
Somebody should?ve told the Intercontinental Champion that the blaze of Harlem Heat went out years ago. Perhaps then, ?snarling? Cody Rhodes wouldn?t have disrespectfully doused Booker T with water at the announce table. The second-generation Superstar claimed to be ?unbeatable? then backed it up with a decisive win over Santino Marella on Raw SuperShow, but watered down his credibility with such an insulting act to a retired ring legend like Booker T, a five-time (five-time, five-time, etc.) WCW Champion plus World Heavyweight Champion in WWE. (WATCH)

Was it Booker?s supposed ?biased reporting? as cited by Michael Cole? Probably not. Rhodes made a splash, but certainly cost himself placement in Book?s ?Fave Five? for the foreseeable future, if not worse.

@SpenceSupreme: Cody Rhodes threw water in Booker T's face! Aw hell naw! Hell naw! #TellMeHeDidNotJustDoThat #WWE #RAW

@RamonVillalobos: SOMEONE GET COLE A TOWEL! A man of his integrity shouldn't be wet by Booker T's water! #Raw #Colemining

@CashDeVereaux: I'm glad cody rhodes threw that water in booker t's face. Booker T needs to chill. I'm not feeling him as a commentator. #wwe #raw

CM Punk drops "Office Space" reference on LaurinaitisCM Punk references ?Office Space?
As one of 31 WWE Twitter trends, ?The Best in the World? CM Punk was warmly received just 24 hours after capturing the WWE Championship at Survivor Series ? mostly because of what Punk promised now that he?s back on top, partly due to his likening of Interim Raw GM and EVP John Laurinaitis to cult icon Bill Lumbergh from ?Office Space? (without any of the comedy).

The new WWE Champion wanted more than to know where the hell the WWE ice cream bars are; he advocated for the removal of Laurinaitis. (WATCH) WWE fans seemed to agree that the general manager?s matchmaking is the equivalent of Lumbergh?s TPS reports and weekend overtime, but most cannot wait for The Straight Edge Superstar to fulfill his guarantee to be an ?agent of change.?

And, yes, Punk said ?stooge.? Don?t touch his stapler.

@RKOsnumber1Fan: ****CM Punk, I really hope the Ice Cream Bars come back!! #Raw ***

@93WMA: Agent of Change = CM Punk #raw

@JohnLaryngitis: Punk will have to write an apology on WWE.com for calling him a stooge. #Raw

@JoeyStyles: Hey @@CMPunk, don't you know you can't call @WWERawGM a "stooge"? http://www.wwe.com/inside/laurinaitis-apology

@austin1212: Punk raises a good question. Where the hell are those WWE Ice Cream Bars? #Raw

@PrototypeIV: Johnny Ace has a wildside and is an agent of change. #Raw

@EMcG3624: Yes @WWE where ARE the Ice Cream Bars? #Raw

Timing is awkward for Robert Wagner "NCIS" episode (omg!)

By Chris Willman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Robert Wagner will have dueling appearances on CBS this week: As a handcuffed character on "NCIS" on Tuesday and as the subject of a "48 Hours" segment that aired on Saturday night exploring Natalie Wood's death almost 30 years ago.

The network put together what now seems like a rather jolting promo spot for Tuesday night's episode of "NCIS," which show Wagner's character being handcuffed and brought in for questioning on suspicion of murder.

His guest-starring role on TV's top crime drama is not, of course, to be confused with his appearance on the same network's "48 Hours Mystery," which looked into whether his wife's death, deemed an accidental drowning in 1981, warrants a criminal investigation.

Is this the kind of situation for which the word "awkward" was invented?

"The episode is running as scheduled," CBS spokesperson Chris Ender said Saturday, asked by The Wrap if any thought had been given to postponing the Wagner-centered "NCIS" or re-editing the commercial spots.

Saturday's episode of "48 Hours," meanwhile, reflected a change in schedule. The segment about Wood's death originally was slated to air during Thanksgiving weekend, which would have allowed for Wagner's "NCIS" guest spot and promotion to be over and done with before CBS' news division raised any provocative questions.

But the news show was bumped up a week after the L.A. County Sheriff's office held a news conference on Friday announcing their reopening of the Wood case -- an announcement that, in turn, was likely spurred by the imminence of the "48 Hours" segment.

"Timing is everything," Susan Zirinsky, the executive producer of "48 Hours" told TheWrap on Saturday afternoon during a quick break in the editing room as her team rushed the Wood segment toward completion.

Zirinsky acknowledged the irony of Wagner's being a featured actor on the network within days of her news program's airing interviews that revive insinuations about his actions before and after his wife's death in 1981. But she said that never figured in the initial decision to run the segment after "NCIS" aired, nor did her team worry when it became clear that they would move their "48 Hours" episode closer to Wagner's appearance on "NCIS."

"That's what's great about CBS: There is a division of church and state," said Zirinsky. "We in the news division would never be asked to hold a show because of something in the entertainment world. There was never a discussion about 'Should we not air this "48 Hours" this week?'"

Another source close to "NCIS" said that they fielded questions about whether the commercials should be recut, but with Wagner's character being so central to the show, those thoughts weren't seriously entertained -- "and anyway, the sheriff's office said he isn't a suspect" in the Wood case.

Still, much of the speculation around Wood's death continues to pivot on Wagner's actions that night, before her disappearance and after everyone on board the boat was aware that she was missing.

The "48 Hours" segment includes an interview with an EMT who believes Wood survived adrift in the ocean for hours and might have been saved if a search had been called earlier. Also interviewed is the captain of the boat, who says he lied to authorities during the initial police investigation and has co-authored a book largely dedicated to putting the blame for Wood's death on his former friend Wagner.

Meanwhile, "NCIS" and Wagner have been very good to each other in recent years, as he's become the most popular recurring guest star on TV's most popular scripted show.

The former "Hart to Hart" star made his first appearance two seasons ago as Anthony DiNozzo Sr., the lovable-scoundrel dad of Michael Weatherly's character. That episode proved to be one of the most acclaimed in the show's nine-season run, so Wagner has been brought back for annual appearances, last season and again now.

TV watchers may also recall that Weatherly played Wagner in the 2004 TV movie "The Mystery of Natalie Wood," directed by Peter Bogdanovich and co-produced by Lana Wood, Natalie's sister. The "NCIS" actor has said in the past that the telepic was a touchy subject he and Wagner avoided discussing after they began working together.

Knowing what they know now about the news flurry of recent days, CBS might have avoided promoting Wagner's "NCIS" appearance with plot synopses like: "When DiNozzo's dad ... is found in a car, minus his memory but plus one dead body, the NCIS team must determine whether the man is capable of murder."

By the end of Tuesday's "NCIS," Wagner's much-loved character will have been found blameless. Only a public opinion poll will reveal whether viewers walked away from "48 Hours" with the same sense of relief.

UC Davis cop pepper sprays famous works of art

Unknown

Lt. John Pike makes an unexpected appearance in Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."

By Athima Chansanchai

It's not enough that the police are pepper spraying Occupy protesters,?now they're taking aim at famous works of art?? as an Internet meme, of course.

It was only a matter of time before the viral image of that UC Davis cop (Lt. John Pike, you're famous now! Or infamous?) made it into certain images, but it's a stroke of genius to incorporate it into famous works of art, as you can see below (and which we saw all over Facebook last night, too).

James Alex, an American artist living in Edinburgh, Scotland, created some of the images Sunday night?after seeing the Seurat mash-up (above), and expanded?it to others such as the Manet, the Eakins, Wyeth and Willard, posting them to his Tumblr.

"I started to think about the UC students using a peaceful method of?protest, i.e. sitting, and how truly revolutionary such a passive event?like sitting could be. Then I started to think about paintings being?passive yet revolutionary especially in their own time and yes, now too," he wrote in an email to msnbc.com this morning. "Popping in the image of the officer resulted in something quite dynamic?with a multitude of meanings, the least of which is playing with the idea?of historical events and how unamerican a violent act can be."

Here, Alex chose Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" to express his thoughts. Another creative soul chose Picasso's "Guernica" to reveal the police presence now seen around the world.

Lt. John Pike makes a stealthy cameo in Picasso's "Guernica."

Others have done the random photoshop, and still more have merged memes (see the Leo diCaprio strut below, too).

Leo diCaprio strut meme merges with pepper spray image

There's much more on Know Your Meme's "Casually Pepper Spray Everything Cop" page.

UC Chancellor?Linda P.B. Katehi?has come under fire for her handling of the situation, putting the offending officers caught on camera on administrative leave. While these images conjure up the lighter side of the police action, we realize how serious the situation really is. If you haven't seen the original image yet, here it is, followed by a video about the ensuing controversy.

NBC News

Students at UC Davis are pepper sprayed.

As faculty members call for her resignation, the chancellor of UC Davis launched an investigation into the pepper-spraying of apparently peaceful Occupy Davis protesters by campus police. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
